For one, at optimal level, Shulk is a very campy character with strong defensive capabilities. As demonstrated by one of the best Shulk players, Dragonbrain, Shulk's ability to camp with jump art and wait for his shield art to regen is a nuance to fight against (allowing him to live to crazy high percents). Sure, Kome doesn't play with a hint of such a playstyle in this set, but that doesn't take away from that the fact that is an annoying strategy against in other matchups. This form of play has been dubbed as "ghosting" from fellow community members, and it really shuts down characters with poor air mobility, as they can't challenge Shulk abusing full jumps with jump art. This degenerate playstyle makes it chore to fight the character in a tournament setting. Next would have to be Shulk's buster art. Undoubtedly the strongest art he has, this allows Shulk to string together dtilt, and throw combos for insane percentages (all thanks to the 1.4x dmg multiplier). I would so far as to say that you should avoid challenging Shulk in buster for as long as you can, as there is no benefit from fighting him when playing with this art. The only downside the art the has is that it grants Shulk 1.13 dmg vulnerability, which is negligible when taking into account the sheer utility that he obtains. For example, a slightly charged buster dsmash can break a full health shield, dtilt can combo into itself as much as 3 times, a successful throw can lend almost 20% alone, etc. In buster, the positives greatly outweigh the negatives, making it probably the most dishonest part to his kit. For more than just these reasons, and also from the fact that Shulk is one of the only characters to have a true confirm off of grab releasing (grab release > air slash on Puff), Shulk is a mentally exhausting character to fight in the hands of defensive player. His ability to "ghost" is unparalleled and extend percent leads to great lengths and the broken properties of buster make it favorable to avoid Shulk rather than to fight him. These are just some quick thoughts off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more to be named. I don't Shulk is a great character by any means, and does require great fundamentals to play, but the reward he gets off of defensive play and the buster art make him enjoyable to play against.
Are there more Shulk players now than before, or are the Shulk players making it higher in tournaments lately? I've been seeing a lot more Shulks in tournaments lately, and they're making it further than I've ever seen them get!
