  • Can you bypass the pre-amp in a DAC? Is the pre-amp in the DAC as good as my pre-amp? Does it have a good volume control? Just a few questions I get regular so it was about time to answer them together with some other DAC related questions I get.

    Thank you so much for your continued work, diligence and thoroughness. I have come to regard your insight (and dry humour) as something reliable, something to guide my way amid the clamour of noise on the topic of hi-fi. Warm regards, Paul

    Very nice video explaining everything lucidly. I have a DAC which is non oversampling and uses a philips chip with a tube output stage and an analog volume control with a resistor/relay ladder - the AMR DP777. Even the spdif inputs appear to use a tube. It is a superb organic sounding DAC whose volume control beats a lot of very expensive standalone preamps. There are two analog inputs too which i use extensively and have two power anps connected directly to the DAC's outputs.

    Hi Hans,
    thank you for all the good videos.
    I have a question : Does a dac use the clock signal of the source if connected via i²s ?
    I heard different thungs about that, i use Directstream dac and Gustard ddc

    Dear Hans, do you have an intention to review the difference between multibit vs sigma-delta? I’ve noticed that there’s still many fans of TDA1541, is it still relevant?

      Any technology that is appreciated by a public is relevant. To me the ultimate digital to analog conversion can't be found in R-2R solutions but then you are talking rather high prices. In the more affordable range, R-2R and sigma-delta are both valid attempts to produce decent sound.

    Thanks for this video. A clear explanation to someone that isn’t an EE. I would be interested on a follow up video expanding on your thoughts around source material, for example CD and streaming, and the sampling rates of DACs. The numbers listed for the source and the DAC can be confusing. for example 44.1kHz for a CD and 192kHz for a Hi-Res stream and 384kHz/32 bit for a DAC. What do the numbers really mean in your experience? How does it affect the stereo sound you hear? In addition, how do the connections/inputs you use (RCA/XLR/TOSlink) between the source and preamp impact the sound you hear? I have a high-end system and sometimes I can tell a difference after a lot of critical listening but manufacturers advertise that higher numbers mean better sound so I’m expecting it to sound better which impacts my perception. Looking forward to your response. Thanks

    I appreciate your years of experience.
    To be completely honest. I’m often confused about dacs and clocks and various inputs. Not sure if I’ll fully understand it.
    I know this is a little off topic, but was curious. I have a Eversolo DMP A6 Master Edition. In your opinion, would I benefit from a good preamp and if so, what price range would show a reasonable advantage?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'n not sure I understand this part of your question: " what price range would show a reasonable advantage?"

    • @timmothymeir7445
      @timmothymeir7445 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Firstly, thanks for responding so quickly. I imagine you are a busy man.
      I guess I’m saying, how much would I need to spend on a separate preamp, or even a dac, that would give me a noticeable improvement in sound quality? I know this is an open ended question and there are a lot of variables. I just don’t know whether it’s reasonable to do those sort of upgrades.

    What about using the digital volume control of the streamer that goes to external dac and than to the integrated amp ( my dog eat the remote😢). Any theoretical effect on sound quality?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That depends on the equipment used and at the volume setting on the amp. Set the amp's volume to the loudest you want to play and - when using well designed equipment - you are not likely to hear a difference.

    Can you elaborate on why using XLR output from a DAC doesn’t sound better than RCA output into a preamp? I understand there is a 6 dB increase in gain from XLR output, but is there no other sonic benefit?

    • @Error2username
      @Error2username 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Some xlr have higher output than RCA, Xlr are better shielded against noise, thats about it. Short rca cabels are Great, just dont mix them together with your powercables.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      If I recall well I said in the video that you should not connect a single ended output to a balanced input. If you do that there is no 6 dB gain and you have to connect the negative to earth, effectively making the input single ended. Some people think this will be a better solution, but it's not. A balanced connection always has the double voltage since it is balanced and is less sensitive to interference.

  • @mikeconnell698
    @mikeconnell698 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Did I hear you say you don't think balanced XLR sounds better than single ended RCA?

  • @Miersemann
    @Miersemann 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Maybe I'm wrong, but in the block diagram the "analog in 1" and the "analog in 2" shouldn't go through the "RIAA amp".
