HRE history is so complex and layered. Hope Paradox in the future gives Strugle-esque mechanics for the investiture controversy, Guelphs and Ghibellines et Centera.
@@thebetterbutter709 The recent dev diary has put my hopes up a lot. While there is a lot to be done, I think it sets the right example for how we as vassals should interact with our liege and how we as lieges should interact with our vassals. I'm excited to see where they go with the regent mechanic too
The ruler of Pisa in 1063 was Giovanni Orlandi, so it’s probable he was in 1066 too. I included him in my mod “Italia Reborn”, as well as the title of margrave for Matilda (in my mod Matilde) and Alberto Azzo.
There's a lot of alternate history potential with Matilda and her life. Her descendants had she obtained any could have probably united Italy many centuries before the House of Savoy did in our history.
Michelangelo actually claimed descendancy from her (Renaissance information of Medieval Italian history was very muddled, they might have thought her adopted son was her real one). Problem is that neither of her marriages worked out. Godfrey was eventually a supporter of the HRE, and Welf was much younger than she was.
Cinecitta better stop with working on the billionth comedy on a man with a wife he hates who tries to bang a younger woman and start working on a movie on Matilda fr.
Making Matilda married at start of 1066 would me her campaign harder. (Did her marriage to the hunchback take place before Sept 15 of 1066?). You would either have to get chummy enough with the Pope to get a divorce before you get a son or murder your character’s first husband. Edit: according to Wikipedia, the betrothed didn’t officially become married until 1069. The betrothal was valid during campaign start.
@@Apollo1989V I've not consciously noticed, I barely ever play the 1066 start and when I do it's usually as either her or Robert (Sicily). Also don't remember his name anyway but I do think it's usually one of two characters she marries, so it could be him
A few corrections, the city you show when mentioning Este is actually Padua. And while indeed the Este married into the Habsburg the biggest chunk of North East Italy was under Austria because Napoleon partitioned with them the land of the republic of Venice in the treaty of Campoformio right after the first coalition war. Something the "restorationists" of the Congress of Vienna didn't bother to restore. Other than that good video, pre renaissance northern Italy is often overlooked.
Este is also the origins of the Guelphs who through their cadet branch the House of Hanover ruled Great Britain until the death of queen Victoria in 1901.
The only reason I like playing as her is because I literally made the Italian Empire just because the pope liked her also now I'm in the 1240s as her great great great grandson who has braids because I married into the Byzantines who were half Nubian
I love these videos! One of my favorite recent playthroughs was actually as Robert the Fox (a video on the CK3 Normans would be cool), and I married Matilda so my son inherited Sicily and all of her lands.
You have to wonder if she cared about preserving her estate after her death. Waiting until 44 to try for another child is crazy. Unless she was celibate, maybe she always had fertility issues.
Perhaps the biggest problem with marrying as a ruling woman at the time was that there’s potential for your husband to attempt to claim rulership and overthrow you. This happened sometimes with men, as seen with Isabella of France and Catherine the Great, but since men were seen as better for ruling (less chance of dying in childbirth + better chance of leading the military) then it would more likely happen to women. Matilda needed a husband who was both a collaborator/loyal and also someone from a successful family and status.
The house of Canossa’s motto and arms you mentioned are the motto and arms of the Canossa of Verona. The relationship beetween the house of Canossa of Lucca and the house of Canossa of Verona is disputed.
Godfrey the hunchback dying isn’t that considering that his heir is Godefroy of Bouillon, the same man who would become the first king of Jerusalem and this man also appears in CK3 in Boulogne where his father lives.
Maybe they changed it but on my last Matilda playthrough, an event fired to immediately betrothe you to Gottfried and you have several options to choose from, including murdering him. Which you obviously do, who wants hunchbacked heirs?
I still think it’s silly. Their empires were destroy all because the elders couldn’t inherit the empire and one kingdom while his siblings inherited the other kingdoms in support of the empire, in honor of their fathers
I tried that once. I conquered as Louis the Younger of Italy, but no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the Pope to like me enough. I did have a Matilda campaign where I won the HRE crown.
I personally *hate* Matilda because whenever I played Apulia (I like playing Apulia for funzies) she would always F things up and ruin my northern borders 😠💢

That would be cool
hopefully the new changes to vassal stances serves as a beginning to this
@@thebetterbutter709 I can see the tours being used for the journey to Canossa in the future as well.
@@theicepickthatkilledtrotsk658 I mentioned that in the forum on the dev diary about tours.

Fun fact! In Italy, we have a say: "Andare a Canossa" (Roughly translated as "Going to Canossa") which means basically the same as "Gang nach Canossa"

Wow, amazing work!
Louis was technically emperor, but the title meant little. His uncles and brother wouldn’t take orders from him.
Yes, he did not have power over West Francia or East Francia after the treaties separating the realm
Wonderful series, a series on the maritime Republics of Venice, Genoa, Pisa, and Amalfi would be fun too
Thank you! Good idea :)
@@historyinbits Not only the main four but also the other Maritime Repuclics, like Ancona, Ragusa, Nizza, Gaeta, etc.
Matilda being single at start is almost certainly a form of fan service :)
She was in real life tho

she was the 1st character i used in ck2 and 3 thanks bro you very helpful and gave me more ideas on playing her in the game

How or why a movie about Matilda has not been made is a mystery.
A whole series!

She appears in a play by Pirandello "Enrico Quarto' - Henry the Fourth (HRE) Pirandello is the greatest modern Italian dramatist.

With the new dlc coming up, Matilda’s marriage will be addressed via an in game event.

I realise we showed Padua, but it was a building built by the dynasty :)

Just a funny history note: The Savoyards would continue to name their children Amadeus for 700 years
Can you do a Bohemond video? His journey to a Crusader State. I love that dude

Forming CK3 HREs based on Italy not Germany would make more sense given the imperial title derived from holding Italy.

Why do you keep referring to the Emperors as Kings?
They were German Kings until the Pope officially declared them Emperors
Well they are fixing Matilda with events in the new patch
