    The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.
    -Spock.
    Destroying an empire to win a war is no victory.
    -Worf quoting Kahless The Unforgettable.
    The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth, or historic truth, or personal truth. It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based.
    -Jean-Luc Picard.
    You will have nothing! ...Except my honor.
    -Gowron and Worf.
    In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in all of the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all of that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us. Don't destroy the one named Kirk.
    -Leonard McCoy.
    If anyone else has any quotes I'd like to hear them. I admit to having looked some mine up because I couldn't remember precisely how they went.

    18:15 The worst thing about that is that I can figure out a better version of this scene right now; when the intruder says the doctor can't hurt him because of the whole Hippocratic oath thing, the doctor says that whilst that is true, he also has the authority to forcibly sedate a patient if they are suffering from a condition such as schizophrenia which is causing them to display violent behaviour which the intruder is clearly suffering from right before the doctor sneaks behind on the dude and knocks him out with a hypospray

      Although honestly the quick removal of oxygen did the same thing and didnt harm him any further...plus if hegoes intangible to avoid being shit how could he carry a hypospray over

    Playing Devil's Advocate for the comic
    1) Even if Denobleans live long, it might be too much of a stretch that TWO super old doctors are both still around and able to help, especially since as far as I can tell Phlox is about 100 years older than McCoy.
    2) True we don't get much character stuff, but they wouldn't be very good doctors of in the midst of a medical emergency they were chatting about their personal lives.

    Doctors can sedate unruly patients who are a danger to themselves and others. Also, being sentient sometimes includes being able to re-write your programming and remove safeguards.

    To be fair, you could easily twist anything to fit the rather loose guidelines of the Hippocratic Oath when you consider that "do no harm" means that you can't really DO anything if taken literally. Anti-viruses are often made of weaker strains, not to mention the physical harm done during surgery. It's the rejection of doing harm for harm's sake, and even then combat medics have to harm or kill others in the process of saving the lives of themselves and their patients.
    Just off the top of my head, the Doctor could easily justify the venting as a means of quarantine. As you said we don't know how (or even IF) the mercenary was immune, and if he was an active carrier then allowing him to infect any more of the ship or going beyond their station would be a greater breach of that oath.

      As for the Hippocratic Oath thing at 18:08 or so, I guess if you're thinking logically, it IS a bit of a loophole that technically he ISN'T harming the guy, the shuttle bay being vented is what is harming him, but then again we could get into another Shrodinger's Cat level of arguments about whether he is still causing harm because he pressed the button here.

  • @AmaranthOriginal

    I always took Bones' attitude towards Spock's race as a deliberate attempt to provoke him, to get an emotional response out of him. Not so much being against Spock's race but being frustrated by the different level on which Spock functions (not necessarily better, just different). It seemed like a more extreme version of Kirk's friendly teasing, and often came from McCoy's deeply passionate personality. I mean, it's technically stillracism or xenophobia, but rooted in a lack of understanding. Which is weird, since it takes place hundreds of years after we started to learn about an accept neuroatypical individuals. Unless that's one of the things the future "fixed."

  • @VaderTheWhite
    @VaderTheWhite 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I do have a problem with the cover that I am surprised you didn't mention: the uniforms. Beverly, Bashir, and the Doctor are all wearing the First Contact-style uniforms (which remains my personal favorite with the Wrath of Khan uniforms at second favorite). That's fine considering the time frame of the comic. The problem is the coloration of Bashir's and the Doctor's uniforms. They are colored as if they were the early DS9/Voyager uniforms, both of which were commonly worn by the characters (with the Doctor wearing it throughout Voyager).

    Wow, you watched Enterprise until 'Dear Doctor'? I quit after 'The Andorian Incident' where Archer ratted out Vulcan, earth's allies, to their enemies because "spying is wrong." Garak was probably my second favorite character from DS9 and I wish he could have been around to give Archer his speech from "In the Pale Moonlite".

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +wdcain1 Oh, I watched until the end of the show - it's just Phlox stopped being my favorite character at that point. The series DOES get better at seasons 3/4, but man-oh-man did they have sticks up their asses for the first two seasons.

    • @wdcain1
      @wdcain1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall
      At least I know which seasons to get on DVD. Honestly, when the show first premiered, I was really taken aback by how mean spirited/racist most of the cast was. I actually thought this was the evil Mirror universe and when they mentioned the Temporal Cold War, I actually thought what would happen was that it would turn out that the Mirror Universe wasn't an evil alternate dimension but a corrupted timeline due to tempering with the past and making Earth more militarized/pirate'y.

    • @wdcain1
      @wdcain1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      Enterprise's problem wasn't a prequel. It's problem was that its characters were basically smug idiots who thought they were better than they actually were and until season 4, the show didn't really show any of the events leading to the Federation, content to just show these twits flying through space.
      At least.George Lucas had the common sense to focus on the important historical stuff in the Star Wars Prequels (mostly).

    • @markuscriticus8278
      @markuscriticus8278 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why?

    • @wdcain1
      @wdcain1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Markus Criticus
      Why Garak was my second favorite character? He's sly, cunning, manipulative, yet incredibly patriotic and even had a heart for family and even had a sweet crush on Tora Ziyal. While he lies constantly, there is an almost Loki-like earnest to how smooth he plays things. This helps him find success in most of his plots. This spymaster is awesome!

    Well, how do i put this, navy rescue swimmer's are permitted to nearly drown someone to subdue them for retrieval. Commercial pilots once upon a time were permitted to reduce the oxygen to the passenger area to knock out a panicking or hostile individual. So the EMH depriving the perp of oxygen to knock him out is not that farfetched.

    Just noticed on the re-watch, but oddly enough, the crew of the original Enterprise in the flashback? Instead of having Chekov next to Sulu, they have Lt. Arex, the three-legged alien who replaced Chekov for the Animated Series since the show was too cheap to hire Walter Koenig to voice his character. Weird. So you could argue this is a crossover of ALL six Star Trek series, animated and live action.

    I really like the fact that the doctor is always one of the main characters on star trek. It works nicely with the idea that all the STEM fields are deeply respected in the federation.
    That being said I do think it also has a lot to do with McCoy being part of the TOS trinity.
    As a side note I would rank my favourite doctors as
    1. McCoy
    2. EMH
    3. Crusher
    4. Bashir
    5. Phlox
    6. Pulaski
    I kinda think Bashir is more interesting than Crusher but I just have a lingering fondness for Crusher as TNG was a bigger part of my adolescence.
    I also gave up on Enterprise after the first season so can't judge Phlox that well. He seemed OK i just don't have much to say about him.
    Robert Picardo as the doctor (EMH) is probably my favourite part of Voyager. I think it was his performance that kept me watching. He is a very close second on my list.

  • @PuppyBeBad
    @PuppyBeBad 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I must now prove my nerdiness!
    The EMH proved he was capable of ignoring his programming when he purposely infected a rich bureaucrat of an alien hospital with a potentially fatal virus and told the man either he approve everyone for the cure or he will let the man die.
    It was one of his best episodes which showed the EMH is a real person capable of making morally gray decisions for "the greater good"
    Also with the sheer number of holograms that became sentient it was clear the Federation accidentally created a legitimate race of people.
    I like the theory that any program that is created to solve problems will inevitably become sentient if it gathers enough data. Star Trek seems to agree with this with all the episodes they have of machines becoming sentient and then having someone fight for that AIs rights... Although the characters never make the direct connection that all programs that are designed to solve problems could become real people and that they have effectively based their entire society off slavery.
    I like Mass Effect's interpretation of VIs. Programs not actually designed to solve problems on their own, preventing the program from actually thinking and becoming sentient. Programs like that need constant maintenance and someone to watch over them but they also are just machines with no risk of becoming a person. Therefore no slave army of AIs

    You know, when I first watched this episode, I haven't watch SFDebris and didn't know anything about Enterprise, so I thought that Dr. Phlox was a character that Linkara liked for a few seasons before a bad episode in season 3 ruined the character for him. Imagine my surprise when I found out that "Dear Doctor" was the thirteenth episode of season 1! The fact that Linkara kept watching a season and a half of television of a bad show with characters he hated really says something about his mental fortitude. I couldn't do it.

    Will you do the Star Trek - Doctor Who crossover comic? I stumbled upon it and kind of liked it.

    So, just being clear 1986- Voyage Home. 2060s- First Contact. Late 21st/Early 22nd century- Enterprise. 100 years later (Discovery maybe)- Original series. Give that a decade- other movies. 24th century- TNG. Concurrently to that the movies are happening. Then DS9-Voyager during that.

    UFO! ohhh so that's where the catchy 80's song that played in pretty much every Chilean kids showfrom the 90's comes from! also 10/10 on that really cool intro
    i have the feeling the story would have worked better if they segmented the cast into teams so you could have more one on one interactions between the doctors rather than the whole group at once doing not much

    I don't want to be "that guy", but I got to ask because with each passing week my anticipation continues to build. Are you still planning to continue the story this year, and if so when?
    I feel dirty asking a question about release dates like that....I think I'm in need of an extra hot shower.

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Mr.Northwind Yep! It's just the storyline is a bit more elaborate this time and involved with the writing, so I've been wanting to keep things on the downlow until I've got most of it done, though we're quickly reaching a point where that won't be feasible and I just have to do it. XD

    I have a question regarding the next review: When you look at Blackest Night, will you be looking at the core mini-series and the tie-ins, or just the core mini-series?

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Samuel Johnson Just the core mini-series. It's already a bit of a stretch for Patreon to review more than a single comic issue, but trying to review the ENTIRE event when I just finished up Blue-Skying? Yeah, that ain't happening. XD

    We all hate Insurrection mate.
    As to why they didn't contact the Federation, they're just stupid I guess. Reminds me of when they couldn't identify that water alcohol thing when TNG experienced it in identical circumstances to when OS did.

    If it was science fiction and before the 90s, more than likely I watched it as a kid. Everything from UFO to Space:1999. The Starlost to Quark. Blakes 7 to The Tripods. The Man From Atlantis to Starman. Otherworld to The Land of the Lost.
    But yeah, if you held me at gunpoint, I couldn't give you a quote from The Starlost either.

  • @DogoHalibar

    I liked the comic anyway, and I haven't in single, and it's included in my trade of Star Trek Volume 11. I do agree that Bashir and Crusher get the shaft, and the character interaction isn't the best, but I still enjoyed the story and let it inspire me with two additional ideas for fan-fics.

    • @lmaolmao5587
      @lmaolmao5587 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This thing is great for fan fic because it's such a good premise that could go so many ways and that would be even better if it was a longer story than this, so that you could make it long enough to have all of the characters shine.
