  • We saw Whales in Alaska! | U.S.A. | Sixty and Travelling
When we were on our way back after travelling to the majestic Holgate glacier in Pacific Ocean near Gulf of Alaska, we luckily got what may be once in a lifetime opportunity! We got to watch whales in action, not one or two but a whole lot more. And at that time whales were engaged in bubble-net feeding.
Bubble-net feeding is a rare sight and we got to see it from really close quarters. A typical humpback whale can weigh as much as 36000 kg., it could be 18 metres long and live for 80 to 90 years. In a day, this whale can consume upto 1500 kg of food, essentially fish and krill.
For catching it's food, humpback whales use bubble-net feeding technique for creating bubbles in ocean water which forms a kind of net around small fish and krill. And when whales surface for breathing with their mouth vide open, they swallow thousands of litres of water and along with it several hundreds of kilograms of fish.
This unique group activity happens usually for a short time in summer in Kenai Peninsula near Resurrection Bay. It was really lucky for us that we could watch this wonder of nature from rather close quarters, not once but several times during our journey back from Holgate glacier. In this connection please also see our previous video on Kenai Fjords National Park.
    Thanks for your attention
