A year ago I switched to a Hana ML MC cart from a Rega Exact MM for my Rega RP8. It was one of the best decisions I made and a massive improvement on my rig. Well worth the price. Enjoy it.
I thoroughly enjoy your Channel. My philosophy on upgrades is do your research, take your time don't rush your purchase and buy the best that you can afford. Many times that is not the most expensive route.
I did make the jump and loved it! Just like you I was told to gradually go up the ladder by other audiopholes. When I asked some of them why waste time and money doing upgrades, they had no proper answer. From an Ortofon Red, I went to a Benz Ruby 3 Microridge and an EAR Phono Box. You made the right move.
I agree you should make the giant leap if you can afford it. Who wants to climb the ladder, spending more money each time, to get to where you want to be if you can skip the middle and jump right to where you want to be. In the end you save money by going for it in one leap. I just did. I upgraded my entire analog front end from a cheap plastic technics turntable with inexpensive AT MM cartridge to a Dr. Feickert Volare with Hana ML cartridge. My phono preamp went from a very inexpensive Project MM only to a Sutherland TZ Vibe transimpedance phono stage. So I jumped from an analog front end which cost around $350 (many years ago I admit) to $6600. So I totally think you should do it in one step if you can afford to do it. Thanks for the video. As I type this I am waiting on the delivery of the setup described above...I can't wait.
Some people think there should be steps to getting the ultimate. It is about what you want and can afford, nothing less. Why wait? There is a Hana cartridge called a Blue that is supposed to be really good. My boss sells these at his shop. His advice has always been spot on. He knows how persnickety I am when it comes to my system. Hana has it going on! I believe in this company too!
Couldn’t quite swig the price for the Hana but just recently upgraded from a Ortofon 2M blue to the Nagaoka 300H. The difference is jaw dropping, finding myself listening with a perma grin on my face.
Alright alright alright! Love your videos. And hell yes I take as big of jumps every chance I get. Not just with my audio either. Anytime one can step up they should do it. Life is too short to be wasted on little steps.
Upgraded from Goldring E3 to Hana EL and couldn’t be happier using my Rogue RP-5 onboard phono stage. I can only imagine the refinements the ML offers. Nice choice!!!
I agree, make the jump, I went from an internal phono pre amp to a Pass Labs XP 15, still running a $500 Grado but the Pass is getting everything from it. The XP15 has gone up a $1,000 since I bought it. So glad I made the leap and nice to know I’ll never need more. 😎
The only questions I ever ask myself regarding upgrades is am I happy with what my current setup is? Will this upgrade help me make for an even better experience with my current setup? Am I prepared for the possibility that this upgrade may reveal limitations of other components that will then in theory lead me to wanting more from other components that I may not be able to afford? Should I refinance my house and get into some of those Wilson Audio towers that Henry Rollins has? Then I usually get stoned and eat some chocolate cake.
I recently went from a Pro-ject DC Carbon Esprit, Tube-box S and Ortofon Blue (a really great rig for the price) to a Reed, Hana ML, Icon Audio PS1 mk. II. HUGE JUMP and so worth it. You’re going to love that Hana! Jump as high as your wallet let’s you! It’s all about the experience and the pleasure. More is better!
I’m all for making giant leaps in my second purchases; if I’m testing the waters to see if I really want to go there (like a DAC/streamer/turntable/headphones), I go relatively cheaply. Once I’m sure, I go for the best that I can afford (notice I didn’t just say “the best”) or actually stretch a little bit further if there’s not that much a difference in price. It’s cheaper in the long run if you get what you really think you want first, instead of buying/selling at a loss/upgrading/selling at a loss/buying again. Would also suggest that if you have to put it on a credit card because you can’t buy it outright, save up the money first.
Still lovin the content man! My personal "jump" was huge: I got the chance tot start my turntable experience by buying the demo Michell Gyro SE from my dealer that included a DynaVector Karat 17D3 on a tecnoarm (at an amazing bargain price). Although that was 10 years ago, to this day I never felt the need to upgrade/change my system. Anyway, keep this channel rockin'! Horns up from the Netherlands.
That’s the best sounding cartridge in a €1k price range. It even forces to save couple of breakfasts to prefer it to a €600 one even in a limited budget situation. A next step after it I guess is at least €3k island.
So last year, I did a similar large upgrade. I went from an AT95E to an ATVM95SH, after repeated back to back listens to the Shibata and the Micro-Line stylus. I have a heavily modified Rega turntable so felt the underlying hardware justified the leap. I had it professionally set up and wow, its like night and day. I'm pulling out vinyl just to hear the shibata needle play them, it has literally transformed the sound and further heightened the vinyl experience. Again, at the price point, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better all-rounder, though I strongly recommend auditioning both the SH & ML if you can.
Couldn’t agree more about going from the Mani to the EAT. I went from the solid state Mani with a MM Goldring 1042 (still an awesome cart) to a tube based Tavish Classic phono pre and a Denon DL103r MC cart. It was either that or the Hana ML. I’m extremely glad I did, and I think the big jump is absolutely worth it. 🎶✌️🔊
I went from a goldring 1042 with a cheap project MM phono stage to a dynavector 20x2(H) into a Naim Audio stage line and a hicap. that was an expensive BIG JUMP but lots of fun and late night vinyl sessions and red wine has been enjoyed so well worth the outlay.
You won’t regret buying the ML. I had the SL, which was a great cartridge, and got damaged. Decided to get the ML and did not disappoint. It is a step above the SL but sometimes I wonder if the price difference justifies. MC’s are like valves - once you get into it, there’s no way back. Enjoy!
I have had quite a few Cartridges my last one was a Ortofon 2M Blue. I live in Canada at the time it cost me $500. Then I switched to a Nagaoka MP-500 which cost $1200 It's the same jump in price as you just did but I'm so glad I did it. The sound is so much better in every way. I expect you will knows the difference to and you will be pleased with your purchase.
Making a larger than incremental jump is fine if you have a good idea of what you’re looking for. I would personally make one jump at a time, just so I could become familiar with the improvement I made, then change another variable the next month.
If money were more disposable, I may consider that as it'd be a whole lot of fun. Sadly this stuff costs so much and the resale value is poor that a jump sometimes suits my wallet better.
@@thevinylattack I totally hear ya. Seems weird, but I haven’t seen my stylus more clean since I got the onzow. It weirdly doesn’t pierce or anything. I think that’s the magic of it
@@JesseShotland I almost bought one a while back but didn't for some reason. Then they seemed to explode on the scene and went up in price. I'm still bitter.
IMO, the right decision. I am also not the biggest fan of incremental upgrades. They just tend to cost more money at the end. You have to be sure what you want though. Testing different characteristics with lower end components is obviously far more forgiving for the wallet
I think for my budget,it's a hundred dollar cartridge.but to see someone's opinion on something new is priceless! If I hit the michigan lottery,I be buying one until then I'll just accept your opinion! Thanks for an informative video once again
I can’t quite make the jump to the Hana, but just pulled the trigger on the MP300. Currently running a Ortofon Blue with a shitt mani pre which has sounded solid but hoping this new cartridge will be a nice step up.
I haven't made as severe a jump money wise, but when I went from a $90 cartridge to a $230 cartridge seven years ago, the difference wasn't subtle. It brought me into another world and I don't ever see myself buying a cartridge under $230 or so ever again.
Oh man, I've been wanting to get ears on this! I've heard the Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC Star, which I was very impressed with. Normally that's enough to put me on the path. But the constant positive reviews on this have kept me curious, and the price being a little less than the SS certainly doesn't hurt either. The design just seems really smart on the ML though. I'll be excited to hear your thoughts on this one. *edit: just saw your bit about having the MP-150 too. Even better because I used to have that cart, so I'll have a more relatable baseline. I also totally agree with making BIG jumps in gear. If you go up slowly, I think you're more likely to have buyers remorse because it's not *that* different from what you already had.
@Lloyd Stout All set up with my phonostage. Currently using the Sutherland 20/20, which is more than capable and I've seen reviews of people pairing it with the ML. Appreciate the reply and the info!
@Marten Dekker Thanks, I knew about the lower cost rebuilds with SS, and that's a nice bonus! Also have heard questions about what will become of SS in the future. Seems like a big question, but for the foreseeable future their products still seem to be doing quite well. On Stylast, my dealer said he used that or something similar on my Mastertracker when he set it up. Haven't had any issues, so I'd consider using it again.
Hail! All hail the threaded nuts! Never came across a situation where I said “”You know, I’d so much rather have tiny bolts and washers to try to screw together on an expensive, fragile cartridge with my big man hands”.
I'm glad you've moved to some kind of micro line/line contact cartridge. Overall you're going to find they're far more detailed than the elliptical cartridge you've been using. Most track well, but because of the small profile surface noise is generally more apparent on records that haven't been cleaned well. Now an ultrasonic cleaner becomes an imperative.
Looking forward to your review...personally I agree, if you can afford it I’d say go for it. I’ve been eyeing the umami red myself. One more month and I should be able to afford it.
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to hearing your experience with the Hana! I just got a Rega Planar 3 with the Rega Elys 2 cartridge. Big upgrade for me! Eventually, I'll replace the Elys 2 with the Exact 2 ($300 vs $600 cartridge), as I've heard it's a significant improvement.
Nice! I have one on back order for the end of April. My dealer is actually out of stock as of last week. I moved from that nagaoka 150 to Hana sl then Hana ml. I loved the nagaoka with my built in phono stage and the Hana really pulls ahead with a commensurate outboard phono stage.
I was surprised how well the Nagaoka did compared to the Hana. Certainly there are differences, but I really got used to the Nagaoka mid range and now I need to re-train my ear some.
Sweet. I'd upgrade if I had the moolah. I hope you paid attention to the set up procedure. I think it's fun to do and not rocket science as long as you have some basic equipment. It also helps dial you in to any issues you may encounter in the future.
Good reviews on your channel. I enjoy your videos because they are informative and your delivery is calm and reasonable. I believe that a cartridge is very important to the sound of a stereo system. So is the source. Buy the best records and keep them clean. We are lucky because we have some very good pressings available... if one can afford them. Please keep us informed regarding the bubbling cleaner for records.
Course I’d make the jump. The Hana ML is my next cartridge and I’m going from a Dynavector DV10x5 moving coil that I’ve had for a number of years. Just waiting to get the funds together for a new turntable I’m getting later in the year
@@thevinylattack I ended up with an Avid Diva ll SP turntable and I got a good deal on a Dynavector XX2 mk2 cartridge. Gonna be using my old Michell Technoarm tonearm for the time being. Gonna have a go at setting it all up tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear it
Can’t wait to hear your take ;). I have the “MH” on my Rega P8, just a very small amount of listening told me is absolutely sings with my Moon 110LP V2. On the note of upgrades I went from a sub 1k table with cart to a 4K table with cart and separate phono amp. So I am terrible example of taking small bites. While I admire those who do this, once I heard the potential in vinyl I decided to go all in. While I will still upgrade the Phono Stage at some point this table will be with me quite some time. You should review the Moon 110LP V2 as like the Hana, nothing can touch it at its price point. Happy listening my friend!!
I’m at a similar crossroads. I am currently using a 2M red, I know the 2M blue is a simple, affordable and rewarding upgrade yet I keep gravitating to the 2M black. I’m not even sure my senses are refined enough to know the difference at that level...
If you can make the jump to the black, you'd probably be very happy if you like the Ortofon sound. New things open up sonically as you upgrade and it's pretty exciting when you hear them.
Go for the Black - I've got one on my Michell Gyro SE and its superb. I feel that as you upgrade any part of the system you'll always want a bit more so go for the big jumps whenever you can - it'll save time and money in the long term!
I recommend the bronze Instead of the black they are about the same but bronce is more forgiven if you play a record that is not in that good shape you gonna hear that. I went from the blue to the Denon 103r MC LO and it’s great. And is not to much of the difference in price.
Howdy VA. I finally got a MoFi b-52’s pressing, thanks for the tip. Sonically it stomps all over the rest of my vinyl collection. I will eventually upgrade my cart, probably with a Zu.
If you can afford to make it, go for it. I've been keeping my eyes on a few different carts, and can't wait for your full review. My current everyday cart is the Ortofon Blue, and I'd like to take the leap as well.
I agree with you, if you can afford the jump, go for it. While this is not a perfect analogy (more a brag really😅), I went from a $300 cart to a vintage one (well, a couple in fact) that would retail for thousands today if they were still available (Grace Level II) and I do NOT regret it, the improvement was astounding. BTW, they cost me (2nd hand) far less than what I suggested they would cost now, in fact less than the cheaper one I mentioned. They were both a great score.....sometimes you can just be plain lucky.
Must admit I choked on my coffee when you said 1200 dollars for a cartridge, as a newbie that's more than my entire system 🤣. It will be interesting to see if it matches your expectations.
Its a high end thing my goldring elite came with it in the top too. I love the analogy i got into mc a while back after having mm why not! I loved the microline cartridge at150mlx ml is fantastic.
Would love to make upgrades. Been collecting now for little over 3 years and went 0-100 fairly quickly. Limited not only on funds, but space. With the collection of vinyl I have amassed, and the small space I have am limited on how much equipment to upgrade. Currently going b/w Ortofon Blue and Denon DL-110. Both sound great, but like the Blue for lower end music, and the Denon for quick response when listening to various Thrash, Death, Black, and Melodic Swedish Death Metal.
Once you go MicroLine, you won't go back. The low innergroove distortion alone is well worth it. And the alignment isn't that complicated either unless there is some weird azimuth problems. A cartridge body with a broader front edge helps a great deal, though.
Went from a Yamaha turntable (purchased in 1976) and an Ortofon Black MM ($250) to a Clearaudio Concept with carbon fiber tonearm and a Hana ML. Incremental? Not really, and most definitely the right move. The Hana is amazing, but you were right to have a pro set it up. FYI, I am also considering the EAT E Glo but like the Hana, I couldn't locate your follow up video.
To go big, or stay small? . . . I think we all struggle with this question. For me it comes down to how much of myself I’m willing to invest in the project. I recently real Paul’s (PS Audio) advice to go either digital (DAC) or analog (turntable). I’m not sure yet which I like better, so I dropped money on a preamp. If I decide to go analog, I would be willing to sink $2,500 on a phono stage (but not $4,000 or $8,000); if I decide to go digital, I’ll sink $1,300 to $2,500 on a DAC. But since things are changing so fast on the digital end, some wise heads counsel holding off on big expenditures for DACs because of the improvements coming down the line. I think the best case for going slow is that, that as an audiophile, you are not only exploring the medium (music), and the gear, you’re exploring yourself as well. Take your time, enjoy the journey, it isn’t all about the destination. 🙂
Check out the Audio Technica cartridges like the AT33PTG/2 and the ATOC9MXL. They are $550 and you get a Boron Cantilever cantilever and a Microline stylus. Nothing wrong with Hana, it’s just hard to justify at that price point.
Hi , love you channel. I have recently purchased the Hana too, great cartridge. Still needs running in, 25hrs so far, but so far sounds fantastic. Turntable is Acoustic Signature Hurricane Neo with Acoustic Signature TA2000 Neo arm. What is your current set up? Amp, turntable etc
I'm awaiting my fist Ortofon 2m red. It should be a step or two up for my current stylus (cartridge and headshell) without spending a ton of money. The only reason, as I can see, for taking smaller steps would be 'drastically improving my stylus would require making some other system upgrades and by the time my upgrades warranted said stylus it may be time to place that very stylus'. I had to come up with something haha. But you're absolutely right, why walk through two feet of sewage if you can jump over it...? I love your videos, keep 'em comin'.
Trying to keep your hifi pieces in line with each other can be challenging from time to time. I'm glad you're liking the videos, thanks for the encouragement.
Excellent choice! You and I have similar taste lol. I'm currently deciding between a hana ML or EAT Jo no.5 to go with my EAT E-glo petite. Should sound excellent, enjoy and thanks for the entertainment!
In the end is there a review? I have the same Nagaoka MP-150 right now and I'm searching for reviews on an upgrade to the Hana ML. Thanks in advance for any feedback! Gear: REGA P6 and Moon 110LP-v2.
I can only imagine that someone would give advice to improve quality gradually, because for someone new to it all, it would be easy to throw a lot of money at all the wrong things, before you really understand what you are doing. However, If someone has taken the time to educate themselves and they know what they want and why... They should go for it. I had the Schiit Mani. After watching one of your videos, I started considering a switch to the iFi Zen... Then I discovered the iFi Black label and started to feel that the zen would be a sideways move. I got the black label, and it transformed my system. I still smile every time I play a record and marvel at what that thing can do. Cartridge is my weak link also and the Hana ML seemed to be emerging as a good candidate. "punching above it's weight" is pretty much my yardstick for gear decisions... trying to achieve that hifi performance on a midfi budget.
I dont see why one couldnt make a big upgrade jump. I myself enjoy my Nagaoka MP200 but now run an ATVM95ML as it tracks much better. Im sensitive to distortions and dont like to risk harming my records so Im waiting until I can retip a MicroLine or Ridge on my MP200 or buy an MP500. I did try a Schiit Mani because of all the rave reviews by the way. Found I did not prefer it over my 80s Cyrus 2. They were both pretty equal on the low and highs, but the midrange was much more solid on my old Cyrus, so Im still looking for a Phono stage to upgrade to, afraid I have to spend close to that 500$ + range to do it though.
I have the MP200 too, I was running it with the Mani, but fancied a tube phono to test. I got a Yaqin tube phono with a lesbox mod. Those Cyrus amps are good, I still have my Cyrus 1 knocking around
Big leaps are cheaper overall. At least that is how I justify my purchases to myself. I jumped from a Yamaha R-N602 to a Hegel H390 amplifier. I figure I saved the cost of 10 years of upgrades in between. I am planning on jumping from a Nagaoka MP110 to maybe a Hana SL. The ML might be too much for me.
If I had the $$$ I would make the jump.. but considering my entire system that I upgraded from a crappy all-in-one Teac system 12 months ago cost $1250 AUD, it won't be happening any time soon.. my next jump will likely be a few years from now when I upgrade to a Rega Planar 3 and get some new speakers (have Cambridge Audio SX50's, intrigued by Elac and Klipsch, haven't heard either, probably will stay with the same Cambridge Audio AXA35 integrated amp). But honestly, I'm very happy with I have right now. As an aside, what is your full system Chris? I haven't watched all your videos yet, so not sure if you have already covered it.
I haven't covered it fully. I have a Clearaudio concept with the satisfy black arm and now the Hana ML. That runs into my EAT E-glo petit. I have a Blusound node 2I for streaming and my integrated is a Hegel H90. My speakers fluctuate but I'm currently looking at picking up some ATC SCM19's.
If I could afford better equipment I definitely would. I currently have a Sumiko Blue Point II on a Project RPM 5 Carbon running into a Schitt Mani and a Sugarcube SC1 mini Phono. I love them all but I keep seeing all these guys with way more expensive stuff and would love to really upgrade. No baby steps.
Could not, would not make that jump as it's well outside my price range and system. I did go from the AT head that was on my Pioneer PLX-500 to an Ortofon Red and I did notice the difference there. Have you been to UHF Records in Royal Oak? If so, what did you think?
Certainly nothing wrong with modest jumps in gear. From here out that'll probably be what I'll have to do. I've been to UHF several times, it's a pretty cool mid size store with a solid Metal and Punk selection.
Great video! To answer your question, I'm actually going in the opposite direction... At the moment I have a Benz Ref s (1920 usd (approximately the price in my country (Denmark)), and was dreaming and hoping for upgrading to the Benz LP s (2990 usd). Then I came across this Hama ML (1350 usd), and after sleepless days and nights reading reviews, I have to try one of these. If you and your fellow colleagues reviewers are right, I simply can't go wrong on this one. And what's more, I can afford to buy my wife a good cup of coffee, and she'll love that...I hope ;)

Looks great. I'll be curious to hear what you think about it after the break-in period. I have 8-9 different carts, each in it's own headshell, but I mostly only use 4 of them. The Stanton 680EEE that came on my used SL-1200, the Shure M97XE, which I like for older, not so perfect records, the Nagaoka MP110, which I also really like but find it's output to be just a little too hot for my phono preamp (MoFi StudioPhono), and my most recent, and favorite, a 35 year old AT130E, which I recently fitted with a new AT VMN40ML. The AT microline stylus really takes things to the next level. I'd say the bass is slightly subdued, in comparison to the Nagaoka, but it's very well balanced and the detail it extracts is amazing. Also, IGD is negligible, even on long records.
I would totally go for it if I had the dough to do so. If you find something you're really interested in, jump on it! LOL...here I am bragging on the new Ortophon Blue that I just got yesterday. It's absolutely fantastic and the best cart I have ever used thus far. But I sure wouldn't mind trying out one of these fancier ones that you've got there and give it a listen. I hope you'll let us know soon about how beautiful it sounds! 👍
@thevinylattack Did you ever review that Hana ML? I saw your video about the ethos that mentions the Hana, but never actually saw the review of the Hana ML. I have the same turntable as you, and want to know your thoughts on it.
I really enjoy your channel and have learned some neat things from it! Your photography is also excellent. And, you turned me onto Mofi! But, Muck Fichigan! (Ha, at least they made it out of the first round... so, good luck to you guys as much as it pains me to write that. :D) With regard to the question you pose, should you just make the leap or build up? About 5 years ago, I went from $200 Klipsch computer speakers, to speakers that cost 4k. The difference, was absolutely huge! I learned what soundstage, and imaging, and detail were because of that upgrade. I listened to music more than I ever had before. And I found myself listening to songs I knew so well, and being flabbergasted at how different these songs I knew were. Everything sounded so good, and new, and so much better. Then last year, I dropped 10k on new speakers. But this time, there was good and bad. The good, was that the imaging and sound stage improved even more. These speakers now sort of envelop you into the environment the music is recorded in. And I can absolutely find the instrument or singer in the soundstage. Instruments and vocals are even more accurate. And the bad, is that instruments and vocals are even more accurate. Singers who were perfect, angelic, now sound, human. You can hear their lips open and close, their breathing, the accidental drum or string hit. It was jarring at first to hear, SO much detail, to having the singer feet from me in my living room. So yes, I do think that people should make a jump. But realize, at least IMO, you only get that one jump. Everything else is incremental, and, you almost have to listen more to the differences, rather than enjoying the music. I'm using my dad's pioneer PL-10 (I think) turntable with an AT-95 cartridge ($30). And I think I'm enjoying vinyl with that because, it isn't so hot, but, it's SO MUCH fun to listen to. I own less than 30 albums. And, I might buy the VPI Super Sprout - 4k - to make that one jump. ( as stupid as that is... ) But in your case, you already had a cartridge that was $300? So moving to $1,200 - I'm curious to hear what you think of it. And then ROI wise, if you went to a 10k cartridge after this one, is it REALLY that much better? Anyway - I really like your channel! And I'm excited to hear what you have coming up review wise and what you think of the differences between the cartridges.
There's a lot to unpack here, but I think you're probably right. Now that I've jumped from a $350 to a $1200, the upgrades won't be so black and white. Of course, for the money, they'll pretty much all have to be incremental now. Happy to bleed Maize and Blue!
Jump? No. Mainly because I can't even begin to afford it now or even in the future. If I won the LOTTO then yes! I have heard it on a few other channels and it does sound great! I also have the MP-150 and a few other carts I play on my channel. I have two Schiit Mani's and I've listened to other nice preamps here on YT that are in the thousands that sound great, but lack of funds always stops me. I've bought what I could afford and enjoy what I play. 🎸🎧
I’ve heard the same great things about the Hana ML AND, I have heard the same thing about making the large jump. I got back into vinyl a couple of years ago and purchased a Fluance RT85 TT with the Ortofon 2M Blue. Truthfully, I’ve been quite pleased with the TT and cartridge. But, I have been eyeing a Rega P6 with the Ania Pro, but some have suggested jumping to the Hana ML. But the next question is, is that too much cartridge for that turntable?
I don't really think it's too much. Keeping in mind that the cart does most of the heavy lifting in the sound department and the P6 is a solid table, I think it'd be fine.
Only if I had the rest of the TT setup in place. You need a TT, arm and phono preamp that is good enough to get what is in that cartridge out to the speakers. So for me, no. I'd need to upgrade all of the supporting equipment first.
If the cartridge works compliance-wise with your turntable and arm (do the research and calculations), this could be your last cartridge for a good long while - if you only play clean records.
If you know what you want and you can afford it, make the leap. I'd first make sure that I had the turntable, tonearm, and phono stage that would support a $1200 cartridge though!
So... it's been almost a year ! What's the status of this cartridge vs others ? What turntable did you use ? Which EAT phone pre-amp did you pair this with ? I have the Hana EL on a Fluance using a PS Audio Phono PreAmp. Happy as can be !
My favorite small shop is Village Vinyl in Warren. Those guys are super cool with some hard to find stuff. My favorite big shop is Dearborn Music. It's just hard to beat their selection and back catalog.
Are you kidding! Absolutely I'd make the jump, without hesitation. You made the right move. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
I'm looking forward to breaking it in :-)
A year ago I switched to a Hana ML MC cart from a Rega Exact MM for my Rega RP8. It was one of the best decisions I made and a massive improvement on my rig. Well worth the price. Enjoy it.
So far so good, I'm having to get used to the major differences so I think it'll take some time.
The Hana ML is A BEAST! I love it vs. carts for even a few hundred dollars less. If they ever raise the price, I will cry... I want a backup.
I thoroughly enjoy your Channel. My philosophy on upgrades is do your research, take your time don't rush your purchase and buy the best that you can afford. Many times that is not the most expensive route.
A very good piece of advice. Thanks for the kind words on the channel.
I realize I'm pretty randomly asking but does anybody know of a good place to stream new movies online?
@Crosby Cesar flixportal
@Jakob Jaxtyn thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it!
@Crosby Cesar you are welcome xD
I did make the jump and loved it! Just like you I was told to gradually go up the ladder by other audiopholes. When I asked some of them why waste time and money doing upgrades, they had no proper answer. From an Ortofon Red, I went to a Benz Ruby 3 Microridge and an EAR Phono Box. You made the right move.
I feel that I did as well. I have zero regrets.
I'm a big fan of the Nagaoka stuff, I'm sure you'll enjoy that for a while to come.
Alright alright alright! Love your videos. And hell yes I take as big of jumps every chance I get. Not just with my audio either. Anytime one can step up they should do it. Life is too short to be wasted on little steps.
I can dig it.
I really enjoy your videos and content and hope this channel becomes successful. Enjoy that new cartridge and excited for the review.
Thanks very much for the encouragement, I look forward to doing more.
Upgraded from Goldring E3 to Hana EL and couldn’t be happier using my Rogue RP-5 onboard phono stage. I can only imagine the refinements the ML offers. Nice choice!!!
Couldn't agree more!
I agree, make the jump, I went from an internal phono pre amp to a Pass Labs XP 15, still running a $500 Grado
but the Pass is getting everything from it. The XP15 has gone up a $1,000 since I bought it. So glad I made the leap and nice to know I’ll never need more. 😎
That sounds like a pretty nice upgrade.
definitely but slowly by component to see hopefully the huge differences for the better
The first three questions here are very solid advice.
So far, I'm very happy. My wallet however, needs a little break.
I just lean ahead of my skis from the get go.
Those Gyro decks really get overlooked and its a shame.
This was definitely one of my more eye opening upgrades.
I'm really enjoying this channel! Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks much, I'll certainly do my best!
I have no regrets in making the leap.
I would always make a jump to whatever I can afford and makes sense. Always.
That seems to be my method as of late.
for sure, saves money in the long run
I went from a goldring 1042 with a cheap project MM phono stage to a dynavector 20x2(H) into a Naim Audio stage line and a hicap. that was an expensive BIG JUMP but lots of fun and late night vinyl sessions and red wine has been enjoyed so well worth the outlay.
I don't regret the jump for a minute.
You won’t regret buying the ML. I had the SL, which was a great cartridge, and got damaged. Decided to get the ML and did not disappoint. It is a step above the SL but sometimes I wonder if the price difference justifies. MC’s are like valves - once you get into it, there’s no way back. Enjoy!
So far, so good that's for sure.
So far it's been a lot of fun.
Great video. +1 for Michigan shirt. Go Blue!
Highly recommend the onzow stylus cleaner. I used those little brushes for years and out off buying the onzow. Once I did, I was pretty blown away!
I wonder about those leaving a residue in the stylus though. Something I'll have to check out.
That's certainly the case for cartridges, but thankfully speakers, DAC's and amps are easy to return if you don't like the sound.
I just got a Hana SL and love it... would definitely upgrade to ML at the right time.
I've heard good things about the SL as well. It seems Hana is the current 'in thing'.
My next cart is the Hana SL.... waiting because I just purchased new loudspeakers. Thx for the review
Hope you enjoy it!
I think for my budget,it's a hundred dollar cartridge.but to see someone's opinion on something new is priceless! If I hit the michigan lottery,I be buying one until then I'll just accept your opinion! Thanks for an informative video once again
I'm glad you enjoyed it. And for a hundred bucks you'd do very well with the Nagaoka MP 110. You can find them around that price from time to time.
I can’t quite make the jump to the Hana, but just pulled the trigger on the MP300. Currently running a Ortofon Blue with a shitt mani pre which has sounded solid but hoping this new cartridge will be a nice step up.
I really prefer the Nagaoka stuff over the Ortofon so hopefully you will as well since you made the leap. Keep us posted.
I haven't made as severe a jump money wise, but when I went from a $90 cartridge to a $230 cartridge seven years ago, the difference wasn't subtle. It brought me into another world and I don't ever see myself buying a cartridge under $230 or so ever again.
That's usually what happens. We hear the change and can't go back.
I'll be spending the rest of the evening putting it through its paces.
Any update on the ultrasonic cleaner you talked about awhile ago?
It hasn't released yet, but I'm hearing maybe late May.
Hail! All hail the threaded nuts! Never came across a situation where I said “”You know, I’d so much rather have tiny bolts and washers to try to screw together on an expensive, fragile cartridge with my big man hands”.
Instant. I’m also thinking about getting this cartridge sometime
So far I'm really liking it. I doubt you'd be disappointed.
Not to mention heavily reduced (or eliminated, depending on the disc) sibilant distortion and inner groove distortion. A real treat is in store 🙂
So far it's going well, I look forward to running it in.
Looking forward to your review...personally I agree, if you can afford it I’d say go for it. I’ve been eyeing the umami red myself. One more month and I should be able to afford it.
That umami is a really good looking cart. You'll have to let us know how it sounds once you've run it in.
Back in the early 80 I went from MM to MC I have never looked back. Make the JUMP it is worth it.
I haven't regretted it so far...
Those Rega are a solid buy, nice one.
Yeah! Have yet to hear it.
Attack!
Sweet. I'd upgrade if I had the moolah. I hope you paid attention to the set up procedure. I think it's fun to do and not rocket science as long as you have some basic equipment. It also helps dial you in to any issues you may encounter in the future.
I had my hifi guy come set it up for me. I didn't want to tinker with this one just yet.
Thanks for the kind words. I'll certainly get a video out as soon as the cleaner arrives as well as the other things I've opened recently.
Course I’d make the jump. The Hana ML is my next cartridge and I’m going from a Dynavector DV10x5 moving coil that I’ve had for a number of years. Just waiting to get the funds together for a new turntable I’m getting later in the year
Let us know what you end up with.
@@thevinylattack I ended up with an Avid Diva ll SP turntable and I got a good deal on a Dynavector XX2 mk2 cartridge. Gonna be using my old Michell Technoarm tonearm for the time being. Gonna have a go at setting it all up tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear it
@@colinhathaway9493 I bet. That sounds like quite the setup.
@@thevinylattack thanks mate. Just got to set up my cartridge now
@@colinhathaway9493 Always a good time.
If I can get my hands on one, I'd be more than happy to review it. Sounds like you have a very solid system that should keep you happy for years.
Go for the 2M Black, you'll heard the difference straight away
🛸🐄 “Attack”
Howdy VA. I finally got a MoFi b-52’s pressing, thanks for the tip. Sonically it stomps all over the rest of my vinyl collection. I will eventually upgrade my cart, probably with a Zu.
Those Mofi pressings are excellent pieces, I'm looking forward to picking up more.
If you can afford to make it, go for it. I've been keeping my eyes on a few different carts, and can't wait for your full review. My current everyday cart is the Ortofon Blue, and I'd like to take the leap as well.
It was a big step from the Nagaoka to the Hana, but it seems very worth it so far...
It's definitely not a cheap upgrade, but I've also worked at building a system for a while. This doesn't happen overnight ;-)
@@thevinylattack if I could afford it I'd do the same thing, and I totally understand that this is a life long journey.
Its a high end thing my goldring elite came with it in the top too.
I love the analogy i got into mc a while back after having mm why not!
I loved the microline cartridge at150mlx ml is fantastic.
So far I'm quite happy with how things are sounding.
@@thevinylattack Great! Really glad to talk with you before too. Ordered a brush!
Luckily cartridges don't take up much room.
Once you go MicroLine, you won't go back. The low innergroove distortion alone is well worth it. And the alignment isn't that complicated either unless there is some weird azimuth problems. A cartridge body with a broader front edge helps a great deal, though.
So far I'm a pretty big fan. I think this will hold me for some time.
I still need to make those videos. It's on a long list of things to do.
All very valid points.
Check out the Audio Technica cartridges like the AT33PTG/2 and the ATOC9MXL. They are $550 and you get a Boron Cantilever cantilever and a Microline stylus. Nothing wrong with Hana, it’s just hard to justify at that price point.
Those are fine carts but I don't think they can do what the Hana can do. It seems like justifying expense stuff is half the hobby ;-)
My tonearm was a 300 model and went to a 1000 model great value.
If it's what you want and you can afford it, do it. Just make sure it's what you want.
Making sure is always the scary part.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Let us know what you end up with.
Hi. Like your stuff. Is there a follow up on this?
I haven't made a full review yet, no. It is on my list however.
I would definitely go for it….let me know if the sonics improved with your new cartridge justify the money spent.
I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
In the end is there a review? I have the same Nagaoka MP-150 right now and I'm searching for reviews on an upgrade to the Hana ML. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Gear: REGA P6 and Moon 110LP-v2.
I haven't done the review yet unfortunately. I got swamped with products to review after this video. It is on my list of things to do though.
You make a good point about new people not knowing what to buy. I hadn't really thought of it that way.
You probably would need to make a bit of a jump in price to get the next group up from your phono pre. Unfortunately that's how it is in hifi.
That Hegel is something else.
Hi, really enjoying your channel. Have you mentioned the turntable you're using? Maybe I missed it. Thanks.
I have a Clearaudio concept.
You have a very solid base, just remember it all takes time. Save what you can when you can and you'll get there.
I haven't heard the Benz, but I can certainly say that the Hana is a great sounding cart. Let us know what you think when you get it all set up.
@@thevinylattack I will :)
A friend just got his new orto bronze and...welll...he expected much more from it. Personaly I think it's great for the price.

I miss the ability to switch out headshells from time to time, but I'm so happy with my current setup that I quickly get past it.
Definitely keep us posted. It's always exciting to get some new gear, enjoy it!
Hoping to hear your review on this cart soon. This us one I’ve been interested in for a while now

@thevinylattack Did you ever review that Hana ML? I saw your video about the ethos that mentions the Hana, but never actually saw the review of the Hana ML. I have the same turntable as you, and want to know your thoughts on it.
I still haven't gotten around to it. Sorry about that.
I really enjoy your channel and have learned some neat things from it! Your photography is also excellent. And, you turned me onto Mofi! But, Muck Fichigan! (Ha, at least they made it out of the first round... so, good luck to you guys as much as it pains me to write that. :D)
With regard to the question you pose, should you just make the leap or build up?
I have a Hana EH on the way!
I have made slow step ups in my system so I can actually hear the improvements. It`s also dependant on money too.
Money is always a determining factor in this hobby unfortunately.
I have the Hana SL. I am wondering how much better the ML is with the better Micro Line over the Shibata stylus.
Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to compare them.
Jump? 🎸🎧
Sounds like you have a solid setup. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy it as that's what matters.
There is wisdom in knowing that building one step at a time is best for you.
@@thevinylattack Yes, at this point I would have to spend at least $4k to get to that level. Next up, a new TT.
I want go MC but because I have 3 turntables I can afford to play around with MMs before I finally do upgrade.
Yes go for it
It's worked for me so far...
I'd say, definitely go for the gusto, get all the sound you can afford.
It hasn't let me down yet.
If the cartridge works compliance-wise with your turntable and arm (do the research and calculations), this could be your last cartridge for a good long while - if you only play clean records.
I can say for certain that I don't anticipate buying anything for for quite some time.
If you know what you want and you can afford it, make the leap. I'd first make sure that I had the turntable, tonearm, and phono stage that would support a $1200 cartridge though!
That's pretty much the path I took. The jumps are big, but it took time ;-)
being a fellow michigander do you happen to know what Chris charges for a cart set-up?
Off hand I think it might be about a hundred bucks.
Hana is my new ortofon
So... it's been almost a year ! What's the status of this cartridge vs others ? What turntable did you use ? Which EAT phone pre-amp did you pair this with ? I have the Hana EL on a Fluance using a PS Audio Phono PreAmp. Happy as can be !
I've listed my gear quite a few times over the past year, but I haven't had a head to head with the Hana yet.
@@thevinylattack OK... Go BLUE !!!
What are your favorite Michigan record shops
Keep up the good work my fellow Michigander
My favorite small shop is Village Vinyl in Warren. Those guys are super cool with some hard to find stuff. My favorite big shop is Dearborn Music. It's just hard to beat their selection and back catalog.
@@thevinylattack Ok thanks
Sorry, what table are you having it put on?
A Clearaudio Concept with the Satisfy Black tone arm.
