The guy did have an attitude. It’s like the agent said, if he’d acted like that trying to enter the US he wouldn’t have been treated half as well.
The TSA might not have thrown a similar person acting like that in jail, but probably would have denied him entry.

The fact is that it may be impossible to deport people if their home country does not cooperate. Often you must have a valid passport for them before you can deport them, and most illegals do not have passports.

If they're concerned so much about his financial status why don't they start issuing visa by considering applications in US before they any make travel plans. I feel sorry for the truck drivers in Calais. They get fined for something they did not do. I understand that they are starting to arm themselve, I would do the same.
In some cases though it IS their fault. Many of the drivers who are fined don’t follow basic security measures like using the till cord or secure locking systems.

Yet there are incidents where drivers accept payment to hide illegals in their loads. Tough call to prove. End of the day it is up to them to secure their load and the goods they are paid to protect and transport
They fine them to encourage the companies to take the necessary precautions in terms of having the correct up to date industry equipment to prevent immigrants. They fine the drivers to discourage the corrupt ones from being paid by the immigrants. Cause some truck drivers do actually help the immigrants hide for a fee.

I am glad the man who was a volunteer interpreter got to stay, but one thing struck me that I haven't seen mentioned - How do they know he was actually interpreting what they were saying properly?
The stories added up and they've heard these stories many times from many illegal immigrants. Also, when you are in this situation, honesty goes a long way and I think the acting interpreter knew that.
I feel that the guy with the gray hair who claimed to be 15 years old should had been personally escorted to the plane to be taken back to Afghanistan instead of releasing him. He probably is still hiding out somewhere in England working somewhere else.

Having no documents should be a mandatory significant prison sentence to stop people destroying them.
I watched a doco on homeless people in the UK. A man had come over from India, destroyed his passport at the airport, claimed asylum then fled the first chance he got. Thirty years later he was too old and tired to be working off the books at building sites and decided that he wanted to return to India. He turned himself in to immigration and they contacted their counterparts in India to confirm his identity and get documents for him to travel. Unfortunately for him they could find no records of his birth, schooling or passport so they told the UK he's their problem. At the end of the doco he was still living rough but was being assisted by a charity that were trying to prove his identity. His biggest regret was destroying his documents as now it was like he didn't exist and he wasn't hopeful that he would ever get back to his home. There are worse things than prison.
Why so? Just return them where you think they are from. If that country doesn’t want to accept them they can stay at the border until they decide to remember where they are from. No amenities provided. Jail is too expensive.

I was born in 1958, so I can speak from experience. I know how decade to decade attitudes changed. If it were 1979 you were talking about, sure. That argument might work. But not in 2009? No way.
The way they handle people at immigration in the UK is far superior to the way my mum (grandmother of 3 US Citizens) was treated at Newark Liberty International Airport. I had to sit on the floor of the immigration hall with my kids while we waited for her to get through "secondary holding". She was staying a month with her grandkids and had a return ticket on her..... We waited for HOURS - until a man spotted my kids US passports and asked me why we had been there 4 hours and I told him, he then investigated and an hour later she was released to us. Turns out her finger tips were too dry for the machine. So now she moisturises them before immigration.
Only a person from the US would be so easily violated.

If you’re going to “exaggerate” to a customs officer it’s probably a wiser idea to underestimate the length of your stay as opposed to overestimating the amount of time that you’ve known your sponsor. You can always choose to “extend“ your stay once they’ve put that six-month stamp in your passport.

I don’t agree fully, but sometimes (like the first man who had the yogurts) they try to actually prevent them by using locks and secure parking spots but other times they don’t try at all and park on the streets without locks. That border agent at Heathrow needs to realize that the phrase, "Are you happy to be interviewed?" is going to be taken very literally by Americans and therefore interpreted as a snide jab, even though it's idiomatic in Australia and the UK. I know better because I've watched so much Australian TV, but it seemed very odd to my ears the first time I heard it. He might want to consider using the phrase, "Do you consent to being interviewed?" when he is dealing with Americans. That will come off a lot more clearly and neutrally, and maybe prevent things from getting off on such a wrong foot.
Zachariah It’s not arrogance so much as it is an ingrained distrust of authority and the fact that Constitutional protections against said authority extend further in the US than in most countries. People do the exact same thing when dealing with Americans that this guy did here.
I wonder why Americans don't use that phrase as we hear it in New Zealand a lot too (we're almost Australians)... I think it's more friendly and respectful than using the very formal word "consent"; it implies that you only have to agree to it if you are fine with it and have no objections.

I'm American and the phrase can be misleading. Also with the question of when you met, could mean when you first met or when you last met. Most people understand what the agent is meaning to ask, but this guy doesn't seem to be too bright. Also has a lot of attitude against authority. Not sure why he'd go to Germany or UK, plenty of jobs here and who the hell can take a SIX MONTH vacation! The immigration office is not straight when he says the motive of illegals to go the UK is it is "just a place they all want to go to." A big reason these immigrants want to go to the UK in particular, as opposed to other European countries, is the UK economy has a low wage, poorly regulated economic sector other European countries do not allow to exist. It is the same reason the US attracts illegal immigration that Canada doesn't.

You can't let the whole world come live in the UK because they don't like their own countries. They need to solve the problems in their own countries. Half the people in Central and South American would go live in the US if they could.
