Really glad you pointed out that what most people call the charger is only a charge point. Most TH-cam reviewers and the media still make the mistake and call them chargers. Great channel by the way.

On my first bev back in 2018 (featured on my own channel 😊) the nissan leaf whilst being used as a taxi I got the 1st home charger for free as an incentive 😂 so it cost nothing from day one. We moved and then had a zappi installed (during the pandemic there was no point in taxi's so I worked as a home delivery driver for 2 years) and during that time our 4kW solar array (free with the new home) charged the leaf for nothing so that £900 install paid for itself in that time so again NO costs 😊. On a side note even if we didn't have solar as a taxi it would pay for itself in under 15 weeks! In fossil fuel costs! Cheers mate

Mine paid for itself instantly. I put a value on utility to me. The utility of the convenience of a home chargepoint was enough to cover the circa £1200 it cost in total to get installed.

My zappi has been on the outside of my house for the last 4 years and even with such wet summer still been running mainly on solar so estimate 1p per mile. All new houses should have solar panels fitted as standard.

We've had our Kona EV & Zappi charger just over 18 months now & we're on Octopus Intelligent Go with a cheap rate of £0.07p/kWh for 6hrs a night + saver sessions when notified during the day / evening.
The Kona gets used as our daily local driver by both of us (my wife is the main driver) & does about 6-7k per year. My petrol estate car annual mileage has now dropped to 3k per year & only gets used now for longer trips, holidays, trips to the dump, Ikea etc. The home charger has easily paid for itself with the fuel saving on both my wife's old ICE car & my existing car & we haven't used a public charger yet.
We got our charger installed for 0% VAT because it was installed at the same time as our solar & battery system.

That's why there are hardly any EV owners who can't charge at home.
You can neither take advantage of the convenience, cheaper cost and reliability.
With Zapp map saying avg public charging is 55p kwh, any car getting 45+ mpg doesn't make any significant savings (if you can't home charge)

Having just got solar and a battery, I also had a car charger put in. We then bought a second car as a runaround, my wife loves it, and we are using it for just about everything, the saving are as you say great. It’s actually made me think if your are thinking of going solar, I’d actually say if your are looking for a second or replacement car and you car live with electric then get an EV get a home charger (if your are looking can) then go onto a cheap overnight and then not only will you save on fuel, put all your dishwasher, washing machine etc etc on during that period and save even more!

Jim, it is also perhaps remembering that an EV home charger will add around £1k to your home's value, according to an estate agent I spoke to a few Months ago. They are now beginning to be seen as a desirable feature by some house hunters.

Thanks, for someone doing say 7500 miles, you can easily manage just with the granny charger, yes, I know not recommended but many do use it, you can easily put 40-50 miles on in just the 6 hour night slot.
In theory you do need an EV to get on the best tariffs with Octopus and definitely if you want Intelligent as you have to do a test charge.
Ohme is very easy to use, and as you say it plays nicely with Octopus, and does not cause 12v battery problems with the car.

my home charger as I bundled it with a battery install cost around 800 and thats like you mentioned the Ohme. and I have spent just 61 quid to get 3500 miles of driving ... I reckon for me as vast majority is home charging I will get pay back before I have to give the car back on it's lease (i only do 6k a year) . I am on ocoiopus agile which means I generally charge sometimes with negative pricing which brings it roughly same as IOG

For us, octopus go is ok with a granny charger 8.5p, charger came with the car, use a simple 13amp smart timer plug (before people comment the granny charger is limited to 10 amps), get 10kWh per night(85p) which is a day range of 35+ miles. We leave the car plugged in and when octopus says free energy I turn the plug on via the app, put the washing machine on, emerssion heater and have a shower our record is 10kWh free :)

It is interesting and would definitely make the jump to electric if infrastructure improves a little bit more. I would definately look closely at Kia and Hyundai electrics because I think they have really thought about what customers want from an electric of varying financial and family freedoms and restrictions to cater for a huge chunk of the electric market

Just another point I know Tesla don't need servicing but traditional car manufacturers still make you follow a service plan and if you don't you void the warranty and they are not much cheaper that a ice car. It a great big con. In the four services my Kona has had the only change of anything was the coolant in the battery system all the over service items is just visual checks
Lucky the service in the lease.

You could take your charger with you if you move, although according to one estate agent I spoke to, said an EV charger adds roughly £1k to the value of your property, so it might be worth leaving your existing charger in place, and getting a new one for the new property, This will of course come with a new warranty.....

I looked into octopus but they wanted to charge 8 1/2p so stayed with British Gas at 7.8p. I am the same wouldn't have a ev without a wall charger. I went a bit further this year and got solar and batteries, so now the most I pay per kw is 7.8p. The batteries are 12kw so if there is no sun the batteries will run the house for 24 hours and they are at 12 till 5 with the car. And when the sun comes i export for 15.1p I t should pay for it self into 7 to 8 years.

Now include EV depreciation in your calculations. My next door neighbour bought only a second hand Jaguar I pace 19 reg car. The value of his EV has depreciated £10'000 or so in much less than 10 months on Auto Trader. How can any savings be made, with electricity at any price with depreciation of that enormity against an ice car and that is only a second hand EV, a new or newer one would be worse.
