Get tickets if you can, they are selling out fast. 'Megitsune' is a difficult song to sing - so Su-metal uses it for sound checks and to check how she is sounding before concerts. The official videos are all great - a very large majority of fans (but not all) agree the live performances are even better. It often tops fan polls for favourite song and they have played it live more often than any other song. It is arguably the song that showcases best what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains the fox masks in the video and the one Su has in the breakdown in the live version) which, as you found, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. The breakdown in the middle of the song (that has pig squeal screams, they are more obvious in the studio recording) and the intro in the live version uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su pulled out the tanto (short blade) from her microphone in the video - she did the high kick in the live - she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss. All the Foxhole references you've been seeing and the fox emojis🦊are about the BABYMETAL lore where they were chosen by the Fox God to unite the world through their music ... they have a lot of lore that goes right back to when they started. Its all in fun and it gives them an excuse to invent storylines for some of their concerts and the albums etc - and it can get very complicated. Because of the decline of metal in Japan and the dominance of Idol pop music, he summoned three metal spirits and sent them to earth to lead a renaissance of metal (Metal Resistance) in which they enter the three girls Su Moa and Yui and take them over when they go on stage to perform. Some fans believe that their producer KobaMetal is actually The Fox God and you see his trickster side when he teases cryptic messages to the fans about what they will do next and also places cryptic messages in the lyrics of the songs which the fans then have to attempt to decipher. This song Megitsune talks about how in social situations women are expected to be pleasant and smiling even if that is not how they are actually feeling and how this is sometimes mistaken as romantic interest by men, later after being rejected the man will unfairly accuse the woman of being megitsune (a tease) but really the woman is just acting out the role that Japanese society demands of them. This is how I interpret the message of the song, but others may have their own interpretations as most Babymetal songs are like this intentionally so people can take whatever message from them that resonates with them personally.
Just to add on here, When they say "a fox, a fox, I'm a Female Fox" it's not suggesting they think they are "pretty" as a westerner male would construe what a Foxy Female would look like. It's just like what @Chris Harris said in his comment about Female Foxes and the mythic meaning in Japanese culture. Also, sometimes if a female is nice to a Male they get the wrong Idea and when the male advances are rejected, the male feels like the female is being deceitful when they are just being nice and/or friendly. Some really deep meaning to the lyrics in all of Babymetal songs honestly.

Legend 1997 is the same concert you saw Gimme Chocolate!! when SuMetal is celebrating her 16th Birthday, is a safe option to react but the downside on this is you can't hear the Kami Band in some of these songs (except for Headbanger!! and the final songs during the encore), so that's why live at Budokan 2014 and after are the best option to hearing them live. "Megitsune" with "Karate" are my 2 favorite studio MV's. They said that the choreography is one the most difficult for them. The Temple they filmed this in, is a "Must See' for The One when they go to Japan. Su says "Maidens are not to be underestimated" when she pulls the knife. It is a line from a Japanese crime movie and the line is spoken by the daughter of the crime lord. Did you notice that Su had the Mic-Knife in her hand for the entire video?!? There is a video that has commentary by the girls on making the video. The live video is from the legend of 1997 concert, the legend being Su. She turned 16 the day before the concert. Yui and Moa are 14!!!

i saw them 3 days ago in Munich, they were the opening act of Sabaton concert. I'm from spain but i bought my ticket for them. i like Sabaton too but Babymetal... is another level. They were amazing. Megitsune is arguably their most played song live, they played in almost every show, with very few exceptions, like when they have totally different setlist in two coupled shows. And they still do a thing during the break, when SU goes for the mask she gets back and turns toward MOA and starts a "clash" between the two, making faces each other to see who laughs first. It's a tradition they keep alive in time, they still have a lot of fun on stage 😅! 🤘🦊⚡️

Definitely enjoying your reactions, but I'm also glad you won't be putting BM in the poll for this coming week. Nothing spoils a good new reactor faster than a speedrun 😁 The 'fox thing' has to do with the lore behind the band, that they were chosen by the 'Fox God' to revive metal or somesuch. Their lore in general tends to be very convoluted, not very clear, and sometimes self-contradictory. It's more about adding a little more fun and entertainment to the whole package than about telling a specific story. The fact that Megitsune also references foxes isn't because of the lore but because both of them draw from Japanese folklore and mythology. If you want to get a clearer idea of what this song is about (or any of the songs from their first two albums), I recommend looking up the blog of a Japanese fan who goes by Du-metal - just search 'Du-metal Babymetal translations' or something and you should find it pretty easily. He does a good job of providing the cultural context that really helps with songs liket his one.
I knew that you would approve of the MV; they have several others that are just as good. But I will be the first to say that BABYMETAL's live performances are nothing short of amazing, and I thought it was good of you to do a "side-by-side". Hi Nikki, hello from UK I liked this better than the last one, but not as much as Gimme Chocolate which I have played a lot as it is such a catchy feel good tune 😁 I admire how the three girls adhere to each nuance of the dance routine, especially being such a young age. I think that someone said that Su (the lead singer) performed in the live show on the day after her sixteenth birthday? I think that there are merits to both the video and live show for this song, but because people said that Gimme Chocolate had the band and vocals dubbed from the album rather than the live performance I wonder if the same happened with this song? Is that really her live singing voice? It sounds like it might be...

Fans are winning too when enjoying and having so much fun seeing this live every night at Sabaton's Europe Tour like yesterday, but they also announced another Europe headline tour in November, along with the Babyklok Tour, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this song like they did recently in all these concerts, we always love the shanenigans between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown.
Thanks for coming back with this suggestion and one of BM fans favorite song.
This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen" a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
Song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox.
"Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she's doing sound check with this song before live concerts.
The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary:
The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘
Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀
If you wanna know everything about BM you should watch "A BabyMetal Guide" by CrypticMisery, is updated until early 2021 but at least is something to start the basics.

Legend 1997 is the same concert you saw Gimme Chocolate!! when SuMetal is celebrating her 16th Birthday, is a safe option to react but the downside on this is you can't hear the Kami Band in some of these songs (except for Headbanger!! and the final songs during the encore), so that's why live at Budokan 2014 and after are the best option to hearing them live.

"Megitsune" with "Karate" are my 2 favorite studio MV's.
They said that the choreography is one the most difficult for them. The Temple they filmed this in, is a "Must See' for The One when they go to Japan.
Su says "Maidens are not to be underestimated" when she pulls the knife. It is a line from a Japanese crime movie and the line is spoken by the daughter of the crime lord. Did you notice that Su had the Mic-Knife in her hand for the entire video?!?

The live video is from the legend of 1997 concert, the legend being Su. She turned 16 the day before the concert. Yui and Moa are 14!!!

i saw them 3 days ago in Munich, they were the opening act of Sabaton concert. I'm from spain but i bought my ticket for them. i like Sabaton too but Babymetal... is another level. They were amazing. I will see them again life this time in my city Barcelona in december, and this time they will be the main event . I'm very excited!!
Megitsune is arguably their most played song live, they played in almost every show, with very few exceptions, like when they have totally different setlist in two coupled shows.
And they still do a thing during the break, when SU goes for the mask she gets back and turns toward MOA and starts a "clash" between the two, making faces each other to see who laughs first.
It's a tradition they keep alive in time, they still have a lot of fun on stage 😅!

Also my favorite song (again) co-headlining (lol) with "Akatsuki", after I experienced it live last week and got deeply touched by the song and the performance.

These songs are so early, there is so much left to enjoy as they grow through the albums. If like me there will be some you like and some not so much but all their stuff is the highest of quality.

@@nikkireviews I really like metal Kingdom there's a long running joke amongst babymetal fans where people end their comments with "not a cult" because there are videos where the whole crowd are worshipping her even on their knees if space allows and Metal Kingdom looks like a cult film or something it's pretty good I think. The 'fox thing' has to do with the lore behind the band, that they were chosen by the 'Fox God' to revive metal or somesuch. Their lore in general tends to be very convoluted, not very clear, and sometimes self-contradictory. It's more about adding a little more fun and entertainment to the whole package than about telling a specific story. The fact that Megitsune also references foxes isn't because of the lore but because both of them draw from Japanese folklore and mythology.
If you want to get a clearer idea of what this song is about (or any of the songs from their first two albums), I recommend looking up the blog of a Japanese fan who goes by Du-metal - just search 'Du-metal Babymetal translations' or something and you should find it pretty easily. He does a good job of providing the cultural context that really helps with songs liket his one.

I think that there are merits to both the video and live show for this song, but because people said that Gimme Chocolate had the band and vocals dubbed from the album rather than the live performance I wonder if the same happened with this song?
