This is a great, monstrous, epic piece of music. It doesn't get much better than this. I knew you would enjoy this, dude! The sound quality is much improved over the original recording on _Relayer._ You hear every nuance here. And listen to the that thunderous applause at the end! I'm sure everybody were on their feet as well. Awesome reaction, JP!

This is the Yes song I play to Rush fans to shut them up 😄
But seriously, people forget just how huge Yes were in 1976 (when this live GOD was recorded), and regards their playing, I think that 1976 tour was 'peak' Yes. When hearing the studio Relayer version of Gates, some folk dismiss (particularly the 'battle' section) as a 'good jam'. What the Yesshows live version reveals is that GOD wasn't a 'good jam session' but was a composition composed to be played throughout as it was on Relayer. This live version is incredible.
    Cheers Justin. Nice one 👍

I think Gates of delirium might have been ahead of its time. Yes the recording is better here, but all these years later you can fully appreciate what these guys were doing. Putting this album out after tales was a big contrast. Plus, when it came out it wasn't made clear that with this piece they were actually going to depict war through music. Not exactly a subject that would want to Make You dance. In retrospect, and with the understanding of what they were trying to accomplish, this piece , and the execution of it , really is remarkable.

Sounded better than I remembered - can I have my record back - :o -- no worries, if I wanted to listen to this I still have a remastered cd of it. Speaking of which, with your typical remastered & expanded cd reissues they normal add a plethora of extra tracks -- that usually have little value and are not needed, but here was a chance to put in something really worth adding like a live version of Sound Chaser and To Be Over. But of course NO. Anyway, I hope now you will agree that TGoD is shoulder to shoulder with Yes' other great works like CttE, Awaken, Heart of the Sunrise, some of Tales... Thanks Justin. P.S. I still prefer the atmosphere that the studio recording has of this track. With the live recording you're enjoying the virtuosity of the musicians, with the studio recording you're transported to some far away wonderful place.

I legit believe that Squire's bass sounds better here than on the original studio recording, which is crazy. Sure, this is missing the balance of the backing vocals, and some of the crazy percussion and sound effects during the "battle" scene", but in certain ways I've always considered it superior to the original.

This is a real showcase performance of this song. Jon's voice overall sounds less high pitched than in earlier years. I think he must have expended a lot of hard work and time training his voice to consciously pitch down slightly. He has to be commended for that, can't be easy without going out of tune. But they are all awesome here.
That said, the most enjoyable performance for me, along with Ritual and Close to Edge (the Big Three trilogy), is off the Yes Symphonic 2001 concert with orchestra. That whole concert has it all from performance, sound and visuals to make it an excellent experience.
I know some will disagree but I recommend rejoining the Yes journey after Anderson and Howe rejoined and look at the Trevor Rabin era as a separate aside journey for another time. Not that Rabin is not a good guitarist but a his forte is as a straight rock guitarist with all the tricks. He's spectacular but somehow it doesn't really suit Yes's more jazz/classical leaning style and ethos. Just my opinion. I think the Yes purists might agree though.

As a rule, Yes in the 70's usually *always* came off better in a live setting. Re: the 'way better recording', I wonder if this show was recorded by a pro team for an FM broadcast, rather than Yes' usual blundering live crew. Cobo Hall IS one of Yes' better known 70's bootlegs. It does also benefitting from missing that 50 tons of metallic percussion, fuzz and other "atmosphere". Patrick and Alan definitely benefit, although Steve still has a pretty dry, shrill tone on his Tele. That's probably my one complaint about this track. But yeah, many fans consider this to be the definitive version of this song. And good news, JP -- "Ritual" from this album taken from the same show. 😎

Steve Wilson remixed the classic albums a few years back and the were all good, especially Relayer but really it would have made more sense if he had remixed Yesshows and Yessongs. I'm sure both of those records could sound fantastic if he remixed them. All the performances are great and deserve a remix (Gates and Ritual notwhithstanding)

I knew you'd like it better if only you'd listen to Gates again. Observation: I think sometimes when you've done YES reactions & have read that there were complaints some of the band members voiced about the recording your mind zeros in on that criticism & that's what you're constantly listening for is those imperfections. When I listen to the original recording, I never ask myself "how this could have been done better* since I'm locked in on how Chris Squire is guiding the mood throughout the journey
I think listening to these Chris Squire-mixed live recordings says a lot about the influence Chris had on Eddy Offord when he was mixing YES' recordings during their Uber Classic Period (The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge). Eddy once said that the key to his results was giving the musicians what they wanted to hear. Heck, we already know from Bruford how much time Chis spent at the soundboard. I think it might be fair to say that the mix on those three amazing albums essentially satisfied the ear of Chris Squire, who not only wanted to hear his own contributions in the mix, but he also had a sense of placement of all the contributors against his bass line (most especially with Bruford's drumming)
I dunno what happened when Gates was recorded, cuz it sounds as if Chris might have under-participated in the mixing of the song, perhaps in deference to the other outstanding musicians in the band, having become shy about his former domination of the band's final output

I can't think of a satisfactory reason as to why GoD and Ritual come across so much better on this album than the other tracks. One thing is that the choices from 1977/78 don't really come across well live for me. Parallels is the nearest to being a great live track, but GFTO, TAAW, Wonderous Stories and Don't Kill the Whale just aren't meaty enough on stage, sounding feeble by comparison. Maybe it's the recording quality of those tracks or maybe it's just because they're not 'epics' that they just lack impact. The studio versions are all wonderful, so what went wrong? If the album had started with Parallels then included Awaken and On the Silent Wings of Freedom (both taken from 1977) with maybe Turn of the Century from 1977 plus the two epics it would have been a much better album. Having said that, Squire had a go at it when nobody else was interested in making the effort and eventually it was the record company who said 'well we have to put something out to make some cash, what do we have?" and this was all they had lying around.

    YUCK ! Howe's that for a different perspective? 😝
I can't stand this version of that song, Cowboy Steve completely ruins this masterpiece by ad-libbing and pussyfooting through his solos to the point I have to shut it off. Over the years I noticed that about him, it became increasingly problematic, his penchant for improvisation, rather than sticking to the script so to speak, often veered way too far off course, while every other band mate is busting their asses, there's Howe sliding and sneaking around his hard parts, and smiling at you like
    "isn't it GREAT?!"
Umm NO BRO not so much.
A little creativity is perfectly fine don't get me wrong, but like I said, he's gotten away with murdering these excellent compositions way too much. Another reason I finally strolled away from the live performances over the years. He was once my number one guitar muse but he became a grumpy bitter old cuss,, and barked at me once when I stopped him to say Hi and Thank You for the music. My Dad called him pickle puss when I took him to see Yes In concert LoL I'll never forget that 😅
I love the legacy of Steves gift, but the story turned sour. Ask Jon 😉
