For the non-nationals: the meaning of this song is not JUST about telling some Napoleatan bloke not to speak like an American. "Fare l'americano" means to spend a lot of money, to have a luxurious life-style, to pay for everyone etc... This song is kind of a reminder about not pretending to act like an american because if you are italian you definitely can't afford it. This song has been composed after the WWII and the "American dream" represented a great narrative among Italians.

I remember this song from when it first reached the US in the 1950's. I'm old. Of course, at the time half the singers in the US were Italianos or at least claimed to be, from Sinatra, F Avalon, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and on and on.
