Vocal nodules, and she worked herself until her voice just couldn't take it anymore, if you want to do crazy vocal gymnastics then you have to be able to back it up with good rest, but she hardly slept, singers usually have an insane thirst to become successful when they first start out, which means that they will usually work as hard as possible, hardly sleeping, trying to make it big everyday and night (which is incredibly damaging), this normally fades once the singer gains said success, but Mariah never lost her drive for success, she still gave her all in every performance as if she was still trying to be noticed by a big music exec, her passion for music never wavered at all
