A supportive melody
Lol vegeta gave a speech about all of the saiyans surpassing their limits but gohan didn't even surpass Mystic in the entire T.O.P. lol
Ultra Instinct Ben Pierce Gohans a nerd, fight me on the topic. They use him to build hype and he never ever does anything, Cell was his peak.
I'm a Vegeta fan, but you gotta give Gohan some breaks. Gohan is already WAAAAAY stronger than Goku in his age. Gohan currently is like late 20s right? when Goku was that old he was just learning how to master SSJ. Gohan can compete with Post God SSJ2 Goku and even making him go beyond.
He did get back on that level it's just everyone is so much stronger than that now
Hanson Juanlim actually goku was fighting Raditz at gohans age goku and vegeta are in their 50’s
There was a minor theme at the Tournament of Power of every saiyan finding it's own way to get better. Vegeta states it when he says he will find his own way to godhood and developing his "Royal Blue" form. But you can see it in Kale and her berserker saiyan form too.
That's important for Gohan for two reasons:
- Gohan was stated back during the Buu saga to be the fighter with the highest potential.
- Gohan can't get as much mileage of the super saiyan form as other characters.
You see, Gohan doesn't have the right mind and spirit to be the same style of super-saiyan as his father or even Vegeta. He is too much of a scholar and a lover of peace. His motivations to fight are VERY different and that makes it impossible for him to reach the same highs following the way of his father. He needed to lose himself in anger and fury to reach super saiyan 2, and the reason he has never gotten to the level he acquired in the fight with Cell is that that's not the person Gohan is.
His motivations run nearer to the need to protect his loved ones. That's the reason he participates in the T.o.P. For that lofty goal, his mystic form is MUCH better suited for him. Remember the mystic power of old Kai was meant to awaken Gohan hidden's potential, but nobody said it would awaken all at once. Gohan has potential enough to surpass his father, but his way to attain it is not the way of the saiyan but the way of the mystic warrior. At then end of the T.o.P., Ultimate Gohan might well be at SSGSS level.
About all this power amounting to nothing in the end... well, you see, it might not be at all Gohan's fault. As a matter of fact the fault may lie with reasons outside the series. It is well known that, at the end of the Cell saga and the beginning of the Buu saga, Toriyama wanted to pass the torch from Goku to Gohan, but was pressured by Toei to bring back Goku as the main character. For that, Gohan had to lose. And once Goku was back as the main character, Gohan wasn't needed to keep the motion forward and thus his downgrade to secondary character. Also, the whole Buu saga was an epic mess because of Toei executive meddling (and Toriyama's own weariness).
So, you see, the T.o.P. put Gohan back in the ring as a fighter. He still has all his potential (he got up-to-speed awfully quick after only some hours of training with Piccolo, which means all that power wasn't gone, only dormant) and if Toriyama can give him the right motivation we might still see great things from Gohan... great things different from the ones his father accomplished.
