Indians and Chinese have more motivation to succeed because they don't live comfortable lives and have to find a nice job to change that. Americans are spoiled with a comfortable life with lots of options for career paths that they don't take academics as seriously.
Well... I do agree that Jay did not see many creative indians compared to americans is because the opportunities for indians in india are very less. But that does not mean that education in india is poor compared to US. There are hundreds of thousands of talented students coming out of indian colleges every year. If everybody is given the same opportunity like american students, then India will become the top country in no matter of time. you are totally right. though I live in America, I am foreign born student who recently moved from my country and I see students who has no worries about their future. my American friends have easy life, their parents pay their college fees or they take loans, but I work 35 hours a week take 16 credits, and still have higher GPA compared to them.

I did my undergrad from India and I went to grad school in US, I can say I would still graduate from grad school right after high school without even going to undergrad program that's how easy education here is, but at the same time research and practical experience is way better here than in India(I think that's what makes higher education better in US)

I accept one of Jay's points. Many Indians are creative. But the social system in India doesn't encourage creative people. In many cases, Indians are forced to do some jobs they don't like, to support their family. If an Indian shows a brilliant business or project idea and asks for loan, most of the time banks reject him.

The problem with the Indian education system in a nutshell: too much emphasis on rote-learning, too many coaching classes that teach students how to pass tests rather than think and process what they've learned. There are way too many automatons graduating in India. A fraction of bright and motivated students use the system to their advantage, but for the most part, a degree doesn't mean as much as it should.

I mean, look at USA's current President Elect. I think scientific literacy (or lack thereof) is a global problem. In the end, belief, anecdotes, stories, myths and legend generally trump scientific method in peoples' psyches. Ken Ham's creationist museum in Kentucky is run by a microbiology graduate... so believing in BS can clearly happen anywhere. I'd also have to disagree about this being why India produces few Nobel laureates: India's best minds usually leave the country because there's a fantastic dearth of funding for science in India. I am an Indian, was born and raised in India. well I think, we Indians are not good innovators,we lack innovation skills. we are more concerned about the conventional ways of education like getting a degree, and then getting a job. we are afraid to take risks, and this may be becuz we have limited resources or opportunities or and are burdened by responsibilities, so we prefer to take a safe route.Innovations require a kind of risk taking.you have to leave the safe path, and start your journey on a path that may not have been taken before. Most of the great innovators of modern day technology such as Steve jobs,Bill gates and others are Americans,they took risks, they put everything at stake and came up with things that no one had imagined.we have an education system which is good enough, but still needs to be improved. Yes we have billionaires like Ambanis, Tatas, Birlas..but they are not innovators, they are businessmen. On a global scale, Indians have proved themselves in almost every field, and its been just 67 years since we got our freedom, so we are doing good and can do better in the coming few decades. Well I am an Indian, I have done my Undergrads from India and doing my post from the UK. What I have seen in the two system is that, in India if you are studying a subject, it is done in more depth than in the UK(and I am studying in a Uni tht is ranked 73rd in the world). Plus back in India during my undergrad, since I was doing IT, we could be asked a question from anywhere relating to that subject(at least in my Uni), but in the UK it is limited to wat is done in the lectures.
i have never received reservations in my life becoz of being upper caste..but i want all the lower caste people to get reservation...becoz with the help form us and our govt poor people can also become the best ...dont be so selfish...we give free education to people who doesnt have money..what ever their caste is..upper or lower...its for good..one day we will end the reservations..but not now...
Indian education system is good for US companies as it supplies them highly skilled people for high tech and management jobs. But it is not aligned with India's political system, although things are improving now at a good pace.
They are mixing up two very different things... Education in India isn't any better than education in the US (I am Indian and have seen both sides), its the sheer number of students that DEPEND on getting a job. The US has a social security system, and a social payout system that allows unskilled labor to live comfortably. INDIA does not have that. For most of us, if we don't make the grade, we don't get the job. For every job in India, we have over 100,000 job seekers competing. This makes us study harder - we study to survive. It is also true that creativity and entrepreneurship were largely discouraged since they involve a fairly large amount of risk. The standard of living in India does not allow easy breaking into a new venture. Having said that, the situation has changed substantially in the last 6 years and we see people right out of college becoming job creators as opposed to job seekers. The nations in question have remarkable CULTURAL, POLITICAL and SOCIAL differences and comparison of young children and their levels of education is unfair.

Well I had my bachelors in india and masters in usa.The difference which I observed most was that the edu system in usa is very scientific and gives you lot of freedom.In india , you have to wriggle out of all the barriers.So in effect these things made indian students more sincere and when they come in USA they become more creative than they were in India.....So in a sense we had it in a hard way than our american friends, but nevertheless they were gracious enough to accept us :) ....
I am Indian. Very few American firms (Facebook, Google, Goldman) recruits raw talent from Top Universities (India or America). They want people who provide plug and play skills in a particular sector / technology, but trained by other companies. That is fundamentally non-meritocratic. Which is why they prefer Infosys 2 years experienced professional over IIT or MIT grad.

I am an Indian, doing my grad studies in the US, and working for a software company. So I have seen both the education systems. India is in NO WAY inferior in education system to the US. Applying what you study is very different from studying. The quality of an engineer is in application, and the quality comes with experience rather than reading journals and books. Indian education system is far ahead of the league as far as the quality of math and cognitive skills development is concerned.

I`m in class 12 and students who choose humanities and commerce are considered inferior than those who take science.And also"NO PLACE FOR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES"-No sports,no dance/music. Indian Education System in my view point is the world's best education system. The only flaw i see is the kind of pressure the system puts on the students in the higher secondary level when it comes to entrance examinations for their professional studies. To some extent our education system also doesn't give importance to the student's ability to think and the students are not trained to develop their tastes and skills of interest. I hope these would soon be rectified too. On the other hand lifestyle also plays a very important role. Indian parents give very much importance for their children's education, while i dont think parents outside doesn't take this as important as Indians do. The Indian parents take strain in sitting with the children to teach them which the other parents dont do because of the kind of system that prevails there or so. A student who has studied in India would find it really very easy to adapt to the education system of other countries as they are trained here in that way and would find it rather easy. But some one who studied outside India would find it difficult to follow the system here, because they are not trained to adapt to the different education systems. In ancient times, India had the Gurukula system of education in which anyone who wished to study went to a teacher's (Guru) house and requested to be taught. If accepted as a student by the guru, he would then stay at the guru's place and help in all activities at home. This not only created a strong tie between the teacher and the student, but also taught the student everything about running a house. The guru taught everything the child wanted to learn, from Sanskrit to the holy scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics. The student stayed as long as he/she wished or until the guru felt that he had taught everything he could teach. All learning was closely linked to nature and to life, and not confined to memorizing some information. The modern school system was brought to India, including the English language, originally by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay in the 1830s. I think American families should practice discipline. that will help the kids there to not drift away from focussing on what they are good at. currently India is facing the problem of kids underperforming due to increasing over-liberal thinking. i think technology and luxury are main enemies but we cant shake them off... oh well. I have been a teacher in India and after coming here,I have seen my son's curriculum in America.....what I realised is Indian system of education is more "learning by heart"...or as we say 'by hearting everything" ,as the tension and competition of exams takes away the fun or curiosity of learning......American system involves,critical thinking....I wish there was a system that involved combination of both.....I see that change started in few schools in India...

Being an Indian I go with Jay though, the Indian education does not encourage creativity as compared to American. Why it has become so difficult to find skilled labour, it's certainly the advance of technology that has made them lazy not not to strive hard enough than before(the transistor revolution , Internet )and also many americans are striving towards entertainment stream for their career. Pointless argument, they both kinda right. Not everyone is creative(this goes for both the countries). Im studying in an Indian college. Some of my classmates cant even write a single leave letter(even by googling), and some of them are real talented in their own way. We have top colleges in some cities and some crap colleges somewhere else(in terms of innovative teaching, using the right tech, etc). We have a national culture where people are attracted towards grade and raking system instead of real knowledge and researches, but hey, its not for all of them. This answers why some Indians are creative (they see the value of knowing and interested in learning more) Since some creative people end up working in the US doesnt mean Indian engineers are top notch. The only difference I feel about the education system of two countries is that US students can be upfront and question everything they want to know, but in India, students are supposed to follow their teachers not asking why or asking too much questions(arguing with a teacher ends up in disobedience, not respecting, etc.) Thanks to the internet, it helps the introverts ! I am an American who has studied higher education in the US and India (earned a master's degree in an Indian college). There are merits and demerits to both educational system. No system is perfect. There are arguments that even the US system stifles creativity. Schools and colleges train people to be workers and OBEY a boss. The type of creative they talk about is entrepreneurship. There is merit in saying that true entrepreneurs get their creativity sucked out of them in college. Why did Bill Gates drop out of Harvard? There are different types of creativity. They did not have enough time to go into specifics.

It all comes down to the human factor , if the student has decent aspirations he can excel even if he is from a third rate university or school in a third rate country . But one thing is for sure General Education in India is far better than that in America . And now many schools in India are catching up with the "American Model" of education of having project work and specializations etc . Which in my time was not there . General Education is the foundation to a better world view . And it is not so bad a person can adapt quite easily to specialized study environments . Primary has always to be general education . All said and done it is the individual that matters and his attitude to studies , nothing else .Centres of excellence exist in every country , they are the exceptions and not the rule . Harvard, MIT, Stanford etc are among the best , but not everyone gets in , and not every successful person who has schooling has necessarily gone to a centre of excellence. In later life it is acumen and application of what one has learnt that matters .

well i am an Indian and i am doing my syjc , i have seen the american curriculum for physics , I am learning about things like nuclear fission and fusion , dual nature of matter , semiconductor electronics , atoms and communication systems , with all the electricity and magnetism that american curriculum is teaching . 5 more chapter and some of them are so radically different from each other , it helps us get insights into what will come in the future and what we have interest in so that we can choose the appropriate field
India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35 so if you have so much competition to survive you try to get good education to earn bread and butter there is no comparison in us and Indian education how much of your population is under 25 so even our education sucks we know how to get job

i read a book called "Rethinking America", written in the 90's ... it spoke about the differences between the edu system in Japan, US & Germany..accdg to the book, in Japan, the younger grades K-3 encourage the children to be engaged freely during that time w little rote memorization while in the US, engagement is not encouraged... US schools certainly did NOT encourage engagement for my children, i think this is changing but, it's something 4 educators to continue to consider

I am a neutral third party. I'm from Europe, I've lived in India for 10 years where I studied up to the 10th grade. Finished high school back home, and am now in college in the US. Certainly, an IIT-JEE education is excellent - I have known several alumni and they are all great people. However, I would still prefer studying in the States - by far. I can't speak on behalf of the U.S as I never studied there & not in India either. The fact India produces more engineers - duh! it's because of their massive population? And most parents usually want their kid to be either an 'engineer' or a 'doctor'. That's really frustrating! But it's interesting that the U.S still produces top level talent, innovation and entrepreneurs, mostly I think it's because the way culture and education both encourage creative thinking.

Indians and Chinese have more motivation to succeed because they don't live comfortable lives and have to find a nice job to change that. Americans are spoiled with a comfortable life with lots of options for career paths that they don't take academics as seriously.

you are totally right. though I live in America, I am foreign born student who recently moved from my country and I see students who has no worries about their future. my American friends have easy life, their parents pay their college fees or they take loans, but I work 35 hours a week take 16 credits, and still have higher GPA compared to them.

I did my undergrad from India and I went to grad school in US, I can say I would still graduate from grad school right after high school without even going to undergrad program that's how easy education here is, but at the same time research and practical experience is way better here than in India(I think that's what makes higher education better in US)

I accept one of Jay's points. Many Indians are creative. But the social system in India doesn't encourage creative people. In many cases, Indians are forced to do some jobs they don't like, to support their family. If an Indian shows a brilliant business or project idea and asks for loan, most of the time banks reject him.

The problem with the Indian education system in a nutshell: too much emphasis on rote-learning, too many coaching classes that teach students how to pass tests rather than think and process what they've learned. There are way too many automatons graduating in India. A fraction of bright and motivated students use the system to their advantage, but for the most part, a degree doesn't mean as much as it should.

In the end, belief, anecdotes, stories, myths and legend generally trump scientific method in peoples' psyches. Well I am an Indian, I have done my Undergrads from India and doing my post from the UK. What I have seen in the two system is that, in India if you are studying a subject, it is done in more depth than in the UK(and I am studying in a Uni tht is ranked 73rd in the world). Plus back in India during my undergrad, since I was doing IT, we could be asked a question from anywhere relating to that subject(at least in my Uni), but in the UK it is limited to wat is done in the lectures.

They are mixing up two very different things... Education in India isn't any better than education in the US (I am Indian and have seen both sides), its the sheer number of students that DEPEND on getting a job. The US has a social security system, and a social payout system that allows unskilled labor to live comfortably. INDIA does not have that. For most of us, if we don't make the grade, we don't get the job. For every job in India, we have over 100,000 job seekers competing. This makes us study harder - we study to survive.
It is also true that creativity and entrepreneurship were largely discouraged since they involve a fairly large amount of risk. The standard of living in India does not allow easy breaking into a new venture. Having said that, the situation has changed substantially in the last 6 years and we see people right out of college becoming job creators as opposed to job seekers.
The nations in question have remarkable CULTURAL, POLITICAL and SOCIAL differences and comparison of young children and their levels of education is unfair.

Well I had my bachelors in india and masters in usa.The difference which I observed most was that the edu system in usa is very scientific and gives you lot of freedom.In india , you have to wriggle out of all the barriers.So in effect these things made indian students more sincere and when they come in USA they become more creative than they were in India.....So in a sense we had it in a hard way than our american friends, but nevertheless they were gracious enough to accept us :) ....

I am an Indian, doing my grad studies in the US, and working for a software company. So I have seen both the education systems. India is in NO WAY inferior in education system to the US. Applying what you study is very different from studying. The quality of an engineer is in application, and the quality comes with experience rather than reading journals and books. Indian education system is far ahead of the league as far as the quality of math and cognitive skills development is concerned.
People like Jay exist in every country and these are the sort of people who stops the growth of a country by simply being stubborn in denying the facts. They live with the dream of 'I am the perfect' , 'I am the greatest' , 'I don't need to learn anymore'
The fact is that all good students of India and China want to go to the American Universities.
We should serve our country and make it grow instead of growing a foreign country. We may go there to get modern education if we want and ultimately should grow our nation. We owe this much to our beautiful country. I cleared competitive xms to practice in a foreign country and serve their people, but I got enlightenment and stayed here and serving my people. I am proud

Indian Education System in my view point is the world's best education system. The only flaw i see is the kind of pressure the system puts on the students in the higher secondary level when it comes to entrance examinations for their professional studies. To some extent our education system also doesn't give importance to the student's ability to think and the students are not trained to develop their tastes and skills of interest. I hope these would soon be rectified too. On the other hand lifestyle also plays a very important role. Indian parents give very much importance for their children's education, while i dont think parents outside doesn't take this as important as Indians do. The Indian parents take strain in sitting with the children to teach them which the other parents dont do because of the kind of system that prevails there or so. A student who has studied in India would find it really very easy to adapt to the education system of other countries as they are trained here in that way and would find it rather easy. But some one who studied outside India would find it difficult to follow the system here, because they are not trained to adapt to the different education systems.
In ancient times, India had the Gurukula system of education in which anyone who wished to study went to a teacher's (Guru) house and requested to be taught. If accepted as a student by the guru, he would then stay at the guru's place and help in all activities at home. This not only created a strong tie between the teacher and the student, but also taught the student everything about running a house. The guru taught everything the child wanted to learn, from Sanskrit to the holy scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics. I have been a teacher in India and after coming here,I have seen my son's curriculum in America.....what I realised is Indian system of education is more "learning by heart"...or as we say 'by hearting everything" ,as the tension and competition of exams takes away the fun or curiosity of learning......American system involves,critical thinking....I wish there was a system that involved combination of both.....I see that change started in few schools in India...

I think even though Jay does not have much of a point here, but still the American education has been superior right from 1st grade. Being an Indian I go with Jay though, the Indian education does not encourage creativity as compared to American. Why it has become so difficult to find skilled labour, it's certainly the advance of technology that has made them lazy not not to strive hard enough than before(the transistor revolution , Internet )and also many americans are striving towards entertainment stream for their career. Indians do jobs not out of interest or curosity but for money which I hate myself. Any moron can build creative skills if it strives on the job via persiverance. If won't find any Indian doing expiriments or going out on a venture totally on its own curosity which is pretty much necessary to start a company.

Not everyone is creative(this goes for both the countries). Im studying in an Indian college. Some of my classmates cant even write a single leave letter(even by googling), and some of them are real talented in their own way. We have top colleges in some cities and some crap colleges somewhere else(in terms of innovative teaching, using the right tech, etc).
We have a national culture where people are attracted towards grade and raking system instead of real knowledge and researches, but hey, its not for all of them. This answers why some Indians are creative (they see the value of knowing and interested in learning more)
Since some creative people end up working in the US doesnt mean Indian engineers are top notch. The only difference I feel about the education system of two countries is that US students can be upfront and question everything they want to know, but in India, students are supposed to follow their teachers not asking why or asking too much questions(arguing with a teacher ends up in disobedience, not respecting, etc.) Thanks to the internet, it helps the introverts !

I am an American who has studied higher education in the US and India (earned a master's degree in an Indian college). There are merits and demerits to both educational system. No system is perfect. There are arguments that even the US system stifles creativity. Schools and colleges train people to be workers and OBEY a boss. The type of creative they talk about is entrepreneurship. There is merit in saying that true entrepreneurs get their creativity sucked out of them in college. Why did Bill Gates drop out of Harvard? There are different types of creativity. They did not have enough time to go into specifics.

It all comes down to the human factor , if the student has decent aspirations he can excel even if he is from a third rate university or school in a third rate country . But one thing is for sure General Education in India is far better than that in America . And now many schools in India are catching up with the "American Model" of education of having project work and specializations etc . Which in my time was not there . General Education is the foundation to a better world view . And it is not so bad a person can adapt quite easily to specialized study environments . Primary has always to be general education . All said and done it is the individual that matters and his attitude to studies , nothing else .Centres of excellence exist in every country , they are the exceptions and not the rule . Harvard, MIT, Stanford etc are among the best , but not everyone gets in , and not every successful person who has schooling has necessarily gone to a centre of excellence. In later life it is acumen and application of what one has learnt that matters .

well i am an Indian and i am doing my syjc , i have seen the american curriculum for physics , I am learning about things like nuclear fission and fusion , dual nature of matter , semiconductor electronics , atoms and communication systems , with all the electricity and magnetism that american curriculum is teaching . 5 more chapter and some of them are so radically different from each other , it helps us get insights into what will come in the future and what we have interest in so that we can choose the appropriate field

i read a book called "Rethinking America", written in the 90's ... it spoke about the differences between the edu system in Japan, US & Germany..accdg to the book, in Japan, the younger grades K-3 encourage the children to be engaged freely during that time w little rote memorization while in the US, engagement is not encouraged... US schools certainly did NOT encourage engagement for my children, i think this is changing but, it's something 4 educators to continue to consider

I am a neutral third party. I'm from Europe, I've lived in India for 10 years where I studied up to the 10th grade. Finished high school back home, and am now in college in the US. Certainly, an IIT-JEE education is excellent - I have known several alumni and they are all great people. However, I would still prefer studying in the States - by far. I can't speak on behalf of the U.S as I never studied there & not in India either. The fact India produces more engineers - duh! it's because of their massive population? And most parents usually want their kid to be either an 'engineer' or a 'doctor'. That's really frustrating! But it's interesting that the U.S still produces top level talent, innovation and entrepreneurs, mostly I think it's because the way culture and education both encourage creative thinking.
