- 👉 Learn about the parts of a parabola. A parabola is the shape of the graph of a quadratic equation. A regular palabola is the parabola that is facing either up or down while an irregular parabola faces left or right. A quadratic equation is an equation whose highest exponent in the variable(s) is 2.
The parts of a parabola include: the axis of symmetry (the line passing through the vertex of the parabola to which the parabola is symmetric about), the vertex (the point at which the parabola turns), the domain (the set of possible x-values of the parabola, usually all real numbers for regular parabolas), the range (the possible y-values of the parabola which is usually the region above the vertex inclusive or below the vertex inclusive for regular parabolas), the x-intercepts (the points where the parabola cuts the x-axis) and the y-intercepts (the point(s) where the parabola cuts the y axis.

For anyone confused, here is another way
To start off, if it's in vertex form, you can just watch the end of the video, but if it's in standard form, then get the "a" and "b" from "ax^2+bx+c=y" and plug it inside the equation "-b/2a." Then that will get you the "x" point of the vertex, then all you have to do is plug the "x" inside the equation to find the "y". Then you're all set. if you are going to graph it, keep reading, this method is easy. Let's say the vertex is (-1,7), then once you plot it on the graph, find another "x" point, one that is larger than the "x" point of the vertex, and one that is smaller. Then you do the same thing and plug the "x" points into the formula to get the "y". Once that is done, plug them in and connect the dots!

Teacher you're complicating things thats bad for a student for me dont factor just do it simple with derivative or -b/2a thing
I understand by the content of this lesson was in Algebra 2 for completing the square, so using the derivative or -b/2a was not the purpose of the lesson but very useful
This is how we learned it in my algebra 2 class. For some reason it still confused me till I watched this video.
i think this thing is easier but most people hate completing the square but i like it for finding vertex form im in Algebra 1

im like so close to not even trying for my eoc cause covid screwed everything up and i literally cheated through school for the past year and a half. Theres no way i could ever learn through online school so R.I.P. dream job
i have to reteach all this bullshit to my kid whose done the same for the last year, and i'm wondering why i'm learning it having flashbacks from 15 years ago. Words problems are lame and uninteresting like throwing a marker for a friend to catch in how many seconds. Why not give me a vertex for how long I need to shoot my mortar shell to annihilate my enemy or how high will i go if i shoot myself out of a canon.
My school is using a teachers aide to show the class, and now they are all just listening to youtube in e-class. these teachers need to engage these students one on one in personal time to see if they are stuck, or where else are all my property taxes going but the teachers unions to continue enforcing low quality education that leads to students burning out, checking out, and parents getting frustrated, like me, going through the same motions as their kids, picking up the pieces and consulting free youtubeschool.

I tried so hard during the school year this year but he barely put in any effort as a teacher, which resulted in me falling behind and I ended up failing….

If you were confused at first like me and got a different Y; you're doing it wrong:
-x^2 Is really: -1(1)^2 [The 1 in parenthesis being the X value we found in this problem he presented]
Remember that a variable without anything in front of it is multiplied by 1.
So -x^2 is not positive 1 (the square of two negatives). It's -1 multiplied by 1^2, which equals negative 1. The solve the rest by plugging in the X value you found for the rest of the problem.
I was dumb and didn't account for the "multiplied by 1" situation.

Why wouldn’t you just do -(X-1)^2, then add the missing value which is 6? That will give you vertex without all of the other steps

This guy assumes people know all the terms and doesn’t explain the mistakes he writes and erases on the board. He just erases it and rewrites it. Making people scratch their heads. This “teacher” is the reason people don’t put effort into math and end up saying, “I’m just not good at Math.”

confused at 3:40, in another one of your videos, the b/2^2 term is added to the inside and the outside in order to balance this equation. this time you are multiplying the b/2^2 term by the coefficient... not sure which way is correct, can you help please? thanks for the video
since the parenthesis are being multiplied by a negative 1 I have to multiply the other term outside of the parenthesis by a negative 1 to keep the equation balanced ex 3(x+1) does not equal 3x+1 but 3(x+1)=3x+1(3)
i dont know if you actually check these comments still, but on one of your videos doing this you only subtracted from the end what you added in the middle (in this case the +1) but in this one you also subtracted it and then multiplied it at the end. i am so lost as to the difference in videos (both yours) if not for your videos there is no way I could be skimming through Algebra 1111 this summer and I thank you for all your time and effort for strangers like me crying themselves to sleep over math, but I am super lost on this one. I thought I had this mastered thanks to your other video and this one just undid that :/

Hey I have a question. For the vertex part you said to do the opposites. Isn’t it (1,-6) not (1,6)?....PLEASE respond I have an exam tomorrow.
no the formula is (x-h)^2+k or can be written as (x+(-h))^2+k so h is opposite only not k. (1,6) is correct

This example is not good because you're using 1. I would like to see one where you're squaring a different number to see what happens.

I've watched a few of your videos, and sometimes they're okay, but sometimes you do this thing where you drop an equation in there, and don't explain why, or what it does. Why do you divide b by two and then square it? is it always b/2^2? where did the -5 go? There's little explanation here. Just some food for thought.

If we are given three points through which the parabola passed then how to find out which one is vertex?

if we do -b/2a we get (1,8)
when you plug 1 in for x you get 6 so (1,6)
You get (1,6)
F(x)=-x^2+2x+5
When doing x=-b/2a when you input the variables it becomes ×=-2/2(-1) or x=-2/-2.
A negative times a negative is a positive so x=1
Inputing that into the equation you get f(x)=-1^2+2+5
f(x)=-1+2+5
f(x)=6
So (1,6) is the answer.
when you input 1 in f(x)=-1^2+2+5
the -1 will be squared and become +1
f(x)= 1+2+5
f(×)=8
(1,8)

the x-intercepts occur when y=0 so we replace f(x) or y with zero and then find the values of x that make that true. That help?
