    First through the barn doors are Emma Brookes and her mum Rosemary, with an incredible tale of wartime resistance. They have brought in Rosemary’s father’s homemade radio, which he used during the Nazi occupation of Jersey during the Second World War. In an attempt to control the flow of information, the Nazis confiscated all of the radios on the island, and anyone caught using one was in serious trouble. Undeterred, Rosemary’s father hid his contraption under the floorboards, removing it each day to listen to the BBC news. He would then post a news bulletin on the noticeboard at his club. It was his way of defying the Germans and doing his bit for the war effort. The radio is made from an old polish tin, curtain hooks and other bits and pieces he had to hand. Returning it to working order promises to be a tough assignment for electronics expert Mark Stuckey.

    I built a crystal radio with my brother when I was 12. He went off to war and I never got to see him again. I'm now 47 and I still have that simple little radio. I miss him so much.

    Being a Radio Amateur for 51 years, I can relate to this repair/project. built a few of those single stage recievers myself. spot on with the tube check, coil repair etc. well done and I'm sure the Mom would have been thrilled to have heard it once again but so glad her daughter and granddaugher were able to see and hear it. It’s so good that she was able to place her father in the history of the German occupation of that tiny part of these islands: many people in every occupied country collaborated, went along to get along, with an evil regime. To hear it from someone who was there, and who remembers it, and who gives their testament linked to the physical evidence of resistance, is important.

    Well, the Repair Shop manages to ruin another historical artifact. This radio in its original state should have been studied by a professional and then placed in a museum to be enjoyed by others with a context explanation. Now it will sit on a shelf in someone's home. It will sit on the shelf admired by few, in its reworked and inaccurate form.
    Before you take on another project like this, please consider the object's historical value over television ratings.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      It's not special. It's a war time crystal radio. There's thousands upon thousands out there and many have very similar back stories. There isn't much to study "he made a standard crystal radio" like literally that's all it is, it's the same as many many others. The value here is to the family and their attachment to it.
