    • @koholos
      @koholos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There’s a number of alternatives that you can use that are less suspicious. It’s a variant of what’s known as the “magician’s choice” or the “force”, where you essentially make it look like the person has a free choice but they actually don’t.
      One of the simplest alternatives is to just have 2 envelopes, and keep one in your left pocket and one in your right pocket.

    • @AutPen38
      @AutPen38 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, while a naive person like me goes along with the trick thinking "That's clever", a small voice in my brain was asking "What sort of monster uses scissors to open an envelope?".
      The way to solve a lot of magic tricks is to to look for the "unnatural" bit, so obviously magicians spend countless hours trying to make their weird behaviour look as natural as possible. If the script was typed out, we'd spot the giveaway the moment we saw the line "He cuts the envelope open with scissors".

It was made in Adelaide, South Australia and screened nationally in Australia as well as in Europe, Asia and Australasia (14 countries and dubbed in German for Europe) from 1972-1990. Deane and Rob intentionally used everyday items around the house (like old rusty cans) so that people could repeat the demonstrations with materials they had to hand. In 1984 Curiosity Show won the Prix Jeunesse International, the world's top award for TV programs for young people. Ok, when you flip and catch the coin, make sure the coin is leaning on your thumb mussel. That allows you to flip the coin in your hand while you are in motion to slap it on the back of your other hand (takes a little practice ). The exact second the coin is in your hand, quickly glance at what side it is on, if it's heads then tails will show on the back of the other hand. If you want tails, flip the coin in your hand to heads and you will get tails. If you predicted heads and you see tails, you don't have to flip it.You can prepare envelopes in advance like two heads, and three tails, or whatever order you like, just don't forget the sequence. Let me know if you perfect it enough to try on someone.

      When you toss the coin and catch it, you can feel what side is facing up with the fingers on top, if it’s not the predicted one, you flip it like you suggested.
      Obviously this works better if you have a coin that is quite different on both sides, but with a bit of practice you can do it with any coin.
      This way you can ask the spectator what side they think it will be and make sure that is the outcome. I feel it’s better to have the spectator be right instead of you.

      It isn't, but it is. When it folded, three of us bought the assets and formed SciWorld, which continues its work as a mobile science education outfit, taking science to tens of thousands of students each year, especially in regional areas. I was its founding Chair and, after 11 years, have just stepped down, remaining on the boards as Deputy Chair. Deane is also a Board Member. Look us up sciworld.org.au and, better yet, book a visit - Rob

      Its actually you Rob! Huge fan. Love your work. Very good of you to be putting out these classic clips.Will check out the site. I think the subject matter you cover is important for developing minds and was certainly more so back in the earlier days when we relied on television to convey.

      Yes, that is the beauty of science. Technology may change but scientific principles don't, so things like a spectrum remain magic , generation after generation - Rob

    Neat trick with the words. While not as elegant, one could simply write "Dean Wins" and "Rob Wins on opposite ends of card, cut it in half, and throw away the false statement based on outcome of flip.

    • @davidwuhrer6704
      @davidwuhrer6704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want to cut off as little as possible. If you throw away half, that's suspicious. So make the word "winner" really big.

    von Neumann's Fair Coin Flip: Flip the coin twice...
    Heads+Tails = result is Tails. Tails+Heads = result is Heads
    Heads+Heads or Tails+Tails = discard both of the flips and try again.
    interestingly the trick presented in this video would still defeat it, BUT at least you'd know there was NO BIAS in the result from the coin or the coinflip itself.

    This could have been done with a two sided envelope. Where each end has a pocket containing the different answers. The two pockets are not connected. Cutting one side will reveal one note and not the other. In this way the cutting of the envelope would not be so obvious since the decision on where to cut become which end and the one paper inside the envelope will be the pocket that is open on the end that is cut.

    I thought this was going to be much simpler, by just doing the wobble toss… where the coin only appears to be flipping… and/or controlling the side up before reveal with the hand over hand reveal.
    Involving the paper, scissors, & envelope is way too much unneeded setup.

    There isn’t a way to win every time, but there is a way to stack the odds in your favour. There’s a higher probability that it will land opposite of the side up. So if tails is up at the start of the flip, it’s more likely to land on heads

    • @Skyfighter64
      @Skyfighter64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can win with my half dollar every time... as long as I'm the one flipping it.
      The heads side is smoother than the tails side. As long as they call it in midair, and I don't screw it up, I can control which side shows up, in a motion so smooth, it's almost impossible to catch, unless you know it's a trick in advance.
