    Thank you for watching! Saddle Canyon is definitely the star here, condensing a lot of the challenges on this 800mi route into just 11 or so miles. Mostly I felt it was slower more so than difficult, with weird unobvious routes around impassible objects. Overall super cool! But maybe not what I expected given the amount of discussion this section receives.

      Do you think the hype depends on the high water years? Seems like those plunge pools would be significantly harder to navigate in wetter winters/springs?

    I've been watching your videos for a few years now and they only get better. You are a really talented storyteller with words and video. The in focus video of the flora and fauna of the trail with Sprocket in the background is an impressive blend of storytelling focal points. Many thanks for the time this takes to produce. Cheers.

    Thanks again. I really enjoyed this one too. Sprockets cold water face gave me a chuckle.

    Jupiter, awesome video! You're at the top tier of the purist thru hikers, sorry to say I'm more impressed with the sheer determination of Sprockets! It seems there's very few obstacles that she can't concur, and always with a smile!

    😅 when does sprocket get to film Jupiter ascending and descending in bushwhacking. Oh that's not forget the water crossings😂

    Beautiful and impressive accomplishament! I have experienced 120F in Tucson AZ a couple times. I can put up with it about 5 minutes at a time. 5 people who went hiking in nearby trails died on one of the days I was there. Takes a special kind of fitness, acclimation and knowledge to pull this off!

    I did think a few times on some of those down climbs that you and Sprocket would find me dead 🤪. Great videos!

    I'm surprised you went back into ribbon falls. I spent a couple of hours there and then a couple hours at the last water the day I hiked up the north rim. What an incredible day, can't wait to do it again.

    I don’t comment much but this section has me wondering what you eat in a day like the Rim to Rim route where it’s 120 degrees out. I would love to see something in the future about this- I don’t think it really exists out there for hikers. I know ultramarathon runners cover it but it would be super insightful to see your take on a day like that when it comes to calories.
    This has been an epic hike to watch man. I was on the PCT with you back in 22 and this hike easily blows that out of the water. Thank you for taking the time to film this journey. You are a beast.

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  14 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      I try and eat 100 to 200 calories an hour, every hour, with a bigger lunch. I consume water often even when I am not feeling thirsty to try and get ahead of things, and usually do two or three electrolyte packets per day and maybe more in an are like this!
      The trick I find is bringing foods I will actually want to eat (which differs for everyone) as once you're in the field some foods may have been a good idea, but if it's not appetizing and you don't want it then you're done for! So a good variety, but staple items I know for a fact that I will want.
      Big breakfast is also key for me these days. Again, even if I don't feel like eating a big breakfast in the morning I know I will be much happier later if I did

    Hi Jupiter, I, too, have been following you for years and have watched your video and narration skills reach their now-excellent level. Congratulations. It's a treat to find a new episode waiting to be opened of whatever it is that you're hiking - and your Hayduke account is stellar! It does the 'Trail's wow-factor the justice - and respect - it deserves. Thank you for the effort it takes to bring us along with you. Especially in the Hayduke's tough conditions; I'm sure there were plenty of times when you would rather not have bothered! Please say hi to Sprocket from a fellow Aussie. Kudos to you both. Have you ever thought of doing a piece on your videography craft? Equipment, favourite video shots, editing process, etc. I, for one, have always enjoyed your music choices. I'm sure there are many like me who would love to learn some tips and tricks from an expert. Just a thought.

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  19 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      Man I think about doing something like that here and there, like what is my 'process' or how do I go about conceptualizing these videos while filming out there. Any hesitation just comes from not personally thinking I am all that good. Maybe could be interesting still for anyone thinking of filming their own thru hikes, and lessons I've learned from doing it these past 6 years or so!
      And yeah many times it would be much easier to just not bother filming at all, but hey! That's what leads to bad videos! And I must remember that while out there. The less I bother, the worse the end product is.

    Nice video & dimensions. I've been to Phantom Ranch twice in the last 6 years (in the winter) and decades back took the N rim trail down to the campground and then back out, with some teens. I've been to most or all of your Hayduke routes in UT but never shot video. Saw Hayduke hikers in Needles Canyonlands, 2 years ago, we fed them & gave them water & electrolytes. Months ago I finished the Fedarko book, Walk in the Park - E to W travel across the expanse of the Grand Canyon. Good luck in your effort, stay safe and healthy, and enjoy your venture.

      What did you think of the Fedarko book? I haven't read it yet but enjoyed the emerald mile

    • @stephenlewis8143
      @stephenlewis8143 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JupiterHikes The book is well done, & is expansive. National Geographic has you tube pieces re sections of their hike. Pete McBride (who went with Fedarko) has Ted Talk pieces on the net where he speaks of the threats to the canyon, with daunting visual display of the helicopters flying all day on the W end of the canyon. Fedarko and McBride were helped out greatly by others - they would never have made it more than a week or two. Rich Rudow (who I've met) who pioneered canyoneering in the area & basically shuttled them through certain challenging zones & monitored them. Fedarko & McBride viisual and written, become the vehicle to address to the public, the grave dangers impacting the park. Large sections of the book relate to advocacy, along with anthropology, history, nature & the wilds & wonder of the outdoors.

    i imagine it is good to be home again. a well deserved rest no doubt. dont know how long since u truly finished the duke. may n june r long gone. not sure whats going on now and next.
    but it was a great trip. i honestly can say i am inspired to do it but i dont think my heart would be present. i remember when was no real cdt or any others . in the 70s those i guess were the dukes of their time . we had no phones, app, gps. there was only paper maps ... such as they were back then😊. but a compass no matter how 'crude' by to days units. i hink ive had a share of it but it gets in the marrow of the bone. but the body cant compete with the childish soul !!😮😊. thats y i enjoy ur films. may ur days b blessed amigo !!! when the time comes i think u would make a very good back country ranger. but the paramilitary- ness of todays forest ranger may put on the job fast enuf to suite ur soul . i wish the very best for BOTH of u where ever the trail leads . for now i await the next adventure.
    God bless.. keep the trail alive mi amigo😊

      Thank you! I think I would like to be a ranger, either backcountry or interpretive, but as far as I have ever heard I might need a college degree for such a career and that is not something I have. Could be wrong though and maybe something to consider more seriously sometime. I would certainly enjoy it

      No rain was expected anywhere nearby, so I wasn't too concerned with the possibility. Otherwise, find higher ground, camp at higher ground. Wait and head back the way we came once things are safe. If weather was more questionable I don't think we would have gone down at all, which is probably the real answer

    Great footage. Makes a difference when you set up the camera far away and walk into the distance.
    What was your max total weight (with food/water)? I like the closeup of your smartwatch stats. Would be cool to see a post-hike analysis of your stats with screenshots from the app. What you look at, what stats matter to you and why.

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Base pack weight was around 8lbs, just my gear. Most water I carried at once was 7 liters, so add on 16lbs. Then for that stretch I also had 3.5 days of food which was likely around 6lbs. So the most I had to carry on this hike was 30lbs or so

      That's the fun part! You don't know! But given that the water is static, there wouldn't be much problem swimming other than being very cold

    You considering the Grand Canyon Traverse?
    I’m impressed you managed to wear an alpha direct hoodie through the brush at the of saddle canyon and not destroy it 😅
    I think with the gpx tracks and beta online it’s a lot easier now. I read a lot of the older accounts of going through too and a ton of the time / challenge for folks seemed to be getting lost, taking the wrong bypasses etc

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've been pretty surprised with how durable alpha has turned out to be! It can definitely 'collect' a lot of random things in its fiber, but no real damage beyond looking a little scruffy now.
      As for the GPS tracks, I felt that none of ours actually reflected the bypasses or anything! They mostly went directly down the canyon, and if it weren't for the personal accounts of past hikers we had saved to read while out there I think our gps would have been fairly useless. Big help those past blogs were and definitely makes it a lot easier!

    I have recently become "Hayduke Curious", though I HAVE hiked all the Grand Canyon routes , so I am curious why you didn't hike Tonto to South Bass and then hitch across the river? Was it a water issue, because that IS an issue....

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  10 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      In a lot of cases we tried to stay true to the 'original' hayduke route, unless something much more interesting exists as there are many alternatives where that is the case! The original Hayduke does not go up to the south rim at all, so that's a good example of where we deviated so we could enjoy the south kaibab, and bright angel as well as the village on top.
      I think from there, my partner has never done a traditional Rim to Rim so it was the obvious choice. Just as well the typical hayduke route goes up to the north rim on the north kaibab too.
      We did have a friend who took the Tonto to the Bass, but I don't know how that went for them.
      In the end it is cool that there are so many options at pretty much every moment of this trip, as your question highlights perfectly!

      She pretty much constantly questions my judgment! Mostly because we are comfortable doing different things. An extreme example would be when I am happy to do some scrambling or rock climbing, but she might like to find a different way
