  • Maybe not as famous as noid, Kalaka was an attempt to start a new word, in this entertaining public service announcement from the 70's featuring a singing skunk.

    This is one of the most memorable commercials of my life. Like others, I still say "kalaka" whenever I hear carpooling mentioned. That's it's 46+ years old is just a wow moment for me. I'm old.

    Lyrics:
    Double up every morning;
    Double up going home at night.
    Double up every day
    It's a better way!
    You're (We're?) gonna have more fun together....
    (SKUNK) Beats driving alone.

    I remember this from my childhood in the 70's. When I heard Noah recently, I thought he was voiced by Earl Hindman (the mysterious Mr Wilson from Home Improvement).

    Holy Crap, it does Exist! I always remembered this, but could never find any proof of it's existance on the web. I feared I may have imagined it, but a friend also knew about it. Awesome. A+++ Would view again.

    Wow! I hadn't thought about this in years. Found it quickly just searching "70s ride share psa." This one always reminded me of Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks doing the 2000-year-old man.

    I always thought this was advertising at it's best. Kalaka has been part of my vocabulary since the first time I heard it. Of course it's rare that anyone understands me when I say it. An accurate translation is only given to those who you know to have an excellent sense of humour. And if you come across someone who knows the word - you've got a new friend. If they can decline it - perhaps a soulmate..... that's probably older than dirt. That's how I looked at it 30 odd years ago - now I'm feeling older than said dirt.

    This is SO funny! I remember this from when I was a kid in the '70s and I have always referred to "carpooling" as Kalaka! I was talking to my Mom about this yesterday because my brother & I are going to "carpool" out to their house for dinner (they live about 35 minutes away) and she had no idea what I was talking about. I said that I was going to look it up and this came up on Google! What a BLAST from my past! LOVE IT! So I will continue to refer to carpooling as KALAKA!

    I vaguely recall this ad. My Mom, a high school teacher, carpooled during her entire stint as a teacher, from 1962 until her death 21 years later. For a while, there were four teachers in her car, heading to the same school. Other times as few as two. But she always carpooled. The only problem was getting her not always cooperative school age son to get dressed on time so she could get going. I'm still sorry about that, Mom. ❤

    Speaking of feeling alone in remembering an ad - I still hope, though I know I'd regret it in the end, to see the circa-late-80s ad for an alien themed kid's pasta. In it, an alien asks his young human friends, "You Earth people put stars in a bowl?" The alien's voice always bothered me...
