So glad you've gone back first. This album was great and contains four of my fave tracks of Bowie - Unwashed, Letter To Hermione, Cygnet Committee & Memory Of A Free Festival. Another great reaction.
Another familiar name from the Unwashed track is rhythm guitarist Tim Renwick, who played with Pink Floyd for the Pulse and Delicate Sound of Thunder tours. He even soloed on a couple of the songs. It’s a small world in the music industry.
Cheers, Lee. I’d never seen the live clip and it really gave me chills. Unwashed is one of my all time favourite Bowie tracks, from the quiet acoustic beginning to the monster jam ending. What a trip! Once again you’ve got me re-living my youth with a big fat grin on my face.
Thanks for starting at the start, Lee. The album was originally just called David Bowie but was re-released as Space Oddity (after his first hit single) when his later big chart breakthrough occurred. Mick Wayne, Tim Renwick, John Lodge and John Cambridge were the band Junior's Eyes (also produced by Tony Visconti).
Ooooh, we're going ALL the way back, I see! Some great tracks on this album. When you're listening to it, take a moment to appreciate that the follow-up album was The Man Who Sold The World. Mindblowing to think he went from one to the other, and that both are masterpieces. Oh, and thanks for the Space Oddity clip. Haven't seen that before - great archive footage!
This was the first Bowie album I bought. In early 1970 hearing the news that the Beatles had broken up, wasn't sure if rock n roll would carry on. Then I heard Space Oddity, and then everything was alright again.
Saw Bowie at Day on the Green during the Serious Moonlight tour. Played Oddity and my favorite song of his, Ashes to Ashes, among others. The Tubes opened the show.
Delighted that you are stepping back to listen to this wonderful album Lee. Actually, I played it in the car this morning when I went shopping. I have seen this live performance of Space Oddity before, it is wonderful to see Bowie live from this era. I remember contemplating the visuals of a "phallus in pigtails" as a teenager when I first heard 'Unwashed.....'. because of my age perhaps (?) I place this album in my top four favourite Bowie albums. Do keep going! Another great reaction.
Glad you enjoyed, "Unwashed...", has a great outro jam indeed. The live video is so cool, hippy David !. Btw, when I was 10 yrs old in 1973, yes, I'm that age, I also pronounced Hermione the same way as you and your father. Enjoyed the reaction, Lee, look forward to the rest of this great album.
I love Unwashed and Slightly Dazed + Cygnet Commitee, these are the top 2 closely followed by The Wildeyed Boy from Freecloud. I bought this album in the begiining of the 70's sometime, I hated it (I thought it was hippy shit) and took it back and exchanged it for something else. Sometime later I bought Hunky Dory (loved it), then The Man Who Sold the World (loved it). At this point I went back to buy Space Oddity ........... and loved it this time, Bowie had really grown on me. After that I bought his earlier (somewhat strange at times) stuff (Uncle Arthur and The Little Bombardier stuff like that)..................... Now a lifetime later he's still a superb artist and much missed
As a 12 yr's old I sang The ''Space Oddity'' Song in front of my class for our Tuesday music class ..witch came over a radio ..in 1982 in our class room, Each week a diff student had to stand on our teachers desk and sing whatever song we wanted, I sang this on my turn. Teacher loved it!
The Space Oddity performance is apparently from the 1969 Ivor Novello Awards (Ivors). They hand him the 'special award for originality' though it's listed as winning in 1970. As per the Wiki article they break down awards into around a dozen categories.
Love the way you appreciate music, and here you say there are touches of Hendrix - I've always felt that but never vocalised it - beautiful - thank you!
Thank you for the kind words, they are much appreciated. There are certainly some Hendrix splashes in the second track. I’m guessing this was the time when he was at his hottest (while he was still with us) I bet everyone wanted a more Hendrix like sound. It was unheard of at the time! He was a force of nature just like David. Innovators, not impressionists
A fine choice of direction. Not going all the way back is also wise. But there's a happy workaround. The songs David liked *around* that first album -- singles he recorded before and after, and one or two tracks from the album -- he remade in 2000 with his current band. That album, Toy, was finally released posthumously in 2021. So some day you can get to the early songs in that setting. It's a cool album.
🌸 morning, dude 🤍 I miss Bowie so much... he was one of the few that lived his life the way he wanted and didn't care what anyone else thought. and to me, that's pretty powerful.
When Space Oddity was reissued after Bowie became a global star in 1972, RCA omitted 'Don't Sit Down' from the reissue. It is in truth just a bit of live messing about in the studio.
@@L33Reacts You're right! You can Google the story about the Ivor Novello Award - which Bowie *did* win in 1970 for most original song. I was thinking about the 1969 Malta International Song Festival, in which David came in second to the long-forgotten Italian entrant, Cristina.
Oddity indeed. Nice backing tracks. Purpose made? This must've been concurrent with the initial release, when it didn't take off. It only reappeared and hit a year or two later. UASSL? Know that feeling. 😊 Must sees? 'Boys Keep Swingin', SNL; 'Look Back In Anger'; 'Loving the Alien'.
great reaction as always and thank you for requesting that Lee LOL I cannot wait for letter to Hermione and Cygnet committee I think is it's so hard for me to say what my number one David Bowie song is because there's so many but I will tell you that Cygnet committee is in the top five it's killer I can't wait till next Wednesday Rock Onl!!

Thank you, my brother. I figured we might as well before we hop into the “future” (relative to this)
Can’t wait for Cygnet Committee!
Excellent. We have all been "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" in the past. Though never so musically.
The live video of Bowie so young was a real treat.
Especially the shirt ^^
❤Yes, and the hair! 😮👍
I’m glad y’all enjoyed ;)
Can't wait for your reaction to Cygnet Committee....in my top 3 fave Bowie tracks of all time!
I keep hearing that!! I can’t wait for next week then 😁😁😁

I’m glad I could help, fellow Lee. I try my best to bring y’all back. It’s more fun back then, anyway… lol 😆 in some ways. Other ways, not so much 😂
Wakeman played the mellotron on this. He was nearly late for the session then nailed his part in one take.
The Spirit of Syd Barret IS on this album.......Psychedelic Folk Bowie. I love this album......Space Oddity, Heroes, Low, Ziggy are my 4 favorites
I see several asking for Cygnet committee.... Here to help their plea hopefully! We love your reactions!
Thank you so much, Bridget! That one will be next week.
Can’t wait!!😎
@@L33Reacts oh how wonderful! Thank you!

Amazing how he recreated himself over the years. Love every step of the way❤️ 🌹
Unwashed is such a fantastic jam. That bass guitar line and texture along with the drumming just slays me.

Oh, and thanks for the Space Oddity clip. Haven't seen that before - great archive footage!
My father in law didn't care much for most modern music, but he absolutely loved this one
This was the first Bowie album I bought. In early 1970 hearing the news that the Beatles had broken up, wasn't sure if rock n roll would carry on. Then I heard Space Oddity, and then everything was alright again.
Great story.
This is Bowie's first televised performance
No shit really?? I didn’t know that lol that’s amazing
@@L33Reacts Yeah the Space Oddity performance was the first time on tv.
I can't believe I haven't heard unwashed in probably 40 years. You know he was your idol when you still know all the words!! 6:29
Saw Bowie at Day on the Green during the Serious Moonlight tour. Played Oddity and my favorite song of his, Ashes to Ashes, among others. The Tubes opened the show.
Great to see live Space Oddity. Ty!
The “Unwashed” track is new to me, and freaking amazing
Right??? That track was incredible lol David always brings it
Check out the one on Live at the Beeb. Actually check out the Live at the Beeb comp.
The older I get, the more I appreciate Bowie. Love these picks, and not because I'm somewhat slightly dazed, well maybe. Blessings all.
It's an honour to join you on your Bowie journey of discovery! Hermione and Cygnet Committee are great, looking forward to seeing what you think!

That live video showed a side of David Bowie I hadn't seen before. It was great to see the "real" Bowie and not one of his characters! ☮❤🎶
I’m glad you enjoyed. I thought it was great just seeing him up there singing and strumming. No personalities or characters… just him. Loved it.

Awesome Lee, thank you, you won't regret reacting to this album! There's great stuff on here!
Okay, then, "Don't Sit Down, Letter To Hermione" and "The Cygnet Committee" should be next! I think he will love the last track!
Yup those are the next three! Can’t wait to hear cygnet. Lots of folks are saying it’s dope. I trust yall and you can never go wrong with Bowie lol

the "Cygnet comittee" is interesting
It's a great song.
Thanks. I had not seen this version. The one we know is from 1972. It's fun to see Bowie live before the spiders from mars!

Thank you for the info, asym. I couldn’t find much about it other then it hadn’t really circulated much
Yes would win the Novello prize in 1972 for Roundabout.
@@L33Reacts Np thanks for uploading it. Forgot to mention this was his first live televised performance.

Cygnet.. a special place in my heart ... Bewlay Brothers too

Wise words in the after-comments, Lee. And that's funny about your dad's pronunciation of Hermione's name. ❤

Another great album. You really can't go wrong with Bowies first 12 or so years. He produced a lot of great albums one after another.
I read the lyrics to the 2nd track; They make I am the Walrus look like Shakespear
William Shatner's version of Spacy Oddity is too unique to miss. Really!!
I am always excited for your Bowie Wednesdays!
Very cool version

Ooo, I've never heard/seen that version of "Space Oddity" before! Is it from the Malta Song Festival, where he won with the song?
According to another comment it was the Ivor’s? He was nominated but did not win if I’m remembering correctly lol

He would have been 22 here.
Incredible. They don’t make em like they used to lol
I waa 8 years old in 1969 ,yet it doesn't really feel like that long ago.
Now 63 lol
Just want to say that the "Mix" version "Unwashed and.." is abit different from the original. The original is more harmonica heavy.
I don't really like the background, but I do like David's singing. He was 22 here.
