  • If your mower no longer turns when steering the wheel, or just turns one direction, then you may need to replace the steering pinion and gear.

    I think the purpose of the alignment bolt is so you can line up the steering wheel to the steering gear without having to remove the wheel. Also a little heavy grease on the new gears (pinions and steering is usually recommended by the manufacturer. In fact I would have used grease rather than WD-40 as a lubricant. WD-40 is a decent penetrating oil but lacks in the lubricating department.

    • @saywhat6453

      WD 40 will just dry up quickly and disappear
      ...grease the pivot points...not the gear teefs...✌️

      So if your steering wheel inverted as the gear stripped, you are saying to turn to align it with the bolt before connecting?

    This was all quite helpful. When replacing mine, the pinion was absolutely frozen onto the steering shaft. Had to borrow a 2ton parts-puller from autozone to finally work it off. Turned an hour and a half job into a day and a half job. Hope I don't have to do this again anytime soon!!

  • @gordbaker896
    @gordbaker896 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Big mistake putting in the Plastic Bushing. Get the Brass Oil-lite type.The Pinion (small) gear can be inverted as the use area is not centred. Saves buying a new one. Sometimes you have to drill through that pinion gear. If you are handy, you can carefully cut unused sections of the old sector and weld it to the top of the sector in the wear area. Bring them a bit to the rear to allow for the angle of the Pinion. It helps a lot if you put the tractor on ramps.
    If you did it right you don't have to remove the steering wheel. Now grease kingpins (spindles).
    Great Video Sir.

    • @rstroud3279
      @rstroud3279 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you do because as the gear strips the steering wheel will be at some weird angle. You have to get the wheel back to the right position once you get the new gear on. Mine was inverted almost 180 degrees when it started stripping.

    Thanks for this video I really need it. Was mowing the back 40 and everything was going good for about an hour then all of a sudden it became harder to steer cause I would turn the wheel but it wasnt catching. So I inspected it as good as I can and the only part I was feeling not working right was with those exact pieces especially the star type piece on top of the other pieces. So now I can't finish mowing if I cant turn. Im not mechanically inclined but this was easy to figure out. Guess it wore down over the years and decided to shit the bed when I was mowing.

    Thank you for this video. It is very helpful. About the new parts. I looked at the Amazon non OEM parts, but comments stated that OEM is made of hardened metal, and Amazon non OEM are made of aluminum. Given the design of this steering system, aluminum is NOT the way to go because the steering gear and pinion are going to wear out extremely fast, and then you have to do the job all over again.
    Can you comment on how your non OEM Amazon parts have held up? Thanks.

    • @coryadams2054

      Now you see why grease or anti-seize on the shaft before putting the gear on is a good idea. Do this for wheels and anything that may need to be replaced in the future. To remove the gear, heat the gear only after spraying with penetrating oil, put the nut back on the shaft about 3\4 of the way and pound on the end of the shaft. May be useful to have another person pull up on the steering wheel at the same time. Couple of good whacks should do it.

The wheels looked straight when you did it, i just replaced steering plate, pinion gear, spindles and drag links, the tires were straight until i drove it, drove good but one tire was way out when i parked it, any suggestions on what caused that?
