In Malaysia in 2016 I was travelling by myself for the first time in my life. I was up in the Cameron Highlands and a "guide" offered to show me some hiking tracks. I felt it could be dangerous as he seemed a little scammy but I was young and naive and looking for a bit of risk anyway. The guide took me down what looked less and less like tracks until we were just walking through steep downhill bush. He kept assuring me he knew where he was going until finally after over an hour walking off any track he admitted he had no idea where we were. The adrenaline when I realised our situation was wild. After the panic settled a little, I recalled that Google maps had asked me for the first time if I wanted to keep the last 200mb of downloaded maps for offline use only one day before this trek. An incredible stroke of luck. I eventually figured out the right direction (by zooming in on my GPS location, walking, and seeing which direction the dot moved), and eventually found a track back to town. We emerged from the forest just as the sun was setting, in to one of the poorest villages I have ever been in. It was surreal. A 2 hour walk turned in to a 9 hour exhausting ordeal. Could barely walk after. I am almost certain that we would have died if I had not had those offline maps. Neither of us had told anyone where we were going or what we were doing. We had both completely lost our bearings on the direction toward town and would have gone the opposite way in to an endless jungle, and the "guide" was old and far from fit. There was about half an hour there where I truly didn't know what to do, and the thought of spending the night in the jungle was terrifying.
You were so smart to download the offline map! Makes you wonder why the guide, who supposedly knew the trails, would've led you into a potential deadly situation. Nothing surprises me anymore, so thank goodness for GPS, which if he really knew where he was taking you, likely turned his potential sinister plan into an oh, sh*t, this one is smart! I couldn't imagine the panic that must've ensued during your ordeal, but I am so glad you made it back to safety!! 👍

The Taiwanese mountains are so beautiful. The streams and rivers are full of crystal clear water. I can see why people love to go hiking, but your videos show why safety is so important.
agree with most of it and specially agree with cancelation of trips, it may feel really pity, but I did cancel trips so many times. I don`t want bad weather on begging of my trip if I go high mountains for several days.
Long comment. We are unable to estimate most things without practice. We either overshoot or undershoot. We either hugely overestimate or underestimate. Only real experience can tell how close our prediction was to reality.
Your videos are quite haunting. The beauty of the land is incredible but it is also dangerous in equal measure. I can see how even someone prepared and with the right equipment could have an accident on some of those trails. Thank you for what you do. Both in search and rescue and in teaching people about the dangers and how to be safe.

Thank you for sharing all these tips and warnings, these trails are at parts like scaling walls literally. And I have walked some trails where I know if I had to be lost I would not have the strength to surpass some jumps or stretches that could easily be done when you do have the strength and I can see how easily someone could miss a step to fall through these treacherous crevices and slippery grounds full of moss. Folks - please don't underestimate the mountains! I live in a popular walking area and see unprepared parties almost every day. What seems like a simple walk can turn into a life-threatening epic in moments if you don't know what you're doing. For any non-trivial mountain walk it's VITAL that: 1) You learn to navigate properly - most serous accidents involve navigation errors. That means understanding what a map tells you about terrain - using a paper map and compass - using an offline GPS app with high quality mapping. I ALWAYS carry a paper map to back up my GPS - phones simply aren't reliable enough on their own. And I practice with map and compass on a regular basis. Navigation is a complex skill - commit yourself to learning it properly. 2) You learn to plan a route properly. That means ensuring that the project is suitable for your skills, experience and fitness - understanding how the weather conditions will affect your route - estimating time and distance - understanding potential dangers like avalanche or river crossings that may flood - leaving full details of your route with a responsible party who will call in SAR if you are overdue. 3) You carry suitable bad-weather gear, emergency food and shelter, so you survive at least a day or two if you have to wait for rescue. 4) And often neglected - CARRY A GPS-ENABLED PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). This is a satellite communicator that can call in the SAR team to your exact location at the press of a button. My goodness, the absolute contrast in these videos. Heartbreak and devastation in a setting so breathtakingly beautiful, it's terrifying how dangerous it can be.
Mesmerizing. The video is well done and the beauty and treachery of these mountains is something you can feel. Sadly, it doesn't end well but you've helped take somebody home.
Lots of strange things go on in the mountains all over the world….regardless of what country or mountain range you are hiking in. It’s always best to hike in a group, however, if you must hike alone, always take a waterproof personal locator beacon with you. Keep in mind, that mountains take on a life of their own and they are very unforgiving.
The work you do here is amazing and heart breaking. Thank you for what you do to save some people and bring closure to families and friends for others! When I was a kid (18 yrs old), I went on a month-long Outward Bound hike and climbing adventure in the Cascade mountains in Washington State (US). It was challenging (even for a fit, athletic, 19 year old - very young woman). These mountains look WAY more challenging (and very easy to get lost) than what I experienced MANY years ago (I'm now 60). I agree with all the comments you made in your video - to be safe. I also think for going on just a part day hike, you should still pack more food and water (or water purification) than you think you need - so you are prepared for an emergency. ❤
Found this channel today it popped up i do not no way but it is the second one i watch and cannot stop. Love what you do! Ofcourse the reason why is not that great 😢 so many missing happy you give these families rest and there loveones back
What a sunday for me...Your videos suddenly was on my suggested videos, I am never into hiking videos or so. This is different and this is something a realization about life as well. I subscribed!
jesus the amount of terrain you guys covered was insane, my condolences to you. I don't even know how hard it must be to have the bad ending. This scenery does make me want to go hiking though-- safely!
Your videos have popped into my feed randomly because of TH-cam algo but damn I'm glad I did. The way you present these rescue or recovery missions shows the beauty of nature that entices us to these mountains - mesmerizing watching you walk through a dense forest and some magnificent views from the top, but equally how deceptively dangerous it is.
TH-cam just guided me to your video. Thank you for sharing this with all of us. The forest is a death trap to those who are not path finders or rangers. You are an angel rescue

Such a good attitude of gratefulness towards what you have. 👍

15:50 Ughh...gut wrenching seeing what looks to be family members. Thank you for the efforts you and David took as well as the SAR teams.
In Uganda..we have guides......and the security is good....
Why are these living mountains so un forgiving?

Respect!
I really enjoy watching you're video's here in the UK, you are an inspiration my friend ❤️
Taiwan is very beautiful but for very experienced hikers I think. Thank you for thoughtful content.

What a sunday for me...Your videos suddenly was on my suggested videos, I am never into hiking videos or so. This is different and this is something a realization about life as well. I subscribed!
Your team and you are angels on earth. May you all be blessed and safe in all your searches.
To think that something so simple could cause something so sad. Good work everyone on the team for (hopefully) bringing closure to the family.
Who woulda thought you'd find someone lost deep in the mountains through CCTV. Sure is a hell of a time to be alive.
jesus the amount of terrain you guys covered was insane, my condolences to you. I don't even know how hard it must be to have the bad ending. This scenery does make me want to go hiking though-- safely!
You deserve more subscribers! Your job is helping people to find their loved ones. Salute to you bro! Keep it up!
