1-1-2025 Always Look Busy & Avoid Fireworks

- Late afternoon on New Year’s Eve Jackie visited the nest. She didn’t bring a stick, so grabbed a large one from the middle of the nest, moved it to the side and then, not quite satisfied, moved it to another spot.
The huge size of Jackie’s crop was very obvious, like the zipper was ready to pop open. Eagles can hold about 2 pounds of food in their throat’s expandable pocket and digest slowly-Jackie may be trying to set new records on how much it can hold!
All while she moved other sticks and aerated the nest, Jackie kept looking around as if she was expecting someone. When no one came, she laid down-pancaked-in the nest bowl to check out the status of her work.
After laying only a short time, she popped up to do more looking around, then left out the back door…
…and could quickly be heard nearby having a serious discussion that might have sounded a bit like complaining…as if perhaps someone might have been expected at the nest and didn’t show up?
Jackie soon returned and went back to work in between looking around. She was so busy, she missed Shadow’s fly-by as he circled around to finally show up through the back door. With this needed help, they were able to move a big stick. And Shadow lovingly nibbled on Jackie’s forehead as they worked. With that calming effect, Jackie got that first big stick to click exactly into the right spot.
Just after dusk, Shadow was even doing some flirting with tiny bites on Jackie’s tail…and she took it in stride, looking like maybe that’s exactly what she needed. Shadow left first, with Jackie right behind, and they both settled into the nearby Roost Tree for the night…
…well, they probably thought it was for the night. But, rudely, shortly after midnight, someone set off a burst of illegal fireworks on the shoreline just across the bay…the eagles let out a surprised cry…and they apparently took off from the Roost Tree. This morning, neither of them was there and they were not spotted or heard in the area all day.
This has happened before with fireworks…and upsets other animals and birds in the area as well. We will keep fingers crossed that they return soon to their nesting activities.

Thanks for this video!💕 I hope that people will understand the harm caused by fireworks.😢 This is a huge stress for birds, animals and beasts💔
I contacted the mayor of BB previously about the fireworks and he was as helpful as getting an STD. Blew me off as did one of the city council members. Repubs are not animal welfare people.
@@baiba5413 please, they are obviously aware of a machine invading their privacy and its constant noise while being filmed, at least the fireworks stop
Also for military veterans suffering from PTSD
@@bonnie_gail The camera nest the nest? It is silent. The eagles can see their reflections at certain angles if the weather is right but the camera isn’t invading their privacy. The eagles chose the nest and they’ve stayed for years. If they were bothered by it, they would have left.
Not to mention the massive fire hazard.
Thank you Sandy. You are a true advocate of the wild. 💜
Beautiful! Feels milder so far this year. What a gorgeous creature Jackie is! I never get used to it.
They are simply breathtaking. Absolutely beautiful birds. I so enjoy watching them. Thank you for all the work done to bring us these captivating videos.
🎉🦅💕🦅 Happy New Year J&S !!! My Favorite Couple!!!!
I started watching this beautiful couple a year ago & they have never ceased to amaze me. ❤❤❤
I also have been watching for a year. They warm my heart & calm my soul🤗
Such beautiful majestic birds. ❤❤❤
They are so awesome to watch. And we learn so much from them. Thank you for all the posting you do , very much appreciated! ❤
Wishes for a healthy and happy 2025 to Jackie, Shadow, and all!! 🦅💖🦅
Sad news that, once again, humankind doesn't seem to care about anyone but themselves. Feel so bad for living creatures trying to navigate our world. They all deserve so much better from us as cohabitants of our world. Jackie and Shadow, so magnificent and so deserving of respect! Thank you Sandy for your updates, always look forward to those so much!
@Nannette11- thank you. I agree. It’s also the litter and those who suffer from PTSD along with domesticated animals- it’s selfish and a shame. I wish you well my friend ! Liz
@edwardizhonig204 Thank you.... just feels good knowing that others see this. Also, what a fire risk!
@Nannette11- agreed! Yes, it does feel good to know there are others who understand just how important/significant this issue is and that it’s totally preventable. Take care and be well! Great chatting!
@@edwardizhonig204 You left out the massive air pollution and fire hazard. Watch air sensors on the 4th of July. It's horrible how much pollution they generate.
@climateanxiety2825- yes thank you friend!! I wish they were not even made. There is nothing positive except a humans minute of selfish “ happiness “ I put that in quotes. Take good care. Your friend , Liz
By far, best channel in YT :) What a lovely video ! Thank you so much for posting
Thank you for the video Sandy.i'm sure Jackie n Shadow will show up and keep building their nest soon.Happy New Year to all at FOBBV.🎉
That is upsetting. I wish people would realize how fireworks adversely affect wildlife (and people and the environment). I hope they are back soon. ❤
Happy New Year! They're so beautiful 😍
The best looks nice an comfy even for me. Add some fluff and a blanket, I would be happy in it.
Babies will love it.
But these two are always getting the new and improved baby guards in it, just in case their little ones play rough.
So very sorry this happened to our love birds and so many other species effected by fireworks GLOBALLY. It's unfortunate laws permit this upsetting sound
The description of the video says that the fireworks were illegal. Crime caught on camera
Happy New Year to the FOBB community. Never realized the birds react same as cats and dogs- looking for quick cover. Maybe they had their own fireworks elsewhere? You never know!
Omg their beaks form a 🫶
Fireworks have always scared me
Great show ,soon we will see eggs.
Breathing so heavy this year. Hope ok.
Crime caught on camera! With such good quality images here, I imagine that the site of the fireworks could be located, and the property owner fined. I hope it was A LOT!! 🦅🦅J&S are so sweet together
I wish they would ban all fireworks! The drone show is just as good…
Toss in something soft to lay on and keep warm. haha
Starting the year off right with jackie
Sooooo magnificent
Fireworks should be banned around eagle nests.😢😢😢
That's why the description says "illegal firewords.'" They are banned but some people chose to bring them and light them anyway. Hopefully they were caught and punished. It's a massive fire risk to be lighting fireworks in Southern California like that.
Fireworks are illegal in CA completely. The only fireworks allowed are handled by companies.
This is a state that simply cannot allow people to play with fire, or the whole thing would be burned to ash.
Good!!!
What does the law state about fireworks? And where might hav they gone? Surprised they didn’t escape together
Hi there! There is a ton of habitat that is deep in the forest where they can hide out. We can only observe what we see on camera, but they sure didn't stay gone long!
When do they start bringing in the fluff to lay the eggs in? Wasn't it the end of January last year that she laid her eggs?
We can send them some fluff! 😁 Big Bear Valley, the tallest tree, the nest, attention: Jackie and Shadow ❤😁.
Fluff usually appears at the very end, right before egg-laying. In years past Jackie has laid her eggs between the months of January and March, with January being her 'favorite month'.
❤
When do they lay eggs please watched last year
"The whole area of Big Bear near Grey's Peak is closed bssically all winter... while locals hope... Mama eagle tends to lay the eggs around the end of February or beginning of March."
In years past Jackie has laid her eggs between the months of January and March, with January being her 'favorite month'.
Do we know what happened to Jackie's left foot? Poor thing.
Jackie is fine. More than likely it was just a bit of debris. Hope this helps!
I’ve never heard either Jackie or Shadow breathe so heavily.
We upgraded the quality of our microphone during the off-season this year. Their breathing and other noises will come through much more clearly now.
@ Thank you Sandy. 💘
I thought this channel let us know which one Jackie and which one Shadow///?
Jackie, like all female bald eagles, is 25-33% larger than the males. Jackie’s beak is also longer and thicker from top to bottom. It’s easier to learn how to tell them apart if you start when they are side by side. This video may help you tell them apart in other ways th-cam.com/video/NR6MtKyybNs/w-d-xo.html.
@ thank you very much
How can I tell which one is the female?
Female is larger
