This is awesome. I have always wondered about this cheap ones on the internet. This seems far more stable. Question: Is there a chance of any future firmware update undoing what mod you had to make in order for this to work in any system? Also any other chance of something breaking this mod?
The mod you did on the HP NVME card is that what made it bootable or would it be bootable without the mod? I noticed that you didn't do anything in the BIOS to designate the HP card as the boot drive so is this done automatically somehow? Sorry I'm a year late on these questions.
the mod allows the HP card to work in non-HP machines. It doesn't have anything to do with NVMe booting or not - that's natively supported on the T7910. without the mod, the card shuts itself off and the NVMe is not available in the system. you can use a "generic" NVMe adapter card and it should work just fine too.
Sorry to revive an old post... but I have a question, will a Duo or Quad version of this card work "normally" in an HP z820? I mean will the performance decrease regarding the PCIe 3.0 channels available?
The single Z Turbo modified should work. But any dual or quad version of these cards will require PCIe bifurcation. I could be wrong, but i'm not sure Z820 supports PCIe bifurcation.
IS there a plan of installing an idrac module in order to be able to access and use this workstation remotely .Would an idrac module be installed in this kind of machine or just an ipm module only. Because if it could monitor/troubleshoot motherboard it would bring these workstations more close to replace a rack server for quieter operation mostly .
@@ArtofServer A middle way to achive thi would be a raspberrypi with a custom os build in. Seen it somewhere dont remember where. This way any pc can be turn into a remote machine. OK, lets smash the Q1 thingy and see what we can see :-) In worst case throw this card away. Edit: It is working- with unsoldered the "Q1 something", I will test it against the cheap adapters. Thank you btw.
Hello, I love you videos and I have learned a lot watching them. Can I put a 1TB NVMe on my my Turbo Drive PCIe Card 742006-003? If not what is the Trubo Drive card that supports a 1TB or at least a 512GB NVMe. Thanks
I don't remember right now. I think the "bottom" one is thicker, maybe 2mm or 2.5mm. The top I think is 1.5mm or something like that. To be safe, I would just measure it yourself.
@@ArtofServer thanks, my pc that i order not arrive yet, just wanna buy the thermal pad in advanced, thanks for your response i'll wait till it arrived and measured it.
The akmod-nvidia package will automatically build the nvidia driver package and install it. The actual driver package is named kmod-nvidia--version>. I don't believe it does anything to blacklist the nouveau driver, so you might want to blacklist that via other means. Typically, once the kmod-nvidia package is installed, and you reboot, the nvidia driver is automatically loaded.
Hello how are you? I have two SAS (I think is 8482) seagate ST12000NM002G and I want to conect them to a traditional desktop motherboard. What do you recomend me to do that? thank you in advance
That's hard to say because I've seen some SAS-3 Seagate HDDs that have buggy firmware and will only work with SAS-3 controllers. If it weren't for that type of bug, I would suggest just getting a SAS-2 controller. See my HBA comparison video 2020 Edition, that explains several options. If your Seagate drives have that SAS-3 bug, then you'll have to get a SAS-3 controller.
this adaptor is almost as much as the m.2 drive itself. Over engendered or not its not going to make my drive do any faster and m.2 heatsinks are pretty cheap. Plus i have to buy a thermal pad on top of it? 12 dollar amazon adaptor it is .
Plz will it support a 1tb ssd nvme i'm upgrading my hp z620 and i'm so confused I primarily want it for fast storage i don't mind if it gonna be bootable or not But if you can tell me how i won't mind Ty for the video Plz help
It shouldn't be a problem. I have used 1TB NVMe M.2 SSDs in this and the Quad version without problems. If you want really fast storage, consider the HP Z Turbo Quad card instead.
I don't know, but not unusually long. If you''re have very long POST times with the screen dark, it might be that your CMOS battery is low. check to see if the CMOS battery has 3V or more. If not, replace it and set your clock again and it should boot faster. I've noticed these T7910 machines kill CMOS batteries if you aren't using them regularly.
If you're referring to the HP Z Turbo Drive, you can use it, but you'll be limited to PCIe 2.0 speeds and you cannot boot from it directly as Z600 doesn't support NVMe booting. You can use it as a normal NVMe drive as long as your OS has the NVMe driver. If you're running Linux, you can use a USB drive to bootstrap to the NVMe. I made a video showing how to do that.
@@jedocampo Sure, you can use this to just add more M.2 drives. There are many ways to add more storage, but keep in mind the Z600 is PCIe 2.0 - you may not be able to benefit from the full performance of newer technology like NVMe drives or even SAS-3 drives. I think the most meaningful storage upgrade for Z600 or Z800 generation machine is to go with SAS-2. Anything beyond that will be limited by the PCIe 2 platform.
okay thank you i'll keep that in mind.. im just using the machine for chia plotting/farming i don't need the speed either. do you have a expansion card for sas 2 drives?
This is a very cool modded adapter. Thank you very much for making it available.
Thanks!
Just purchased the adapter for my 7610, thanks.
Enjoy it!

great card. definitely will buy one. what about in the z820? do i need it to be unlocked?
I haven't tried the HP Z Turbo Drive in the Z820, but I suspect it will need to be unlocked. Booting NVMe in Z820 is not trivial though.
Remove Q1, right? That's just mean, HP... But they're in the 'Firmware updates behind paywalls' camp, so I'm not surprised.
Yup. HP updates are publicly available for workstations, but not servers.
Dell also makes NVME pcie cards, one with one "hole" for 1 SSD and one with 4 holes for 4 m.2 nvme. :)
Yes, they do, but not great design.
