I'm in my early 40's, didn't really start drinking till mid 20's than hit it hard till late 30's. Then had kids and slowed down. Now I only drink on the weekends and have gone without several times.
I'm at a place where I've been watching a lot of videos like this and appreciate the message. This guy makes a lot of sense, however I keep getting hung up on the part where everyone says "there is nothing good about drinking"
I get it from a health perspective. But i feel like the elephant in the room is that for the short time you are drinking it feels fantastic. And when all you do is work and take care of your family, it's really nice to have that little reward of feeling great for an evening or 2, that's not nothing.
I have abstained from drinking a bunch of different times from a couple weeks to a couple years one time. The only thing that changed was the feeling of being left out, or "not allowed" to drink. Especially at social events, it just made it kind of boring.
I don't know maybe there just isn't a one size fits all approach?

I know what you mean. I’m 59 and I’ve been drinking since my teens. For many years, I drank most every day, now I’ll usually take a couple of days off between drinking and rarely drink more than two days in a row. I’ve always drank because I’ve enjoyed it, not to hide from some problem. I’ve never been the type that can’t stop drinking, in fact, I have a hard time drinking past a certain point, though the experts would say that point is an unhealthy level of consumption.
Lately, I’ve had some strange issues that I wonder if they could be related to alcohol: a recurring rash that seems like poison oak (i’ve been getting it for years and always thought was some irritant. I’ve come in contact from Mountain biking in the woods), and dry lips. So I’ve been wondering, what kind of damage I may be doing to myself, but at the same time all the info out on the Internet is so dramatically dire and seemingly biased.
I’ve always stated my philosophy is “drink till I die but not die from drinking“. It’s been 7 days since my last drink and I haven’t missed it, other than missing the enjoyment of getting nice and relaxed, shutting down my brain, and watching goofy shows in my lazy boy.
I don’t feel like I’m in a “quit drinking or else“ category here, but it seems lately all the “experts “ make drinking alcohol sound like we may as well be drinking nuclear waste.

If I tried moderate drinking, after the third drink, moderate would be out the door! I drank for the buzz!, This Sat. the 11th of March will be 4 months without the booze!

We have been told to do everything in moderation but fact is for a person who usually ends up binge drinking moderation is not a reasonable goal. You either completely quit it or relapses will happen.

Everything in moderation is not a great idea anyway, not if you think about it... falling off a cliff in moderation. How about holding your head under water? Drinking bleach in moderation? We've conditioned our brains to accept alcohol or cigars, for instance, in moderation. When viewed purely rationally, these things are quite stupid even in small amounts

What if its that you dont like the buz but you get bored without a beer to "acomplish"

Yeah it's never worked long term for me. Had a few successful nights out but it was so boring. I realise now I drink for the buzz, and I love the buzz so much I'm itching to continue boozing all night, its irresistible.

Okay. What if I do not drink to get drunk or to get a buzz? I exercise the discipline and willpower to drink only 1 shot of single malt Scotch whiskey daily for its scientifically proven health benefits? Would you agree that this is the best "healthy moderation"?

Glad to have watched this video as I have dilly dallied over the years on this subject of becoming a "moderate drinker" when I never have been one. It may start off that way but before you know it, it becomes the full blown disease it always was. I have had years of sobriety and then a relapse thinking I knew more and I was wiser now and this time I would be able to control my drinking! Well that was the fantasy! The reality is it always gets worse and more progressive with age. I am going to be three years sober this time and probably wise enough to understand that there is no moderation when it come to my type! Thanks for being candid. 👍

Had the thoughts creeping in again of moderation and i'll be seven years sober in two months. Its s hard one to talk about though, its not a popular topic in AA and people outside of AA kind of think its possible. I generally find I can dismiss these people ( in a nice way) at the time but then in other moments I almost find myself agreeing with them. And round and round we go. I wont give in though. I actually had a good time in rehab but I never want to go back and I agree with the essence of this video in that I never drunk moderately, not really. I am a greedy drinker and if I try to go moderate I'm going into battle with a demon that brought me regular terror, trauma, violence, hurt, loneliness, pity, desperation, delusion and out of control egoism. The demon is wilier than I am and takes away the person I am supposed to be. 'Alc' (from the greek meaning balance ie 'Alcemy') and 'ghoul' aka spirits can access sn alcoholics energy field easier.

I guess my question would be what is the point of moderate drinking for those that drink to get inebriated? How torturous would that be?

No true alcoholic really wants to drink in moderation. What we want, is to be able to get drunk and not get into any kind of trouble because of it. Gosh, it would be so great to be able to get that "fun" buzz and never have to pay for it. It always amuses me to hear an alcoholic say that they wish they could stop after a couple of drinks!!! Bull! That wouldn't come close to where we really want to go. I'm an old lady who pushed it to the point of near death but finally managed to stop just before I turned forty. Been sober for 35 years now. Moderation? NO WAY!! We are alcoholics. Our brain's reward center will sabotage us every time that we think we might be able to gain control. My heart hurts for anyone in the grips of addiction.

I've tried very "scientific" approach to planned drinking on several occcassions in the past. This video is excellent, Kevin. It explains exactly why this approach will never work. And from that science perspective, the fact is that even so-called moderate drinking doubles your risk for some kinds of cancer. All these ideas we hear everywhere about moderate drinking being a healthy thing to do is (IMHO) just propaganda for profit.

added to favorites... this is one of the best reasons for not drinking. its because the alcohol ultimately has no effect. so what is the point then?
