      This Hurdy isnt medieval. Medieval Hurdy gurdys are Organistrum, Chiffonia and some types of rebec-vielle.

    Electronic amplification greatly changes the tonal quality of the Vielle a Roue. It's only vaguely reminiscent of a medieval instrument, which is OK, but I think the most impressive way to hear the Hurdy Gurdy is in a hall or or old church without electronic amplification. Hearing it performed on a street with a competent singer is completely different, but gives you a more earthy perception of the drones vs. the melody strings.
    Played by a quietly crackling campfire, it is even more haunting and completely mesmerizing. I simply adore this instrument.

    I saw him about 15 years ago at a loop festival. He did similar stuff like this, but used a loop machine to bring more layers to his music. I remember I was just standing there hardly being able to grasp what was happening in front of me. This guy is from another planet...

    So today I was looking at The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades (don't ask) and there was an etching from around 1200 of a guy on a hurdy gurdy playing with a bagpipe and horn player. I realized I had no idea what a hurdy gurdy was! Glad you posted this. It's a very cool looking ax actually! Seems like it could become indispensable to movie soundtrack composers.

    Can someone tell me how this hurdy gurdy sounds so deeper on this video than it does on the other video of him? Can you mute certain string or add lower strings?

    • @aCentralFolque
      @aCentralFolque  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mat, it's not only the strings he uses (tonality) for the drones and melody but also the type sound recording when we filmed.
      On this video the sound source was taken directly from the mixing desk; the other video was recorded from the camera's inbuilt microphone, so the sound is weaker.

    They call this a "folk instrument?". What folk could afford it nor have time to learn to play it? They must have been a lot simpler in medieval times.

    • @baskoning9896
      @baskoning9896 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This instrument is verrry old, when it first arrived in 900, everybody was very pleased with it. But after a while, like the sound of bagpipes: you 'know' the sound. Violins have the same: if you have heard a few hours of violin, you go: 'ok, enough with the violins already'. The sound is always 'the same' thing: drones, violin sound on top, and thats it. Because it was a one-man instrument, mostly played in inns and such, and because the rich bastards have moved on to more 'exciting' instruments like the pipe-organs in churches to name one, it slowly became 'the poor mans instrument'. Not that a poor man owned such an expensive instrument: but only poor people would listen to it, in the pubs. that was back around 1500 if I am not mistaken. Later there was a bit of a revival, and now the instrument is appreciated a fair bit again in many countries.
