    Very good, no long boring intro, straight to useful information thank you, my second year planting garlic here in Ireland, due to lock downs and the garden centre being closed, I couldn't get proper seed bulbs so planted store bought. I planted 3 different types, one has split as you warned of, and the other two are not ready yet. Did not know about the leaves turning brown or to remove the Bulbils, thanks for the tips.
    Will jar and ferment the split bulbs.

    Great video. I too have been harvesting garlic for abt 5 years. I planted 240 last fall and just harvested them yesterday. Most of the bulbs were tennis ball size. Was very pleased as the prior yr most of my garlic was extremely small. Thanks again.

    Folks, you can follow this excellent talk to the tee, she hit all the major points of garlic growing. I too have been growing from the same stock for about 6 years in NW Pennsylvania. We usually plant the last week of October, mulch from frost, then pull the mulch back in the spring. Next year, (this fall) I'll be planting bulbils separate from the main patch to start a generation of fresh stock. Great video!!

    It is amazing how many galic growers have a totally different way of drying and storing. Last one I watched insisted bulbs up and green down. I harvest an acre of garlic, doing what she did I would be there all year.

    I live in central CT and I plant at about the same time. Don't forget to mention what type of garlic has to be planted in this very cold north east. Use HARDNECK garlic. You can find these varieties at FedCo. SOFTNECK garlic is much better for southern regions below the Mason/Dixon line. Do not let them get wet as they dry outside and do as she said and keep them in the shade so that they get air. Rotate the planting place from year to year and that will also help the disease problem. Next year I will do bulbis from one of each of my varieties just to see how planting them out works.

    I planted some garlic as an experiment. I had some that were sprouting. So I planted them. They got green tops then died back. Next year they came up again. Each piece I planted became many tops. I took that separated them and replanted. They did nothing but die back. Next year up they came again. Again I separated and replanted. Again they died back. Next season I repeated and some grew into small bulbs that put up scrapes. The rest died back. About to tear out my hair I started trying to learn what was going on. Last years crop smelled Devine when ever I walked past. Now I have small bulbs. I might replant them in the fall as u suggest, see what I get...

    I've always cut the scapes but this year I accidentally missed one so I decided to leave it on. It was the music variety and I just harvested it expecting that one to have a smaller bulb than the rest but surprisingly it was the same size if not slightly larger than the others. It was about a month after harvesting the scapes that I harvested the garlic.

    OK. So this is the first year that I have grown garlic. My harvest was wonderful! Now I have a little problem. I hung them up in my garage, and I should have cut the tops off. Now there is a brown mushy stuff in the center of the bulb. It only affect the paper covering on the cloves. When you peel them, the cloves are still nice and white. My concern is, if I try to plant these in October, for next years garlic, will I get disease because of the rot on the cloves? Should I peel the garlic to get rid of pathogens? Peel, and dip in rubbing alcohol before planting or.............?

      Issac Newton To be on the safe side I would not use that garlic for seed. However, if it truly was a problem with proper drying you could try planting that garlic seed but it may be risky.

    How should you store garlic, store bought in a jar and peeled? I would presume this stuff is not ideal for growing.

    Thank you for this informative video. Do you ever have problems with mice or other critters getting to your hanging garlic and eating it? I am leery of hanging them in the barn, which would be a perfect spot, for this reason.

    • @electricgary1
      @electricgary1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have never had any issues. We have seen mice in the shed but never had any issues with mice or anything else eating the garlic.

    Incredible video! Thank you very much. I am now a sub. Question: How do you plant your garlic and also to protect it (the clove you planted) during the winter with the snow, do you mulch over the bed? I am in Wisconsin in zone 4b simular to you. Thanks in advance.

      last year i planted it in late october and covered the bed with shredded leaves about 12 '' it worked like a charm .just brush the leaves that did not rot away in april

    It’s weird how many people I know remove most leaves and the roots before hanging. It’s also seems most have no idea other than they’ve been told to do it that way.

  • @priayief

    Great advice but ... your scape experiment would have been more definitive if you had have removed the scapes from half your crop then compared the results. In my experience there are too many seasonal variables that affect my harvest. So, to minimize the variability anytime I try something new or different, I "reserve" half my harvest for the new way so I can easily compare the new with the old. Thanks for the effort in posting. Cheers.

    Do you have to rotate garlic?

    • @electricgary1
      @electricgary1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you rotate garlic. You shouldn't plant it in the same spot for three years.

    • @FishTickler59
      @FishTickler59 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you keep it in the same location, your garlic is more likely to get garlic diseases. 'It may develop rot and not grow as large because garlic sucks a lot of nutrients from the soil. So it's best to move your garlic bed to a virgin location that had potatoes or beets in it the previous year. Plant buckwheat or legumes about 3 months before you'd plant the garlic. till in that plant about 1 month before the garlic goes in. The rotting green manure will feed the garlic as it grows.

    I just wash them quickly and remove the dirty half broken top layer off right away. I dont see how that particular layer would be a benefit to leave on, its a dirt and moisture trap.
