  • I love experimenting with my gel plate and when Cricut asked to do a sponsored collaboration I couldn't resist trying this out of the box technique. I had resisted buying a Cricut machine because I don't scrapbook anymore or do cards. However, finding ways to use the Cricut Explore Air for mixed media techniques was amazing. I hope you enjoy it!

    So you got a Cricut and you sound so happy with how versatile it can be. Maybe, one of these days I’ll get one. Don’t know which I want more- a good quality laser printer or a Cricut. I’d probably get more use with the Cricut because of the ideas you put out there. Decisions decisions. Thanks for another excellent video filled with loads of information and creativity. I do love all you share with us, Keren. You have been a wealth of information and inspiration. Thanks, friend.

    Dear Keren, you are so inventive! I have a cricut machine which I used a lot when I first bought it. Now I will be able to give it a new life. Making stencils out of thin card would mean that you can use the torn pieces over again and the layers of thin acrylic paint would tend to strengthen them. Thank you for sharing. Carol UK.

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh good to hear Gillian that I can monoprint before cutting. What do you mean by ball of foil? can you explain. thanks so much!!

    • @MixdJuxt
      @MixdJuxt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KerenTamir sure. When I clean my blade, instead of just brushing it off with a dry brush or blowing away the fibers, I stab it into a ball of foil. Helps to remove adhesives too. I have been doing this with my designated for paper only blade for about 3 years or so.
      I have a CB09 blade for vinyl only. And a newer ratchet blade for various materials.

      I can't help you in that respect but I know that 20 years ago I had an old cricut which I used with cartriges then I bought the sillhouette and I found it complicated to use. I know that once the cameo came out it was way easier. My friend has one and she loves it. I was worried it would be complicated to use the Cricut machine but it took me exactly 5 mins to learn. Its so easy lol. I don't know why I didn't get it earlier. I used it for the last 4 projects LOL

    This is great, Keren. I recently got a gel plate and am already addicted! I am learning a lot of new techniques. Lots of thin layers of paint seem to be the answer for a really interesting look, and I love what you've done with the Cricut patterns. I have a Cougar cutting machine and have recently designed a load of stencils and masks which are now on my OneDrive for free download. I cut mine from Tyvek. Are the Cricut Design Space patterns available if you don't have an actual Cricut machine?
    I have also just discovered using a cheap plastic bathmat to create gorgeous texture on the gel plate, and last week I ordered some sink mats which I am also going to try - they come in lots of different patterns.

      so glad to hear! they are so fun to use and you can create amazing backgrounds and designs! You can use any die cutting machine to create the masks

      yes you can send things directly from your ipad or even your iphone. If you do decide to buy it directly from cricut, I'd love for you to press on my link below this video as it lets them know that I sent you. You can see more mixed media techniques with Cricut in this playlist: bit.ly/3LtvN8l

    Hi Karen, may I ask you, why you waited 6 hours before peel off the page from the gel plate?

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it doesn't have to be 6 hours, It just has to be fully dry and its hard to tell wether or not its dry. You can touch the top and if it doesn't feel cooler to the touch then its dry but its hard for me to tell sometimes and I've lifted it too early before and ruined the design. So I just left it to dry and went to do other things (like boring chores and cooking) so that way I didn't have to worry its not dry. Drying time depends on humidity too. The reason you need it dry is because the last layer of paint gets stuck to all the other layers and helps it peel of the gel plate like glue.

      Khursheed thank you so much. Cricut is a brand in the US that designs Machines that basically cut and print anything like die-cuts of any shape and size. Depending on the machine you can cut, paper, fabric, vinyl, chipboard in any shape and use it in your crafts.

    Do you have to dry each colour before you start the next one, or just do the drying at the end?

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you don't have to dry each color as the layers are so thing they dry quickly anyways. and if the paint mixes it just looks more distressed so either way you're good. the paint layers will be dry by the time you apply the final coat. that's the only one you have to let dry for awhile.

      I understand, it is definitely an investment. You can do the same thing with pattern dies if that's what you have. or with regular stencils but not cutting them, just painting through them. thanks so much for watching!

    I have so many doubts about gel printing… Do you let dry every single layer? How long?

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sonia it depends you can pull a layer right away or you can let it dry like you've seen it done in my videos. I would suggest you watching some of my older monoprinting videos. I have a playlist that might help you: th-cam.com/play/PLHqYBGhCa1OCt5D0OVEPVh6D3kL84gjPe.html, you can also use inks to monoprint and those you don't need to let dry

    Why did u choose a Cricut over a silhouette? 👩🏻‍🎨

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a couple of reasons. 20 years ago I had the original Cricut, which I used with cartridges. It was easy to use but limiting. Then a few years later when the Silhouette came out I bought the first one and I found it so complicated and not user friendly to use with the computer. There was too much of a learning curve so I only used it once. which is very sad. I continued using my Cricut here and there but then stopped completely and never used either for many years. Both just sat in my basement. Truthfully even now I didn't want to get either new machine because I don't do cards or scrapbooking anymore and I thought I wouldn't use it. I also worried it would be too much of a learning curve. I have a friend that has silhouette and she said it was easy but I had had a negative experience. Even when 2 of my friends who have Cricut's told me it was so easy I was hesitant. But at least with the Cricut It had been easy to use, but limiting. So when Cricut contacted me and wanted to send me the Machine I didn't resist. I truly didn't know if I would have a way to use it for mixed media. If Silhouette would have contacted me, I'm not sure I would have said yes, I still worry its very hard even though it's probably not. But those types of memories stay with you especially if you spend a lot of money and feel like you've wasted it. So I guess to make a long story short, for me it is from personal experience. (sorry for the long winded answer lol)
