I grew up in Wyoming, close to Yellowstone and Montana. Prime grizzly country. The speaker and horn are great ideas. I carry bear spray for stray dogs and coyotes. Bear spray is not a weapon. I also carry a Glock 10mm. That is a weapon. And is proven grizzly protection. Yes, I carry on my bike trips. In a chest holster. The main thing with grizzlies is not to surprise them. If you surprise one, especially with cubs, they will absolutely attack you. I have seen the aftermath of bear attacks working in a hospital. Also, perfect that you kept your food away from your sleeping area. We would cook and eat 100 yards from our sleeping area. I’ve seen bears destroy tents that had a tube of toothpaste in it.
I used to carry a air horn when I ride gravel in the midwest due to farm dogs. Once I was riding gravel in Missouri and this pitbull came at me from 50 yards so I unclipped and placed the bike between us and just tried to keep moving away from the dog. It just kept trying to attack me as I walked backwards. So that wasn't working so I used my air horn when the dog was within 5 feet of me and all it did was piss off the dog more and he became even more aggressive. Finally the owners came out yelling to call the dog back and eventually did get the dog back. I could hear them yelling it wouldn't hurt anyone, he was just scared....well that made two of us! I wonder if a bear would become more enraged, like the dog, with the air horn too? I am planning on riding the GDMBR next year and I appreciate your insight. Definitely will have bear spray along with best practices...carrying a pistol isn't practical, just not sure on the air horn. Using the air horn to alert them I suppose, but if aggressive, I don't know I would use it.
Great tips, thank you. Look into a Ursak bag - the Almighty Grizzly model is both bear and small mammal proof - combined with odor proof Opsak bag inside, as a lighter, more packable alternative to a bear canister.
