Excellent. Thank you. I'm a "leftist" since high school (marching against the Vietnam War in the late 60s). However, I never could stand those sectarian leftists (whom I nickname "the Stalinists"). And it continues. There's a recently coined term, "imperialism of idiots" that summarizes where that part of the "hard left" is now: only U.S./Western imperialism is bad; imperialism in opposition to the West's hegemony is OK. If you could explore this problem-a problem because there's a truth of "both/and" to the two imperialisms-I think you could greatly advance dialogue on the left. I fear that many on the left don't understand how important democracy is-and as you say ethics and values. They are at least as important as trying to move past capitalism and inequity. Probably linked.
Also: Thank you for the point about "hydrocarbon oligarchs" as a key part of this conversation that is not discussed enough (as you note). Having spent my life working and studying ecology and natural resource policies and allocation, I really appreciate that observation.

Thank you Professor Snyder. I am very far away from Europe and the US but I have major concerns about the rise of cynicism and of authoritarian populists that are usually very reactionary. I believe that putin, trump and Orban need to receive a clear message and that somehow Russia being defeated would go some way to achieving that.
I am also very concerned that Russia is attempting to extinguish Ukrainian identity in the same way that past leaders in Europe have to other groups.
So while it doesn’t directly me I do care.
Let this historian prove in a concrete manner and with tangible and highly convincing arguments that ukraine is a democracy…good luck 😂!

Enthusiasm for helping Ukraine in the United States is somewhat diminished by reference to the Post 9/11 misadventures in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. It's not right or fair or even logical, but it is a factor in the minds of many Americans. This situation is most unfortunate, because Vladimir Putin is as much our enemy, as he is Ukraine's enemy.

I can only disagree with his statement about climate change and the position of Putin et al in that 'scenario', because the science is certainly NOT settled and this man should know this if he took the time to do some studying on TH-cam. But his observations about the profound impact of Ukraine losing the war, and how so many people are now being 'altered' by the digital world they inhabit and are vulnerable to, are spot on.
I dispute your claim that Snyder's "statement about climate change" is somehow wrong. The percentage of scientists who don't think anthropogenic global warming poses a serious threat to the future of the human enterprise is in the low single digits. Aside from that reality, it is also clear that 1) "hydrocarbon oligarchs" are a problem for democracy, and 2) we will within this century be running short on fossil fuels with sufficient EROEI (look it up) to sustain our current levels of population and/or consumption.
Please cover how the Trump “Gang” may cause Ukraine to fail in kicking the Russians out of their Homeland.

Brilliant analysis on the crisis of US Democracy. We have all learnt that in a Democracy majority rules, right. Across the West we observe that Democracy has reversed basic design rules. I couldn't agree more with all this conclusions of of Timothy Snyder. Could we have him cloned for Europe please ? The US has an enormous asset in this person which makes me really jealous. One remark I have however: We currently have 1.65 Mio Ukrainian refugees in Germany, amongst those many wealthy ones. I don't know the exact number of Ukraine refugees in Poland but I think it doubles our numbers. These 'elites' will move back to Ukraine ultimately, once the dirty job is done, those who fought, died & got wounded for lifetime will be forgotten and life starts for these non patriots refugees in full scope. A deliberate process of Global Elites and absolutely unhealthy for Ukraine's future as part of Europe !

We have to support, the USA has to act strong. Our prosperity is based on our power and if we are not powerful enough, our way of living will extinct.
We don't have democracy, we have oligarchs and deep states that present puppets the people can choose from. The distinction is only made to influence the people of the west that have no logical and rational thinking, that divide the world in good and bad and people like Snyder telling them what is good and what is bad. People in general want to be good and hence they attach themselves to those pretending they are on the good side. It is pathetic. People in the west in general have no clue on how it is to live in countries like China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, Libya (when Ghadafi was still in charge). Most people don't mind who is in charge. It is always a minority that wants change. But change doesn't benefit the majority most of the times as history clearly has proven.
Funny you bring up the concept of a majority since a majority of Ukrainians want Putin's army to leave. And yes, I know that politics in nations like the USA is often deeply corrupt with moneyed people getting what they want. Yet that does not change the facts about Ukrainians having honest elections and not wanting Russian oppression to replace that.
Also 1 of the few ways to challenge at least some of the wealth in politics is by repeatedly getting people out there elected who will challenge it.

I am a conservative America-first republican, but I do not agree with the isolationists who don’t see that Putin must be stopped.
I disagree with:
1. The notion that Russia had to invade Ukraine to defend itself from NATO aggression. NATO aggression is a pretext similar to the kind Hitler used to invade Poland.
2. The Democratic strategy of dragging a war on. Purposely not winning so it can cost the most money possible. China is hoping that we weaken and deplete ourselves.
What we should have done and should do now is to move decisively to kick Putin out of Ukraine militarily and with financial levers.
We cannot ever afford to be in a position that we are intimidated or steered by any foreign threat of nuclear war. If we do that, we are puppets looking to become the imprisoned.
Whether Trump wants Ukraine to lose and wants a favor from Putin is an irresponsible and untenable accusation.
Global warming? There is a great amount unproven science as to the mechanism of global warming. As to the economics and science of going to all electric vehicles, the electric generation infrastructure is way behind such an ambitious move. We are producing carbon by producing electricity because the “science” has discouraged hydro-electric and nuclear power production. Thank you to “science.” We could improve carbon emissions and our economic viability for years to come by manufacturing the most efficient hybrid vehicles possible and getting safe nuclear power plants into production.
Professor Snyder, this has nothing to do with “us and them” or that “Ukraine is fighting for us.” it is about having a hostile Ukraine in control of Crimea, limiting Russian access to the Northern Black Sea and access to the Sea of Azov and hence passage to and from the Don River Delta and hence to the Caspian Sea, via the Volga-Don Canal, in addition to having a potential Nato Naval base in Sevastopol.
So that will not happen as “blood has been spent over this territory from 1568 - 1878” during the Ottoman, Russian, and Crimean Khanate wars and, more recently, 1918-1922 and the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.
It has nothing to do with Russia attempting to reconstitute its Empire and recover Ukrainian and the Baltic States or Central Asian Republics.
So you are overpaying your hand as usual.
If Cuba attempted to recover Guantanamo Bay from the US and then handed the base over to Russia and China, what do you think would happen?
Ukraine had minimal contact or influence in Crimea and had no Black Sea Coast until the Russian Empire and the Bolsheviks put Ukraine together as a State; before that, there was the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Crimean Khanate, and the Zaporzhzian Cossack Host, Ottomans, and the Russian Empire.
Ukraine never existed until 1922, and before that, the short-lived Ukrainian Peoples Republic 1918-1921 was never recognized at the Treaty of Versailles.
So, all the prefixing of the word Ukraine to all these multi-ethnic groups, like the Cossacks, Tatars, Rutherans, Polish, Hungarians, and Bressarabians, is a false narrative.
“Ukrainian Cossacks did not assist in lifting the 2nd siege of Vienna”; it was the Zaporizhzian Cossack Sich that was involved, neither Polish, Lithuanian, nor Russian.
Ukraine never existed during that period.
Polish East Galicia, Volhynia, Rutheran Transcarpathia, Beressarabia, and all the Black Sea Cities established by Catherine the Great were added to the Ukrainian SSR.
I went through your Origins of Ukraine Series and found it Weak and misleading.
The Vanagans from the Nordic Countries had established Trading routes from the Baltic to the Byzantium Empire using the Volga, Dinpro, and Volkhov Rivers.
The Vanagon Cheiftan Rurik established Novgorod, an important Trading City of the Vanagans, and the first known reference was in 852.
In 882, Rurik's successor, Oleg of Novgorod, conquered Kyiv and founded the state of Kievan Rus. Novgorod's size, as well as its political, economic, and cultural influence, made it the second most important city in Kievan Rus.
This is contrary to your lectures, where you skip these essential parts of the History of the region
We understand your motives here in attempting to bring legitimacy to Ukrainian claims to these territories.
Ukrainians are not direct descendants of the Kievan Rus, as they disappeared after the Mongol Golden Horde conquered the region.
The Ukrainians are predominantly ethically Polish Lithuanian Slavs.
Cossacks are ethnically remains of the Khazars, which are the remains of the Mongol Golden Horde.
Tatars are not Eastern Slavic peoples but are Turkic-speaking Muslims.
And no, the more comprehensive distribution of Cossack tribes across the Eurasian, the Causcus regions and the Russian Federation are not Ukrainian, as Zallenskyy and yourself depict.

Ukraine should never have fought this war as the Minsk Agreements were signed by Ukraine but never implemented; they used it to gain time to rearm.
Then, they stated that the Lease on the Sevastopol base would end in 2025 and mentioned Nato Membership. Then, they disposed of their elected leader in 2014, and that set off a series of events that culminated in the loss of Crimea, the Donbas, Southern Kherson and Southern Zaporizhzia.
However, this commentary has nothing to do with the war. It is directed at Professor Snyder, who selectively uses History to advance his agenda. By the way, he has been paid to rewrite the History of Ukraine in the vision of Zallenskyy.
Our go-to Historical references for Central Europe and Ukraine are the books by Paul Robert Magosci, an American Professor at the University of Washington, and at the Monk Center at the University of Toronto.
Syndey never uses any reference material, demographic maps, linguistic, ethnic, religious trends, or industrial production figures over time and just waves his hand around and reads from his notes.
Mogosci uses Maps and Charts covering Central Europe from the 5th century to 1989.
So, if you want to learn about the region, it is best to use Mogosci’s reference works.
Professor Snyder is more like a Political Commissar than a historian, very much in the vein of Nikita Khrushchev.

Prof Snyder is very popular and liked person here in Poland. He's even speaking quite decent Polish. Very bright, nice and open-minded person with deeply understanding of the nuances of that whole weird "mitteleuropa" mish - mash often even better than the locals themselves.
