I have noticed that when you start your engine, you move the key to run (1 o’clock) and then to start (2 o’clock). Then after starting you seem to return the key past run to the off position (12 o’clock). I have a Bukh DV20 too and I have always been told to keep the key in run and not dwell long in “off” with the engine running before turning to the kill position (11 o’clock) because it is bad for the alternator. Unless yours is a different installation and has a glow plug position perhaps. Also don’t leave the key in the kill position as it drains the battery through the shut down solenoid and eventually will burn the kill solenoid out. This all said, I am not a Bukh expert.
Holly, good job. You should look for a manual impact driver, a tool that lets you put a screwdriver bit in (like a phillips), and when struck, it applies a lot of force to the screw. Search "manual impact driver" at Amazon to see the tool. Also, you should use anti-seize compound when you put things back together so they will come apart much easier the next time. Love your videos, stay safe, happy travels.
Love those things! I've destroyed many of them while I was active duty in the Navy removing frozen screws on the access covers of submarines! (Also did a number on my hands, wear gloves). Lanolin also works were you would put antiseize.
@@WindHippieSailing If you do get one, don't forget to be aware of the brittleness of the underlying material (in particular fiberglass epoxy gel coat). You don't want to crack it up banging hard on the impact tool. You also might try heat, use hot air gun around the screw then ice to cool the screw, then firm taps with the impact tool. Also, a good supply of new screws in your most common sizes as you will destroy some getting them out. Anyway, best of luck to you, be safe.

Always lots of work on a boat for sure. You're very good at making things work. Sometimes or probably most of the time you can't run to the local store and buy what you need. But you make it work much respect. ⛵

No question, I just wanted to say that you seem really happy and that makes me happy to know that somebody else is able to live out their dream. I wish I was brave enough to vlog my travels like you do! Peace love
Hello from the Chesapeake! I have been watching occasionally for two years now. I was hooked after watching you bravely record yourself in a storm and these recent vids have been great. Thanks for the inspiration. Can you talk a little bit about your experience before the Pacific? Maybe generally about your travels in the Caribbean and East Coast? I also read an article that said you were in Antarctica?? Fair winds!!!
Another great video! I love how you show that you don't need a huge boat to live the cruiser life. I have my eye on a 28 footer. Stay safe and thanks for sharing your adventures
I bought flat semi-flexible solar panels from Lensun They are 50 watt each and I have 4 mounted with 2 still to mount. I have very light loads as you do: no refrig, no water maker .. just LED lights and radio. I attached them to the deck with Sikaflex-291. Love them. Good Luck
Yes. Then engine might have been easier or instead of the pin, undoing the nut at the end of the rod. It was screwed in flush with the end of the rod and you could have replaced it to the same depth. You are awesome. I envy your courage and adventurousness. Keep it up.
I love every other Monday! Paid off the car last week, now I'm debt free. Time to start shoveling money towards a boat!! Can't wait to follow in your footsteps, Holly!
While on the mooring you can just shift into gear and charge the battery. The boat will just have resistance. Just like being tied to a dock. Better to run engine under load. Great place you were at. Fair winds on the rest of the voyage
I thought about it, but in light of my not being able to replace the throttle easily here, I wanted to try for something I could recreate on anchor too
Because of you I bought a sailboat and today was my first day of sailing it I love you. n all my sailboat peeps. I'm trying to figure out a name for the boat 30 ft Erickson
Great vid, Holly (and Tish)! I am curious what (other) repairs, maintenance, and upgrades you plan to do/make after your crossing. Love these how-to videos, as well as the lovely scenery. Thanks for sharing your experiences! :)
Hello, I love your lifestyle, an exquisite mix of freedom, minimalism and adventure. I am 57 years old, I am saving every penny to buy a small sailboat !! what is your monthly budget ?? what is the minimum amount to live on a sailboat like yours?
Dear Holly. My questions: 1. how many spare material did you bring with you? 2. which sails did you bring and do you miss any? 3. How do you get your weather information? 4. What are your top five tips for circumnavigating on a Grinde. (My plan is to depart June 2022 with my Grinde from Holland). I love your technical video's, your video's of you sailing, love your spirit, love your drone footage too.
Well done Holly. On Halloween 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope is going to launch. Nothing is going to go wrong (not superstitious at all) but if something does go wrong, I know who we can send to fix it. Fair winds and following seas!
First, you are my biggest inspiration, I love your videos. My questions are: Where do you store your water/water collectors? And what would you say is the most important thing on the boat to check before you leave for a long trip?
Bad luck with the gear lever. There's a small grub screw right at the bottom of the lever, its hidden unless you put lever in reverse. Normally a small allen key will get it out. I had the misfortune to dismantle a morse control box after the detent button stopped working, there's only 3 or 4 moving bits inside and a small spring. The box itself was riveted shut and l had to drill them out then use nut and bolt to reassemble. Its a clever but easy to understand mechanism inside, just clean and pack with grease. On ours the spring had rusted to nothing but got another for pennies. The repair is much cheaper than cost of a new one. Loving your approach to sailing, wish l was there with you........
Really enjoyed this video! (Probably more than you enjoyed removing that pin)! You have come far Holly not only in miles but in experiences and learning too. For me at leSt it is a pleasure to be able to follow you on your circumnavigation! Are you planning a haulout somewhere to do the bottom and other things? Enjoy every minute of just where you are!
I was always taught that diesels don't like running under no load, ie neutral and to charge the batteries while in gear. Running in neutral can cause glazing. I used charge my batteries while moored securely with astern engaged. Never had a problems, except you use a bit more fuel. Any thoughts on this out there?
You remind me so much of the young lady who was my sailing instructor in Puerto Rico many years ago. I sorta feel like supporting you is like thanking her ... in some way. You are very innovative, self confident...and brave. Kudos. Question: Are the island and atolls you have visited suffering from rising sea levels?
In most setups it is the simplest thing to do, then just push the throttle lever on the engine :) but also many are spring-loaded and will reverse to idle, so something to hold it is needed.
Question for your Q&A. - How long have you lived on your sailboat? Have you sailed before you got your current boat, maybe when you were young? Would you recommend the lifestyle you are currently doing to others?
Watch all of her videos. She’s been on it for a couple years now. She’s sailed her whole life. She was born on her parents sailboat. They also did a circumnavigation. Then she worked on boats before this.
An easier way to release the gearcable is just to release the cable from the clamp (two inches in front of the mechanism) instead of disconnecting from the control. Then the whole gearwire will move, but as the gearcable-sock is no longer attached, the motor will run in neutral. A 10 sec job instead of 15 mins
Great video Holly, it's good to see you getting the job done. I don't know what access you have to your gearbox but I think you might find disconnecting that end a bit easier. Having said that, if you still haven't got that button unstuck you might be able to re route the cable so you can use it in the cockpit and make a handle so you can engage forward and saturn separately from the throttle. Vice grips are the best invention, well after the hammer. Hope you get it sorted. It would be interesting to know what blew your fuse, it might pay to look for chafed wires.🏴☠️
So I found the fuse problem was because I tried to wire in a tiny spare solar panel without realizing the limitations of my charge controller. The more you know!
Hiii Holly! I have a question/request: In the videos I have seen a lot of your cool boat Gecko, but your i'm curious about Jarne's boat..soo my question is could we have a boat tour on his boat (of course if he is up for it :)) keep up the videos and thanks !!

Hi captain or should I say machinist mate Holly! What better way to start a new week off than with the Gecko, beautiful scenery and your smiling face! You are a master at "improvise, adapt and overcome." If all else fails, break out the visegrip pliers, the PB Blaster and WD-40. As for questions, how old is the motor on your boat? I remember seeing it a while back when you were working on the starter (I think) and it looked older that me. Meanwhile, sail on captain, sail on! ⛵😊👍👍
I have many questions 🙈 it would be nice to know a bit more about you and your story. Also what have been the biggest challenges so far for you? Last one; do you ever get lonely. Loving your videos ❤️
Hi Holly, we are loving your videos and would like to know how long you are planning to travel through the islands? Do you have a plan to reach NZ before the cyclone season as most people seem to do or do you have other plans? Happy travels x
Thanks for all the wonderful videos you have made, Holly! Given that you spended parts of your childhood in the Arctic. How much of Norwegian, Icelandic or other languages did you learn then, and how much of it do you still remember? / Gunnar from Sweden (who once studied Icelandic at Uni)
Hi Holly you are super resourceful all you need is some duck tape! I am in the middle of refitting my 27’ Pacific Seacraft and have upgraded my solar panels, if you would like my old ones and a controller for free you are welcome to them. I have 2 80 watt panels and the controller. The only catch is they are on the West Coast of the US or Baja Mexico so you would have to figure out how to ship them. Ben S/V DAWN
Thanks for the offer!! Unfortunately right now it's impossible to get mail from the States to French Polynesia as the borders are closed :( I'm looking into ordering something from France in the hope that there's still a mail connection between the two
How far can you take Gecko? I'm curious about your 'decision trees', the what ifs given the state of Gecko and your onboard supplies to fix things? Peace, and best wishes.
I think the ring idea will prove to be better for you in the long run, and if you replace the linkage it will make that task easier for you. Sorry no questions for you, I offer best wishes and calm seas for your future

Thanks as always for your lovely comment! You never fail to make me smile. I'll definitely talk about my engine in next week's questions video!
When drilling metal, always use some lube, and low revs.
Nice 👍
Great video. Question? Are you happy with the length of chain you have?
5:20 : "Fast forward through this part, because it's not the important part."
Can't blame Yarna for apparently being of different opinion. 🤭
Holly you're scaring me all Blair Witchy like! ;~P
Could you have disconnected the throttle at the other end? Would it have had easier access?
TRUE SAILING no bullshit.
Unfortunately right now it's impossible to get mail from the States to French Polynesia as the borders are closed :( I'm looking into ordering something from France in the hope that there's still a mail connection between the two
Cheers Hippie 🥃👍
Cheers!
Why didn't you remove cable on transmission?
How far can you take Gecko? I'm curious about your 'decision trees', the what ifs given the state of Gecko and your onboard supplies to fix things? Peace, and best wishes.
Across the Pacific she went!
would have been easier to adjust throttle on engine ......ho well location looks so nice Brian in London
I think the ring idea will prove to be better for you in the long run, and if you replace the linkage it will make that task easier for you. Sorry no questions for you, I offer best wishes and calm seas for your future
