My Battle with Pre-Game Anxiety

  • Every year, I share my testimony as part of my personal reflection. This practice has become more than just a recap of challenges-it’s a way for me to stay grounded, learn, and grow. This year’s topic is something I’ve been hesitant to address: my struggle with pre-game anxiety. I don’t know how many more seasons I have left, so it feels even more important to be vulnerable about what I’ve learned. Sharing these stories matters, not just for me but hopefully for anyone going through their own challenges.
In the video, I explore three key lessons I’ve learned through anxiety:
    1. You are not alone - So many people experience anxiety, and it’s okay to struggle with it.
    2. Anxiety doesn’t define you - Who you are goes far beyond the fear or doubts you feel.
    3. Anxiety may never fully go away, but that’s okay - It’s about learning to live with it and finding strength through it.
    我學到的三件事:
    1. 你並不孤單,很多人都在面對焦慮。
    2. 焦慮並不代表你的全部。
    3. 焦慮也許永遠不會消失,但我們可以學習與它共存
Thank you for listening, and I hope my experience resonates with anyone going through something similar.

Jeremy, I was one of those guys who wrote a lot of bad stuff about you on a lot of internet forums. I honestly didn't think you would be reading those comments and how it could effect you. It really puts things into perspective for me that public figures are humans just like everyone else. I am sorry for all the hate you got. Nobody should go through what you went through. Thank you for shedding light on online bullying and racism. Just because we're behind a computer, our words spread like wildfire.

I feel like Jeremy is too humble. It’s like he feels he doesn’t deserve to be in his position. I think he needs to realize teams picked him up for a reason; because he’s a good point guard and a good teammate and a good person

Thank you for this, Jeremy. Anxiety has had a stronghold on me for the longest time but it has been aggravated over the past few months due to a traumatic family event and career pressure. You speak with so much wisdom and courage, I could relate to your struggles (although in a different context) and the verses you shared resonated with me - they brought me to tears. I think God is speaking to me. Much love to you and God bless xx

It takes a lot of strength to stand up and talk about things that make you vulnerable. I can only express my utmost respect for you Jeremy and I know exactly how hard it is to feel like you can't live up to the expectations of others. Thank you for your words and openness, that is the sign of true greatness. I've enjoyed watching you play in the nba before, now I know all the more what you've taken on for your dream. What always helped me was to realize that it doesn't matter what others think and that I don't give a shit about it… ✌️

Having spent 9 years in the NBA and over 14 years in his basketball career, longer than most basketball players, I always wondered what made this man so strong. I never expected Jeremy to have such a side of struggle and anxiety off the court.
Thank you for always being sincere in sharing your struggles and selflessly telling us about your experiences. It helps me realize that I am not alone.
I believe your anxiety stems from always striving for better performance, whether in the NBA, CBA, or even playing in Taiwan. It shows not only your respect for yourself but also for the audience.
It’s not just your impressive skills, but your serious attitude toward the game that makes you my most admired athlete. Well, I hope you can truly enjoy the new season!

I needed this passage jeremy.. Anxiety has had an immense stronghold on me this past month, stemming hyperventilation, panic attacks, head, heart, and digestive issues but truly no weapon shall prosper‼️🙏🏽I’ve been in and out of the hospital this past month but nothing major to be found other than it to be anxiety, so just goes to show how the enemy is truly always working to infiltrate our mind, but the Lord indeed prevails🙏🏽I’ve been feeling much better recently as I’ve been actively seeking God more, and this passage is confirmation to me that God is truly in favor🤞🏽🤍Bless u bro‼️

Since you created Linsanity, I started watching the NBA. Until you came to Taiwan to play the Steelers and Kings, my whole family still paid attention to you!
We all love you and like to watch you play. We all know that you must have high self-esteem. This is a source of pressure!
You are 35 years old and have suffered serious injuries. Winning or losing is no longer important, because what we want to see is Jeremy Lin enjoying the process of playing. You know what? It is a pleasure to watch you play! This enough!

Fear and anxiety is definitely a difficult emotion to overcome. Thank you for sharing, this video was well produced and articulate. This reminds me of when Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan revealed about their depression, mental health is just as important as physical health for professional athletes. It's a nice reminder that we're all human beings, fans can easily forget and expect athletes to be this invincible super human and they get paid so well that they have no problems with their life. I'm glad you're managing your pre-game anxieties, it must not be easy especially since your performance is entirely dependent on your career and job. You're awesome and keep up the good work!

Anybody think its no big deal and we may get used to it
But when I see the crowd my heart starts pounding! But I know when I get on it I will or I should enjoy the stage😳
So usually I'll push myself and ignore the problem
Thankyou for sharing the story, I will keep learning how to deal with my anxiety. Love from Taiwan for 12 years see u in the new taipei home court this weekend

Jeremy, I am not sure if you will see this. I used to work for MLSE (Raptors) and I walked by you and Siakam once. Too bad I didn't have enough courage to speak to you. As a fan since Linsanity I saw all your ups and downs and you were struggling and doesn't seems to be having fun in Toronto. I feel like you can feel that everyone wants the 2nd Linsanity everywhere you go myself included, to the point not for my enjoyment but to be able to tell everyone it wasn't a fluke. If we feel that way imagine what you feel. I keep wanting to tell you although we all look up to you and hope you will be our stereotype breaker, it breaks our heart seeing you getting crushed by the pressure. I knew you must have spoken to lots of people but I was hoping may be the voice of a fan telling you can relax and don't bare the "obligation" would help. And then I saw you cried in Taiwan after that championship summer. I couldn't help to feel disappointed like our hero fell, but then I was mad I couldn't even find the courage to offer you some words that might help. I am so happy seeing you open up more in recent years and teaching the new generation of Asian baller about your journey. I really hope one of them becomes an all stars in the nba and tell the world you are their mentor. You deserve a place in basketball history
