- Fire 8 NN.MC3 vs SF14 September 8, 2021. Score is Fire: 4 wins, 2 losses, 4 draws. I did several short chess tournaments in Arena, then played back PGN files recorded here in Winboard with 5, 10, 15 and 20 minute time controls of 10 games each tournament against SF13 & 14, so the games here are played back much faster. There were always at least 4-7 draws against both SF versions in each tournament with very dynamic games on my i9 9980HK (5 GHz cpu, 16 threads, 32GB Ram). Fire avx2 version was clearly stronger than Fire bmi2 on my system. Against SF13bmi2 Fire always had a 2-4 point advantage! Against SF14avx2 in this blitz tournament Fire had an advantage. It seems SF14 has a learning algorithm and started having = results, then SF14 had a 2-3 point advantage over Fire in later tournaments. Many games were amazing and possibly the best chess ever I ever seen. Fire's playing level is at a rating of 3600+ overall and 3700+ in blitz.
At this time from my results Fire is the second strongest engine in the world. Quite possibly if 1000+ games were played (and adjusting Fire's options which I don't know how to do yet) Fire may tie or score better than SF14. I know for sure Fire is stronger than Komodo Dragon 2 and all other non SF14 based engine variations. I had the earlier versions Fire 8.1 and 8.11 play various Komodo versions in various time controls and Fire was always better. What was interesting in most of these recent games SF usually has a time advantage of sometimes 3-4 minutes, with Fire having less than a minute, sometimes even 30 seconds or less vs 3+ minutes for SF and Fire would win or draw! The wins were sometimes amazing! Also the opening play variety of Fire 8 for white or black is very impressive, instructive and entertaining. Fire has more opening variety and an amazing style of play at the ultra 3500+ level than of all other engines I've seen. It's seems like none of the engine rating sites have added these latest versions of Fire? It doesn't matter, if these guys tested Fire they know it blows all the other engines away and possibly affect sales for the commercial ones.
The main thing is when the Fire 8s came out I would rate them somewhere between SF9-11 depending on time controls. But with NN.MC3 and whatever other tweaking has been done, it jacked Fire up right there with SF14. These engines are playing stronger than Alpha Zero.
