The one thing in heavy weather people need to watch out for when solo sailing . Is the rolling jib getting snagged in the pulpit when the wind unexpectedly picks up. The sail fills up and the boat comes under power, often causing the boat to broach. Having to go on deck and untangle the jib in high wind with the boat listing is no joke when your on your own. Very scary.
Well done to you for both across Biscay and Atlantic, was there one I have missed after Biscay to the Caneries, keep up the good work, best regards Tony
Thanks Ed … nice little vid …. I’m watching from Sydney and at a number of points I thought I detected an Aussie twang or two but there’s a lot more Brit than Aussie in that accent. I was happily vindicated when the Aussie flag made a celebrity appearance at the end. Good luck and I shall follow you with interest. 👍
It’s a great question and inevitably a controversial one! I approach sleep based on where I am - short 20 min naps inshore or near the coast / shipping lanes. Longer rests offshore. In all cases the AIS alarm is set loudly and I have multiple phones/alarms in case I miss one!
Your boat's not so small. 'Constant vigillance' just as well all times, lots of boats, yachts, fishing boats, dont have AIS. You only found that liferaft with keeping a good lookout. Have some good times in the Caribbean.
Certainly there’s the true adventures in the 20’ range, but Telemachus is always the smallest (and classiest) boat in any anchorage so far! Perhaps that says more about modern yachts’ LOA.
Me and my wife went through the bay of biscay on a cruise liner and no word of a lie the water was so rough the ship took on a 60 degree list and cos we now have a yacht of our own and because weve experienced the bay of biscay our selves we wont be sailing through these waters.
That makes sense! It’s all each person’s risk tolerance and management, particularly when they have responsibility for their crew. Having said that, weather forecasting is getting much better - where a cruise ship must brave rough weather to keep a schedule, it’s always ok to wait for better weather on a private yacht. I know friends who had to motor the entire Biscay is flat calm seas!
There's lots of TH-cam sailors but big questions unanswered. How do you dodge all those island fees and ripoffs? Do you steam on a course when you're asleep? Do commercial ships routinely pass you good travel notices? Does dry salt turn into a nightmare? Are marinas sometimes affordable? Do countries demand stupid things like passports? Do you run into harassment when you fetch water and food ashore?
@scottlamb--w9i My comment is far in the future from yours ( mine is 9 months later than yours...Oct 2024) but I wanted to share something perhaps relevant or thought provoking to you. YT recommended this channel to me recently as I, like you, follow several other 'sailing' channels. That said, your comment " I have no interest in your channel at all" to Mr Beard (just FYI .. I don't know him .. nor any stake in this) has struck me as the one of the most rude, most unnecessary comments I've come across on YT. I wonder to myself why would anyone even post that? Especially on a channel's first video? Your comment was not only rude but short-sighted given this was an early post for this channel and who know what other things/sailing destinations were to follow. Perhaps you were off your meds on that day but Mr Lamb, as someone who has now seen quite a few of this channels posts since recommended to my by YT, I am glad i subscribed. Mr Lamb .. do better. I hope that in nine months since your unnecessary comment (you could just have not subscribed and gone away..???), your overtly obvious curmudgeonly manners have been replaced by civility and politeness.
Great video, look forward to catching up with the rest Ed. Lovely boat.

Great video Ed, looking forward to see more, well done!❤
Lovely video, have a great journey!
Thanks for gret video.
Can yoy please tell - what is your nice 35' boat model and year of built? She is from Sweden?
Excellent job. Very inspirational. Thanks 🙏

Hi Tony, apologies - the rest of this trip is a bit of a random assortment of footage. I’ll try edit together some more!
Hi Ed. Could you tell me about the electronic chart shown on your laptop? What is it and how do you install it? Loving your videos.
Great video Ed, was good to bump into you at paradise beach club in Carriacou - hope you're still doing well!
Thanks, you too!
Great to see another Nicholson 35! Greatings from Lady Blue #35/122. Cheers!
Fair seas Lady Blue!

Nice video mate. well done crossing Biscay alone. Just watched the Atlantic crossing video - really enjoyed it. Fair winds!
Thanks a lot!
Exciting video, nicely done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Nicholson 35 is a perfect cruiser for long ocean passages. I imagine thats exactly what it was build for. Shouldn't have any problems there.
A small boat 35 foot?
Great respect for solo sailors
What is the music you are using in this video? Really like the instrumental versions here.
Bravo! We’ll done
It’s an achievement ⛵️
You are flying a blue Ensign. How come?
Good question! I’ve received the warrant to fly the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s blue ensign
WOW Sailor happy B day,
Great work….. isn’t it rewarding doing a solo sailing passage.
Great job! what did you do about sleep shifts? I'm heading the same way solo this year and interested in other folks experiences. Thanks,

You don't sound like an Aussie... Nice sail...

Can you do it on a 22ft boat? Other youtubers do it on 22ft boat.
Haha not me, I’m not that hardcore! I think the Atlantic record is 5ft…
I would not call a 35' boat small by any means.

N35, not so small. But nice enough.
👏 Bravo

Where'd you start?
Cowes, then Plymouth and Falmouth before the crossing!

I love sailing videos but not this one consider not everyone knows where biscay is I have no interest at all in your video.
There’s lots of other TH-camrs with great sailing content. Hope you find what interests you! 🙂
Always find sailing videos covering Biscay crossing very interesting
You are watching this on your phone or computer. Pro tip. Go to Google and type "where is the Bay of Biscay".
