🐶 WOOF WOOF! It's time for another review! This time, we're putting on our best Skull T-Shirt, loading up the night vision goggles and hunting the streets of New York, because we're looking at Garth Ennis's original Marvel Knights run of the Punisher! . Hope you guys enjoy this one, I enjoyed making it! Please give it a like, and subscribe if you're new! Comment below what you think of this run, and do ya boy a favour and share this where you can! I love doing these reviews, and have bigger plans than what I do already, so hopefully they gain some traction :) . Got another video planned for hopefully Friday, but until then, stay Mad, Doggs! WOOF WOOF!
Sorry to be offtopic but does any of you know a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Jakob Connor Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out now. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Ed Brubaker gave us the best modern Captain America but Mark Gruenwald is the writer who truly elevated Cap to his maximum potential. He is to Cap what Ennis is to Punisher
To me one of the most underrated part of Ennis’s punisher run is how much variety he packs into the stories while still feeling like the Punisher. He goes from Comedy, to superhero deconstruction, to action movie, to war comic. His villians all standout Barracuda being the highlight, ( and so beloved that most people consider him up there with Jigsaw). And ennis is still going with the punisher. He wrote a Marvel Zombie story with the punisher. He has wrote a video game, he wrote a cross over comic with paninkiller Jane. He manages to take Frank who in a lot of writers hands could be one note and plays that note to a t. Morrison once commented that they found boring Judge Dredd because they are one dimensional. But Ennis in contrast says judge Dredd is one dimensional but it’s the dilemma’s he’s faced with that make him multidimensional and ennis really has pushed Frank
Garth Ennis's Punisher was so good and definitive, that I actually find it a little difficult sometimes to go back and read Punisher comics before his run. I feel the same way about Frank Miller's Daredevil and Geoff Johns's Green Lantern.
What a wonderful, in-depth review. I also liked the more unscripted approach. Great job, Marcus. I’ve only read the Ma Gnucci story. Fun and violent and I really enjoyed it.
Thank you mate, appreciate the feedback too, it may take a few more videos to really warm into this style :) if you liked the first part, definitely try the rest of it, and let me know what you think! Thanks for watching the video mate! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
Just finished reading this myself. I got halfway through and then took a break for a month or so and came back to it and finished it off in a week. I agree with your comments about the overall plot. It's not the best and it really is only soap tying it all together. I did still really enjoy it though and I was surprised how funny it was, its very reminiscent of Preacher in that respect and a few others. Hi points: The Russian The Polar Bears Shoot out at the Duck pond Frank taking care of Wolverine
Nice review, could of mentioned punisher kills the marvel universe which is included in the Punisher marvel knights omnibus an part of Garth's run defiinitely worth at least a mention.
I appreciate you still checking it out, and hopefully it at least saved you some money if you don't fancy it haha! Always just trying make these reviews better and better, and you've supported them since the first one! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
I love that we're somehow working on the same wavelength. I had done a retrospective on Kraven's Last Hunt with Perch the other week. Looking forward to what you have to say on it! In terms of constructive criticism, I'm not entirely sure it applies to this run of Punisher, but it would be interesting in instances where you feel a story starts strong then meanders if you note if there was a change in editorial or not, things like that. Never hurts to talk about the inker (if applicable), colorist or letterer either, even if it's brief. And you talked about what lead up to this punisher run in terms of how the character was treated, so it would be nice if there was a quick acknowledgement of where the character goes after this run. All just stuff to keep in mind, not requirements or anything. I think you're getting better at all this in general, but definitely taking a more off the cuff approach to these retrospectives helps.
I'm filming it this week, so hopefully out next week :) I like those ideas mate, and may try incorporate a few, I just hope I don't read something that can taint my opinion haha! But hopefully the off cuff approach will improve, just glad you like it! Thanks for watching the video mate! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
Great review like you said it’s fun I feel Garth Ennis has two writing styles the really serious style like in his MAX series of TKO’s Sara or his raunchy style like the boys or preacher and I think he mastered his craft in the max series surrounding the punisher with interesting villains and having like a villain of the week type thing. I remember welcome back frank being the highest peak but there is some fun little arch’s I enjoy the Texas one and the wolverine arch were they fight midgets so random but the supporting characters is a nice different touch for a punisher run something I feel we don’t get anymore unless it’s a already established marvel hero. If you haven’t you have to watch the punisher vs Russian fight from the Thomas Jane movie it’s pretty accurate to the issue. If you ever read the MAX run it would be interesting to see how you think it compares Great review mate 🤘🏻stay safe
I still haven't checked out Sara! Is it one that needs to be on my list? :) Yeah, like it's a really enjoyable run, and there's no really bad part of it, the lowest was probably hidden, or whatever the bit in the subway station was 😂 but you're right, that Wolverine arc was trippy! They're definitely on the horizon, especially if they come with your recommendation! But honestly, this made me want to read Aaron's run again 😂 thanks for watching the video mate! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
Ok novice question. I have two of these punisher oversized hardbacks and really enjoyed this story. Do you know how i can continue it, or was that all of it? Thanks
Hmm, if memory serves there were three OHC of that part, but they're long out of print. The Marvel Knights run is 1-12, 1-37, not sure if it gives issue numbers on the back :)
I liked the Wolverine bit, but can admit it was goofy haha, you're right though, it never reaches the highs it originally hit! Thanks for watching the video mate! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
Frank castle is the most violent/homicidal and troubled character in comic book history! He shares PTSD like bruce Wayne yet he has not found some kind of self proclaimed peace! I can understand putting this "serial killer" to bed because let's face it,hes the most blanket character in denial, a "villain " is what castle truly is and hes so selfish/self centered, more troubled than the joker in my humble opinion 😎 I was very fascinated by castle but now trying to be a different man,I found that I can not get attached to the character like days of past. I enjoyed boaz yakin depiction of the character in the 1989 film because it showed castle hunted by a old friend who still wears the badge and desires castle to get help rather than incarceration.
I get why people might not like him, but sometimes it's just fun to switch off and enjoy the dumb aspect of it all :) the heart wants what it wants I guess haha. Thanks for watching the video mate! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
@@MaddoggComics I was very entertained by the marvels comic book character. Even enjoyed both seasons of the Netflix original series, just making much needed changes in my personal life is all😎
To be honest, even though I'm a Punisher fan, I don't like this run at all. I had previously read Ennis' fantastic MAX run, which is darker and more realistic, and I was really looking forward to get this Marvel Knights run to my hands. Unfortunately, Welcome Back Frank was such a disappointment that it took long time for me before I was ready and willing to continue the run. The humour in this book just doesn't work for me, neither does the unrealistic and ridiculous art of Steve Dillon. After saying this, I still think that Ennis is a great Punisher writer, right after Rucka and Edmondson, who are my favourites what comes to Punisher. I understand that I'm in minority, but this is neverthelessmy my honest opinion..
You’re not in the complete minority but I will say that I think marvel knights Punisher ( ennis himself agrees) really straches that comedy itch if you into want that style of comics. I think Knights isn’t trying to be Max and that’s why I really love Ennis’s Punisher for not trying to retread old ground
Unfortunately this is a pass for me. I like the character but in all honesty Steve Dillon's art is tied to Preacher for me and that's it. In anything else I've not enjoyed it
That's interesting to hear, I wonder if there's other creators in the same category 🤔 might make an interesting future video! Thanks for watching mate! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
Hard disagree. Marvel Knights Ennis Punisher was horrible. Mean-spirited, unfunny in every aspect, needlessly gross, Punisher is a one-dimensional stud and guesr characters like Wolverine or Spider-Man are written at their worst. Ennis corrected all these mistakes in MAX. He really locked in, it's crazy. We get dark humor and violence you can see coming miles away, Frank shines as a broken man who is never satisfied with bis warped idea of Justice.

@Lucian Frederick you are welcome xD
If it wasn’t for Garth Ennis Punisher’s purest essence wouldn’t exist. It would be like if Ed Brubaker never wrote Captain America.
Disagree. Captain America still has Steve englhart, Roger stern. Ennis fixed the punisher
Ed Brubaker gave us the best modern Captain America but Mark Gruenwald is the writer who truly elevated Cap to his maximum potential. He is to Cap what Ennis is to Punisher

That's an interesting way to look at it, I personally haven't read much before Ennis either 🤔 what's your favourite Punisher run since this? 🐶
@@MaddoggComics Definitely Jason Aaron's MAX run. It provided such a great ending to the character that I'd actually be fine stopping there.
What a wonderful, in-depth review. I also liked the more unscripted approach. Great job, Marcus. I’ve only read the Ma Gnucci story. Fun and violent and I really enjoyed it.

I heard so much about the best runs on the punisher. But Garth Ennis's run is a great pick to read.
For sure! I keep meaning to go back to MAX for a review, see how the full run of that compares :) thanks for watching the video mate!
