    So great! You showed me this really quickly, but I didn't get the technique for erasing layers or doing the cast shadow - so useful! Tutorials like this that are just about tool techniques are so great! And the beauty of the piece of art you created is just devastating.

      Lol. Right?! Expect my show at the MOMA soon. But seriously thanks for the kind words. Would be good to hook up that painting session we threatened months ago.

    I'm making the leap from 20 years of Photoshop to my iPad Pro and Procreate and Sketchbook Pro. Thanks for your clear and informative tutorial.

      Hey thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I have a lot of years in Photoshop as well. The start of me learning was basically just trying to figure out how much of my PS process could directly transfer and then trying to solve everything that didn't work directly. I have to say, it's been fun learning.

    I came here from your “Intergalactic Buckaroo” video. This was really helpful! I've been a subscriber for a while now, and I can't believe I missed this one. Thank you so much for this neat trick!
    Also, yes, this may indeed be your masterpiece. Lol
    You mentioned in the video that you were watching Stranger Things while filming this video. Whenever I try to watch something and draw/scribble at the same time, I always find that, after a while, I focus more on the movie/show, and ultimately stop working on my drawing. Maybe it's because of FOMO on the show/movie. What would be your advice for dealing with this problem?
    Anyway, thank you again for your channel and Insta page!

      @zatransis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for all the kind words. I appreciate it!
      As for your dilemma, I don't know how to answer that because I usually do the opposite. Maybe in that moment ask yourself why you're not absorbed in your art. Maybe you can make a small tweak to make it more exciting for you.

  • @wwvuillemot
    @wwvuillemot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Mike, I love both your illustrations and tutorials. A question for you: is there a good source for thinking about different types of light and shadow. I am self-taught, and slowly piecing together, or rather learning to deconstruct a piece into constituent parts. Beyond color theory, how do you categorize the various elements of shadow and light? I.e., bounce, rim, et cetera. Any elements that you feel are universal, versus likely specific. For example, you generally apply rim lighting. Do you consider it essential to a (more) finished piece? And any tips on how to approach each of these? Or are there other sources you recommend? Again, thanks for all the videos! They are both hugely educational and inspiring.

    • @zatransis
      @zatransis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ward Wesley Vuillemot Ward Wesley Vuillemot Heya! Thanks for the kind words. I'll try to reply to it thoroughly. I'm bad at giving people specific things to look at because I'm largely self-taught as well. I did what you are referencing: deconstructing others' art. The best suggestion I can give there, is to continue to do that, focus on trying out something new every few pieces, and try to learn the "why" of the techniques you're trying. As for me adding a rim light, it's a good tool for staging the character in their environment while also separating them. So, it's not always essential, but it's a nice trick. As time goes on I'm getting more deliberate about how I treat bounce light and rim light and trying to not use an out of the box rim light. That said, sometimes it's just striking to slap a rim light on something.

    Very good tutorial (again)! You're definitely my best reference on Procreate!
    I just noticed that you do 'select content' twice on every shape; one for clear and other to paint the shadow layer. I discovered that if you hold 'S' (select) button Procreate repeats the last selection.

  • @hanbui7233

    very useful tutorial! thanks! btw can you explain why this happens? if you select layer A, and then work on layer B which is above, and you erase content on layer B, it only erases the area of overlap with layer A. I would have expected it would erase contents of layer B only. does that make sense?

    • @zatransis
      @zatransis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      That sounds odd. If you still have Layer A's contents as your selection, the selection is what will be affected on Layer B. Maybe you still have Layer A's contents selected.

    Hi Mike.. Just found your channel and love this tutorial video. Can you do more of these? After learning these techniques I found it hard to apply them to your other videos, especially confused on what colors you choose when blocking in and then choosing shadow colors using multiply.

    • @zatransis
      @zatransis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for the kind words! I wouldn't say that everything in every video works interchangeably. I think there are ways to implement all of the techniques, but you'll notice that I don't employ every technique in each piece. It's more about collecting a lot of techniques and choosing when to use them.
      Now, regarding the color choice, what exactly do you mean here? I want to make sure I answer you as accurately as possible.

    • @CharlieNoodles
      @CharlieNoodles 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Henry actually this is a question I have as well. When you create your shadow layer is there any reason to choose a particular colour for the shadow? Something that I'm not sure about with using multiply is does it matter what colour you use and if so how do you decide what colour it should be?

    • @michaelsteven1090
      @michaelsteven1090 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Henry Mike, Jeremy above is exactly what I was asking also. Any general painting techniques would be really great..I really need to learn workflow..I get lost after sketching in and then having to render it..Keep up the great work.

    Quick question? How do you stop this technique from leaving a small line between the select clears on the shadow layer?

    • @zatransis
      @zatransis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is just sometimes a problem in Procreate. It COULD be a resolution issue. Also, sometimes I just spot it and smudge the shadow towards the edge to clean it up a bit. Lastly, it could be a brush you're using. If you're using a brush from my pack, my other suggestions could work. If you're using another brush, it could be too "fuzzy". That'll create a ton of aliasing issues with this method.

    • @bskinner1986
      @bskinner1986 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Henry ah ok cool. So I work at 300 dpi minimum. So guessing it’s just the brushes. I’ll have to have a play and see which brushes work and which don’t see if i can figure out what’s happening. Thank you Mike

    i guess im not udnerstandign a step- for the shadows, you paint in multiply? But what color? I didn't see you pick any colors when paintign in the shadows? do you just use a white brush in multiply mode to darken the layer color already there?

    • @zatransis
      @zatransis  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      White won't do anything if the layer is set to Multiply. White is transparent in the eyes of a Multiply layer. In this case I use a light purple. You can see it in the video when I select my shadow color.

    • @zatransis
      @zatransis  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for subscribing! Alpha lock doesn't give me what I'm looking for which is keeping the shadow layer separate from the other layers. With alpha lock you have to paint on the layer you have locked. If I could alpha lock a layer and then paint on others I'd be happy.
