    Excellent tips. I love the "no right or wrong" thing . Of course there are fast track learning curve tips and tricks that save some beard heartache but l love the whole experimenting thing. Regrets? Of course there's a few. If we consider it a journey as opposed to a destination, it makes it more fun too! Thank you for a great vid.

      Ya, I think that's the thing. There are so many guys out there who be in a better shape by just leaving the beard untouched and it's advice that I think is good. But that's the best advice for those guys who tend to be inpatient and and end up trimming after just a few weeks.
      Always appreciate your wise words Gray! Keep on growing!

    I empathize with you on the beard community several years ago. With my situation, going to the barbershop would have been awkward due to what was the norm was the very carved out look, which was what I did not want. Watching videos on this channel and beard board helped educate me. Ironically, I learned more about hair care with a bald head and full beard than when I had hair on my head and no beard.

    Hey Eric! I got to know this channel probably about a year ago, since I grow a beard. The things you talk about in this video are exactly the same that I have experienced. At first, I was too scared about trimming and shaving because I don't wanted to do something wrong, so I decided to search for help here on TH-cam and educated myself to a level where I was able to get the basics done by myself. I think the most important thing is to be patient and start slowly. The thing about trimming your beard at home is that you learn more about your beard growth and beards in general, so as you learn you are also getting more confident about having a beard. In a week or so I will shave mine off, because I finished my school here in Germany (Abitur) and I decided to shave it for some photos at the ball. But I think the whole development of my beard will be much easier and quicker this time because I know what I'm aiming for. I can only recommend everyone to try to get the best out of every stage of your beard growth! It takes longer to get a long beard, of course, but you also get to know what looks best on you and what you really want. Nice video and great advice, like always!

    Spot on. I shaved off my first yeard because it looked a mess and regretted it instantly. I’m now 6 months in to my second one and I get a tidy and shape up once a month. It might take me 2 years to grow a yeard. But I’m enjoying having a beard so much more this time round.

    Some brilliant advice which has helped me keep my beard through the tumultuous 6-7 weeks. Everywhere online says no trimming at all for the first 12-13 weeks...but as much as I like the idea of just leaving it for months, the reality is that it increases the likelihood of me having one too many bad beard days and just shaving due to the disproportionate growth rates/scraggly look. Instead I've found that if I have minor trims every other week it helps me stay commited and enjoy the beard NOW, instead of constantly holding out for the future and being frustrated with the current look. As long as I keep the trimming to a minimum - like a few mm here and there - it really helps make it looks more like a beard and fuller at these early stages.. The progress might be slower, but there's no rush really and I don't currently aspire for a huge bushy beard anyway.
    As for the 'stache though, I'm much preferring to leave that untrimmed. I think a longer, fuller moustache helps bring the different beard areas together nicely.

  • @matthewjarrod2523
    @matthewjarrod2523 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Trimming as I grow has been awesome, start out with a beard stash and go from there. I use clippers and I just keep going to the next number guard against the grain through 16mm. After that go to a size 9mm and trim with the grain. Maintain your cheek and neckline as you go and it will be a neat growing process, never really any Awkward stage.

  • @jorbarrie1
    @jorbarrie1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yay, someone who agrees with me! ;-) The first time I grew my beard longer I did what most videos tell you to do, which is to just let it grow without any trimming. But I hated the process; my beard is fairly curly so it looked a right mess all the time, and in the end I disliked it so much that I went right back to a short beard.
    This time round however, I'm trimming it as I go, so it looks good all the time. Yes, it takes longer, but, as you say, I can enjoy the process because my beard never looks awful. Definitely the way forward for me!

  • @boyo1991
    @boyo1991 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Couldn't agree more... Trims are important... They clean you up, and as long as you do it sparingly enough (maybe once every 2-3 months give or take your growing speed and how much your actually taking off) then your beard will continue to grow longer anyways! As long as you cut less than you have grown, it'll get bigger. And it'll be a bit longer to grow bigger but it's a much more enjoyable experience. Thanks Erik great vid

    • @Beardbrand
      @Beardbrand  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is the first time in 8 years of beard growth that I don't completely shave my beard when I make a mistake. All to often I would go too deep or jack up a line and just shave my 2 or 3 month beard. A month ago I trimmed my cheek line a little too low for my liking and I decided to work with what I had and I let the cheek hairs grow back move the cheek line back up. It takes time but in the long run it's better than starting all over.

  • @davidmunoz4022
    @davidmunoz4022 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I went for a 3 month handle-bar mustache, it was looking awesome, it was more of a beardstache, anyway late in May I decide it's going too out of control, I shave it of. Now I'm about one month in, being patient, I know my expectations. You gotta know how long it takes for your beard/stache to grow.

  • @brellynmuldoon8642
    @brellynmuldoon8642 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    My goal in the last year was to grow my beard to 10", the hardest part of this, is the waiting to see if the thickness will fill in as I keep the length at 10". Reason for 10"? Because the local comp/fundraisers are SO over saturated with beards 4"-8". Having the patience to let the beard grow in to the length is a huge challenge.

  • @madgoatking
    @madgoatking 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can see why some people want to trim while growing their beard as I am at 8 months and it takes more maintenance throughout the day to keep it looking good without trimming but I set out to hit 1 year minimum without touching it. Only trimming I've done is a MM or two off the ends of the stache to even it up and I shave the base of my neck about the width of a razor cartridge. It's now normal for me to always have my stache comb, beard comb and a tin of wax on me at all times and is second nature to me now to give my stache and beard a good brush through a few times a day.\

      Ya, that foam wall has been a bit of a pain in the ass. I actually covered up some of the worst white marks with foam padding, but ran out of it. Good idea about the black marker. Will have to try that instead. Those giant white area on the top right is from where stuff had fallen down. But I thought it looked pretty cool half up.

      I wish I was from where you are from. I had a fairly gnarly beardstache. I wanted to shape it a bit more on the ends, but was afraid to cut it. Today I went to a barber to get it trimmed and despite my decent communication he immediately took half an inch off of the middle of my stache! I don't think I will ever be able to trust a barber with my moustache again. He set me back 4 months! aaaahhhhhh

    Thanks for speaking about what it's like to actually have a beard. I've had my beard for 3 years now, never really trimming it or doing anything to it. I want to say it's at its terminal length now, and has been this way for the past 6 months. I still love it but a lot of people especially women have said my beard has "turned" and that I should trim it. I'm considering it because to be honest my beard is starting to separate into two beards and it's a little scraggly. If you've heard of the phenomenon on beards "turning" maybe you can make a video about it. Because I've heard it from multiple people and it's made me reconsider what it means to have a beard. My beard is a huge part of me and I've considered trimming or even shaving because of it.

      I think that grooming can help you fall back in love with your beard. I personally got the "french fork" with my beard around 14 months and it lost it's density and thickness. It was something that made me a little self conscious.

    Do you guys have any tips on how to discreetly encourage the man you're dating to start doing some self-grooming? He seems to have next-to-no interest in a nice hair cut or decent clothes. I love him, but gym shorts and graphic tees are kind of getting old :/ As is the mid-2000's skater boy hair. Should I encourage him to put in a little more effort, or is it a lost cause? I don't want him to change who he is, but I want him to see the potential to be a powerful, sexy, stylish guy!

    Thanks for all the tips.. Beard on

    I've been growing my beard for 12 months, it started filling in patchy areas and was growing good, the last 3 months nothing has happened. It's stopped growing and the patches are at a standstill. I'm still doing all the basics, biotin, healthy food, washing, beard oil. Any ideas how to kickstart my beard growth again. It's probably 1.5-2 inches when they're not curled

      +mastascorpio I'd say, start with the utility balm as it gives you more versatile as a conditioner. If your main concern is Styling, then do styling balm.

    Great video Eric!
    This goes the opposite of what your pal George Bruno recommends. I do see where you're coming from though.
    I've been growing mine for about 10 months now. I've had 2 barber trims in that time and I keep up,the fade to my close to shaved head on my own every few weeks. Could it be longer now? Sure, but I feel it looks better and is easier to manage and style...and I rarely get those moments where I want to shave the fucker right off 😀

    Hi I'll be joining a beard competition. Any tips? should I trim my beard or wait til after the competition before I trim it?

    • @Beardbrand
      @Beardbrand  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll want to trim any flyaways for the competition - but keep it long. You can use techniques like the tuck & roll to give a nice shaped beard.

    I've had a full beard that I haven't trimmed or done anything to after an 8 guard trimmer all one length.
    that was probably 9 months ago!
    my mustache is weak.
    my beard isn't full so you can see through it an visually see the outline of my face through it.
    there is also two hairless bits just under my lip that would never be filled in which effects the fullness of my beard compared to others
    my only appealing quality it the length which is is now just past my collar bone now an if I blow-dry it it straights out to almost mid pec.
    all the videos I see of people getting trim are with perfectly full beard an great big perfect mustaches. I feel like if I follow there

    Hi Eric,knowing that you take advice from your customers,would you like to make a couple of videos about patchy beards (I know you've made a couple of those explaining how everyone has patches,except fo carlo,obvioulsley). But I think that us,not so blessed guys,want to know how to deal with that ,expecially(and yep,this is my shelfish case) when we pantiently wait for a year to grow our face masculinity and we see ourselves with a "I'm long but I don't know what to do,and appear" beard,epecially,and this is also my case,when we ae planning to go for a full,long beard(at least 4 in. from the chin line). Waiting fo your future and awesome(I know this is what will happend)advices. if you may integrate these,my beard is also a curly mess.
    Now it's time for me to apologize for my "not so good" english,hoping you'll understand everything that i've asked to you.
    Waiting for an answer and for new videos from a fellow Italian customer.
    (Oh,almost forgetting,nice job,'till now.
