Gravitas: Why Europe's Energy supplies depend on Russia

  • Russia is the third-largest supplier of natural gas in the world. 72% natural gas & 48% oil exports from Russia go to Europe. If a war happens, Europe's energy supplies could get crippled. Palki Sharma tells you how this has unnerved energy markets.

Palki, I understand that war is not good for the people of Ukraine, and as an Indian, I fully sympathize with them. However, you need to also dig deep into the background and provide more objective coverage showing us the Russian side as well. They are not Taliban, and they are not fundamentalist Christians like 18th-century Conquistadors hell-bent on obliterating an innocent nation. They resent fighting Ukrainians much more than the West because to them, fighting Ukrainians is like fighting a family member.
Ukraine agreed to remain neutral which is documented at the time when they dismantled the Soviet nuclear arsenal from their territory (whose controls were in Moscow). By treaty, Russia, USA and UK assured them protection. However, the arms lobby in NATO found a loophole where they could install a puppet regime (which they did through Euromaidan 'revolution'), who would then ask for NATO membership, making it look voluntary.
But they forgot about the commitment that Ukraine made to neutrality. Tell me, what would the Americans do if Russia stationed troops and nuclear missiles on Mexican soil? What would UK do if China stations weapons in Northern Ireland border?
Let's be fair to both sides here. You make Russia look like a monster, for a war that was imposed on them against innocent Ukrainian people by a puppet regime.

Absolute nonsense, nobody wants this to happen except for the Russians. The status quo had been working out just fine for the petroleum industry, the risks of war far outweighs the prospects of breaking into new markets. If anything oil and gas producers stand to lose profitability in a war since the belligerent nations will enact price fixing or even assume state control over this strategically critical resource.

Countries like Russia, North Korea and Iran have developed resistance to withstand tough economic sanctions over the time. With the type of regimes that head these nations, economic sanctions are absolutely proved refutal.
But not all nations have developed a thriving market like Russia proved it just did. Despite all sanctions, Russia has virtually kept Europe dependent on it with its Gas supplies, so much so that Europe hesitates very much to confront Russia.
This just makes me wonder what will happen if Russia slaps back some sanctions on Europe ?

@Karl Von Eberfeld-Dunquartzhausen all NATO allies will loose with their sanctions.USA will be the only one profitting out of this crisis.
USA will profit by supplying Gas and Oil to Europe. Also they will further supply military equipment to European market to enhance their military against Russia and in this cause they will grow their economy whereas the whole of Europe will suffer due to years of reliance on oil and gas from Russia.
Euro is also posing a threat to US Petro Dollar dominance and this crisis is an advantage USA is seeing in destroying Euro so US $ will continue to reign.
That is the reason why USA kept on hyping the threat of War because she sees this war a great advantage to her deteriorating economy to benefit from while she doesn't care about the devastation her European NATO allies will encounter.

The story with oil isnt that simple.
Each location has a different quality/type of oil. Refineries are built to refine a specific kind of oil. You can't chop and change suppliers.
On top of that, most of Canada's oil reserves are bits of oil mixed with a whole lot of sand. It's not a normal extraction process.

The problem isn’t as much oil, as LNG. Natural Gas is the lifeblood of energy and heating. The EU and specifically Germany, has been pushing to “Go Green”. That sounds nice, and all. But we live in the real world. Green Energy is too underpowered, and unreliable. France will weather this storm better than Germany because the invested heavily into Nuclear. However Nether Nuclear nor Green Energy can be 100% relied upon. You need ether Coal or LNG. Coal is cheap but dirty, and will never fly in a modern Europe. Germany needs a new energy source, or LNG supply.
Now I’m a red blooded American, and if we ramp up our production we can supply Europe. However, that is not practical. All the LNG will be shipped on ships. Germany needs a Pipeline… that’s why they picked Russia for its LNG supply. However that’s not going to happen anymore. I think Germany should invest into Norwegian LNG. They have a smaller supply, and it will be more expensive. However Norway is a stable, reliable, friendly democratic member of NATO. They will charge more, but will not hold their customers hostage.

Crippling is a very strong word. Every EU country has strategic gas reserves... my country for example has enough for 90 days. That is plenty enough to get us through the winter but that is not their main purpose. Their main purpose is to give individual countries and the EU as a whole time to find alternative sources of gas and power in general... Contrary to popular belief Europe has a lot of still usable coal powerplants... they are just mothballed and unused. Germany still have all their nuclear reactors working, they are in shutdown mode because it takes years to safely empty and decommission a reactor. So the only thing Russia can realistically cripple by cutting us from their gas is their own economy (50% of all Russian export goes to the EU and most of it is gas and oil) and our climate goals for next 3-5 years.
