I really appreciate you using that Rod Serling interview clip. People love to pretend that these are new issues when they have been issues for decades. He was ahead of his time. Also, I’m like you. It drives me crazy to see people completely miss the point of movies like Fight Club or Taxi Driver. And to boot, let’s add Wolf of Wall Street and Scarface to that list of commonly misinterpreted movies as well. Great video of course.

I dont like the phrase "ahead of there time" when used with people progressive ideals. Rod was OF his time. People didn't just start having empathy, racism wasnt ever "okay" because people "didn't know better". Abolitionists have been saying that message in the western world for hundreds of years, other philosophers have been teaching it for thousands of years before that. If people 50 years ago were too lazy to seek out teachings or to engage with different cultures than there own (the best prescription against hate), then there just as much to blame as people today who believe everything info wars tells them and who never travel outside of there basements. Pop culture has always been full of hate, and sexism, and stupidity, and it always will be. Its always our responsibility to seek out true experience and not just go along with said pop culture.

TheBd62- That’s fair. I guess I was meaning it more to mean that he was willing to take a stand during a time when most people in entertainment weren’t willing to take one. He wasn’t the only one obviously, but the way he puts it is just to perfect and resonates even today.
If someone thinks the original Twilight Zone was subtle then they clearly didn't pay attention. There's an episode about the dangers of gambling addiction. It ends with the lead character pretty much being murdered by a slot machine.
Yeah!! and the one that its message was pretty much how beauty can be different and that it can be ok if different, maybe someone's ugly is someone else's beauty. I think that was a great episode.
Or the one about the dangers of obsessing over the past and by extent, film/media as an escape from reality. It ends with the protagonist literally being trapped in an ever-running movie.

It is pretty widely known if you watch the show that a lot of the values in twilight zone aren’t necessarily just political but rather handling the subject of temptation or other sinful deeds in the Bible as Rob made it obvious in a few episodes where the main character talks to God and fucking unleashes Satan by mistake because he sounded cool. In fact a lot of these newer episodes like traveler are based off trying to retell the values we already had told to us which might be why the Shell isn’t doing so well with older fans.

Man, You made the point I've been wanting to make for a long time. Being blunt is sometimes an important tool to be able to cut through the fog of lack of experience and/or confusion, even outright resistance from the viewer's worldview. (I'm saying this as someone who oftentimes needed the lessons a blunt piece of media taught me)
Yeah. I love subtlety and nuance. They can bring out the depth and thought-provoking ideas that bluntness cannot. But subtlety can be extremely open to interpretation and for those who lack the framework to understand the work they can easily interpret things the opposite from their intent

Sometimes clear messaging is more effective at transmitting a message. Not everything needs to have the density of The Wire. Simple parables can be really impactful in ways that more complicated stories are unable be. Sometimes subtlety and nuance comes across as just obfuscation. It depends on the message the creator intends.
Blunt narratives can also be powerful thinking tools by simplifying more complex ideas into a simple story that is emotionally effective.
I did not even know this show was remade for 2019 audiences, good job on advertising it guys, I see so many get rich ads in TH-cam, instead they could be advertising good stuff like this

Yeah I loved this show. I grew up with the original twilight zone. I literally used to marathon till I fell asleep every night. That was NOT a subtle show. What people seem to mistake for subtlety in episodes like "Monsters are Due on Maple Street" is actually just Rod trying to get by themes that were prohibited in his era. In his early television play work, he tried to directly address issue like discrimination and racial violence and they shut him down. That's why he made TZ in the first place. If Rod was a new creator in the modern day, I can guarantee that his creations would be far more blunt and less subtle than these film bros are prepared for. Hell maybe even more blunt than Jordan Peele himself.

This reminds me of when I saw some theatre fans critique lyric changes made to the show Hadestown. I'd noticed some of them when I saw it, but overall the performances were high quality and I thought the more blunt lyrics made the message clearer to a wider audience. Personally I found that to be more important. Being subtle about climate change and the exploitative nature of capitalism in 2019 wouldn't have been the right move.
@@NyJoanzy You can find both versions of the songs on TH-cam, and I'm sure if you google it you'll find lyric comparisons. I could hear the difference for some of the songs, but the visuals would probably help.
Majority of the Godzilla fandom really fits that last chart "I wanna ignore the message" like "I just watch this for the monsters".
To give them (and me?) a little bit of slack there, a lot of Godzilla movies were made with that sort of mindset in mind or are just shlock in their own right. Like, Godzilla vs Gigan and Invasion of Astro-Monster are just entertaining shlock and had no intent of being otherwise! The new American movies are kind of a good example of this, since the only thing they have to say in the end is "ARMY GUD SUPPORT OUR TROOPS." You could even poke fun at 2014 literally having a character who just wants to watch monsters fight.
But that doesn't change that the best ones, the original 1954 Gojira and Shin Gojira, do have a lot to say (especially Shin Gojira). And there are others (where the arguable is mostly just that don't really do much work for that), like tangentially related Mothra (1961) being about capitalism's exploitation and colonialism/imperialism. And of course we have Godzilla vs The Smog Monster, but that movie is high as a kite (which is why it's the best of the Showa sequels). The Urobuchi trilogy also gives a damn good try, even if the results don't really work as well as they could.

The biggest surprise for me was how much smoke Rod Serling's cigarette produced in that excellent interview clip.

As a black person, thank you so much for talking about Replay. Even as someone who was already aware of all the social issues being discussed in that episode, I still found it deeply disturbing. It was late at night when I finished watching it, and I was starving, so I decided to go over to my parents' place (which was about two houses down from my apartment) to grab some pasta sauce to make spaghetti.
As I was trying to unlock the door, (my night vision is trash and my parents never have their porch lights on), I happened to glance across the street and noticed a tall old white man standing on the porch of the house across the street, smoking. He was glaring at me threateningly, like he assumed I was breaking in. It only took me a minute or two to get my key in the door and get in, but he stood there glaring at me the entire time.
When I came back outside with my spaghetti sauce five minutes later, he was gone. I've lived in that neighbourhood for ten years, I know the people who live in that house, and I have never seen that man before. And I have never seen him again since.
Wow... that's really terrifying, and as someone trying to empathize as best as I can (I am a lilly white woman who a mixture of Latina and white), so incredibly demeaning! I mean...here you were, just getting spaghetti sauce from your own parents' home, being treated like a common criminal, all because of the color of your skin! When, if it had been anyone else, that same person wouldn't have thought twice about it! I am so sorry that happened! I am so glad that, at the very least, you never saw him again! Even still, though...what a terrible thing to have had happen! You would think that in the 21st century we would be over this crap by now...but even still, it happens!
How can you see at night on the other side of the street that someone looks treatening at you? If that is the worst that happend to you i wander why you share that. I love many of the Anti-fascist themes present in Twilight Zone episodes. Rod also seemed to be above influence from Red Scare propaganda as well.

I felt like 'Blurry Man' was a spiritual sequel-esque episode in the same vein as 'He Lives'. In that episode a mysterious shadowy figure manipulates the hatred of a young political activist played by Dennis Hopper and is shown to be a certain evil dictator who asserts that he will never be dead as long as hatred exists. I think Blurry Man had a similar message in that creative original work will express the spirit of great creators who came before the current ones. It was a phenomenal episode and another reason to keep this new series going!

Saying something like Twilight Zone or Star Trek is being 'too preachy' is like running into a stop sign and saying that you didn't see it. You didn't just miss it, you went out of your way to show that you deliberately missed the entire point.

I was always confused about why the old series episode “He’s Alive” was so badly received. The message of it haunted me when I first saw it as a kid, and it feels way more relevant now.
Truthfully it was because people who liked the nazis hated it. Like, out of every Twilight Zone episode, He's Alive had the most angry letters sent in response
Ooh ooh, I like the thesis here; I've definitely grown a little tired as of late of people championing subtlety as the defining quality in a work's messaging. I'm largely unfamiliar with The Twilight Zone (I watched a Christmas episode of the old show and that's basically it) but this video got me interested in both the old and new versions.
This essay and indeed the recent series are so much more timely now
Finally, almost nobody on TH-cam liked this new reboot, but I believe that this is one of the best reboots so far. The show is at it's best when t's original, doesn't copy/paste from past episodes and leans into surreal horror.
Fables, fairy tales and myths often frighten people with their overt messages. But, as you say - that's kind of the point. And people are not comfortable about being challenged - they want to be reinforced. But wisdom grows from questioning. Even if it's something as simple as making a two-column list: 'Here's what I believe' and 'Here's why I believe it' could be helpful in growing and recognizing the faults in our belief systems. But, how many of us are willing to do that? I remember watching the old Twilight Zone episodes as a kid - and they generally either frightened me or made me very sad. And that's okay, because that meant that the story had made its point - even to a child. As we grow older, we tend to resist change, but change is inevitable. And empathy is putting yourself into someone else's shoes, which in turn, helps us to grow. That's what these stories tell us: 'Be aware and open to change' and 'Try to feel what this person is feeling'. I'm not putting this all as well as I'd like, but hopefully, you get my drift.
I've found that there are three kinds of criticism:
1} This should have been better than it was
2} This should have been other than it was
3) This is pointless because it's not about me me me
I find the first one, understanding what a piece of art is trying to say and pointing out how it could have said it better is usually the most valid, or at least the most constructive, criticism. Though sometimes, what the piece of art is saying is just a bunch of crap, but that's a different kind of criticism, more a disagreement with the message than with the way that message is conveyed.
What's interesting about the near-constant complaint about "woke" culture, and how that complaint so often dovetails with how "on the nose," it is, is that it's ultimately the second type of criticism disguising itself as the first. In other words, it uses objective examination of the art to trojan-horse purely subjective opinions about the art's message.
And why? Because it's an underhanded way of reframing one's indefensible objections to wokeness as perfectly defensible objections to art as propaganda. In a wider sense, this applies to literally all criticism of wokeness. Whenever someone complains about how out of control and indiscriminate it is, which is sometimes true, the much subtler subtext is that it shouldn't exist at all, or at least, not as criticism of anything *I* believe or do. This is why I always take "Too woke" comments with a massive grain of salt. Nine times out of ten, it's not a criticism of thoughtless or unjust actions of accusations in the name of wokeness, it's a criticism of the basic idea of wokeness itself.

Twilight Zone is what Black Mirror wanted to be
This manages to almost exactly encapsulate how I went from not being able to enjoy unsubtle media to finding it uniquely challenging.
I think there's something to the solving aspect of subtle media that's fun and engaging, but it's taking some of your focus into just picking apart the text of a work even if it's not difficult to do.
With the unsubtle stuff what the audience is usually trained to look for is just handed to you so it can feel cheap by contrast since you already know what you want to do and can't, but over time I figured out that engaging it with "what does it say that the creator felt the need to make this now," or "is there possible a way to misinterpret this" or the like can help turn that feeling on its head.
The entire bit about "Rewind" is more poignant than ever, and standing proof that some people just never/will never learn.
I feel like anything that is 'political' these days get bashed by the same bros you're talking about. I'm a Doctor Who fan. Have you seen the Rotten Tomato score for this season??? 6%! It's getting a critic rating of 80% and yet, the 'fans' are giving it 6%? Most of the comments are now it's become "political". Doctor Who was ALWAYS political! O_O It's like the idiots didn't know they were watching political commentary until a woman was given the role. Rant over.

I mean the episodes are just really bad though. I agree Doctor Who has always been political but now it’s just pleading its case to the choir. Seriously who is watching Doctor Who and doesn’t know the emergency that is global warming? I guess my point is that it’s not really pushing a view that isn’t already supported. Also the writing, dialogue, and plot are bad and inconsistent.

Yeah, I have often noted that people complaining about a lack of subtility often just wish to ignore the message.
If you are unable to see the massage in subtile media you are idiotic.
But unsubtile media can be good, but most the time they cut the storytelling part short. Never secrifice the story Story for the massage, that is bad television.
I am stunned by how true Rod Serling's words still are.

That’s one series that got so much hate, and for no reason at all. It’s truly a great series, and is completely unapologetic too.
This episode is really welcome, especially after the newest episodes of Dr Who. There's some real parallels between the two shows, the most recent seasons of Who actually taking time to sit you down and tell you the meaning behind their stories has been a difficult thing to accept as an audience member but having this mediation on the value of the authors right to expression and understanding what detractors of the show truly desire is really enlightening. Thank you for ongoing amazing work. X
Not that I don't appreciate the greater incorporation of real life social issues in Dr. Who, but I just wished more of the episodes integrated them into the actual physical conflict more. The Rosa Parks episode did it pretty well, but the other ones seemed to just push them into character subplots that sometimes never even got a proper resolution.
The problem I had with the new version wasn't that it was too "blunt". Rather, that it makes it clear that "this is the message, this is what you should take away, this is it." I agree with the message of every episode, which left the message very boring. There's just not much to play with after the message is given. What I would have liked to see is the false ending used to explore the topic beyond just what was given in the episode. Like, throw in some variable that nobody would normally associate with the maxim and play with it to get people to think.
After watching this first season, I will never watch it again, and I can boil down each episode to "Character A does X to achieve Y but some situation happens, and the message is thus." I can't hold conversations with friends over that. It's too shallow in its messaging and writing to be very interesting. Like a dish I'd eat if it was in front of me but not order again, the 2019 incarnation of The Twilight Zone was interesting, but it won't go on my rewatch list.

This video makes a great point on, for instance, what's been happenning with videogames such as Tonight We Riot, that are very explicit in their message of anticapitalism and labor organization in an industry plaged with both imense worker's exploitation and claims that their products are do not express political points. Amazing!
I'm glad you (and Sterling) verbalize such BS that moral tales should be vague or "not so obvious".
Rather if the writers are blunt and just tell me so that icky guilt feeling in my gut can form.

A good example of something not being blunt enough and too subtle is “Guess who’s back” a film about Hitler coming back to life in modern day germany. There’s a lot of social commentary throughout the film but many nazis praise the movie and say it ends by making Hitler look like the good guy. If you’re not a Nazi you won’t see it that way but you can see how someone could.. unfortunately when your political satire isn’t obvious enough as satire then it fails
my problem is the messeges seem more important than the stortelling so we get stories that are uneganging but has some good messeges and im more of a both kinda person
I do think there is something wonderful in a movie that can convey its meaning both subtly and accurately, but I'd rather a movie be blunt than misappropriated by reactionaries.

I have a comic I made where the main characters get an abortion, and the message is almost me screaming that Pro-life is bad, and allow women to have autonomy. I was told my message is too blunt, but that’s the fucking point.

It's weird you posted this because a few weeks ago I was talking with my friend about Grand Theft Auto 5 and he all but said he didn't like it because it wasn't subtle and I was saying that something doesn't have to subtle for it to be good.
i really enjoyed what i've seen of this, i just wish it were more accessible to the public.
I want to add that at the time of the original Twilight Zone series, shows were reeaally heavily sponsored. Rod Serling had to take out a mention of the *Chrysler Building* in a script sponsored by Ford. The "subtlety" present in the original Twilight Zone series is not what Rod Serling really wanted, it was more a byproduct of getting through the sponsors and censors present at the time.
Nightmare at 30,000 Feet was actually my favorite episode, but I love the trope of the hero inadvertently becoming the villain.
I keep finding every video so well written it feels like art. Even when I know very little (or sometimes don't even care) about the 'subject' movie or show. Keep up the good job.

Heh....I had some reservation about Nu-Twilight zone, I had high expectation, but the stories were a bit too predictable (except Nightmare, because it spent a lot of time at misdirection) however the interpreation and director were top notch.
The new series is damn good but my main problem is that theres no balance between horror and message. Peele is a good director but hes got too many "messages" to tell at one time. Yes, sterling did have his messages but he put simple but effective horror in between. "I am night, color me black" is an excellent episode with its message but "the invaders" is yet another excellent experience. No message, simple, bone chilling horror and thats what this new series needs. Yes, it can have its message but give the next one breathing room inbetween. each episode dosen't have to be lighting in a bottle like the last one. Not all episodes sterling and his team wrote where huge hits but he knew which to pace each one out so when he had a message, they could come through more clear. This new series is trying be perfect with a subtle, yet powerful message time and time again. Its trying too hard. It needs to branch out and chill. Let the horror aspect take over. Introduce a monster or let a character just get involved in a twisted world. Dosent have to explain its reasoning or motive. Look at junji ito for simple, yet effective horror. Hell, get him on board! He would be pefrect! If you want complex horror, take SCP foundation for inspiration.
Horror is found it many more places than what we just find it messages. Thats why something as simple as "theres a monster under my bed" is still scary, even till today.
Good stuff... recently rewatched a bunch of it. The fact that it was a show specifically designed to use sci-fi to address political and social concerns underscores once again how sci-fi is a great vehicle to explore those kinds of problems with a certain amount of emotional distance. And also how sci-fi came about specifically because of a need to address social concerns.
That Rod Serling interview clip was strange to watch because it reminded me of criticism against Green Book and the roles black people need to play to get academy acclaim.
I love my worldview challenged. I also love a good story. And when it comes to the latter Peele's TZ, thus far, has come up short.

One of my favorite episodes of the twilight zone, is the most blunt. It's Night of the Meek, btw.
Night of the Meek is fantastic! My favorite is probably He's Alive, and it's about as unsubtle as you can get as well. If you think good Twilight Zone requires subtlty in it's social critique...I'm not sure you even have seen The Twilight Zone.

i have loved the twilight zone since i was a teen watching the reruns in the 90s one of my most favoirte episodes was the one about beauty it was a beautiful white woman on the planet with a bunch of ugly aliens. it taught me what my mother would often say consider the source . im so glad that this show was sooo ahead of its time and making its return now.

I never watched the old one, but really liked the new one. It was exactly how I had imagined it from hearsay of the old one.
I just hope that more people take some of the ideas that show up in the Twilight Zone and run with them. If the lessons can be learned, so too can extrapolating the concepts. The show might not on always, but it always comes back when the audience needs to be told to think.

I like the goofy easter eggs because I'm goofy, and when I see them, I feel like Peele and I are goofs who love the same corny things.
How some can react to progressive themes honestly reflected in reiterations of popular sci-fi culture that were conceptually progressive to begin with (ie Star Trek, dr who, etc) is remarkable. Some folks seem able to feel nostalgic for a show while
being quarantined to its core values is astonishing. Also, the synthchill reminds me of 3am essays. Unreal.

Direct = Bad was a big part of the American anti communist propaganda push. The government demanded more abstract art, more figurative stories, more programs that taught “show don’t tell” as an immutable aspect of storytelling on par with spelling and grammar. In truth, showing is good, and telling is good, and narration is good and dialogue is good, you just have to know what your idea is and make some educated decisions about the best tools for your idea.

Honestly, I really liked the new Twilight Zone. There were some episodes better than others, sure but I never understood the constant criticisms at all. It felt like I was watching a completely different show. Kudos for the vid.

The point about people misinterpreting media to reach the opposite conclusion is poignant. In particular I wish 13 Reasons Why had a narration at the end, because without it, people ended up, to use your words, reinforcing their existing worldview.

I genuinely don't enjoy this reboot. There's something uncanny about this version of the show to me. I liked the the references to the old show. I'm fine with the time frame of these shows and everything. The Twilight zone was always blunt and I applaud this revival for keeping this. I think the reason I can't be immersed into this version fully is because it's a product of our time. The original Twilight Zone is my absolute favorite show and I think its because it was timeless but still a product if it's time. I remember watching the comedian from the reboot. The story was great and so was the moral, however I found it too vulgar. It took out the enjoyment for me.
I remember last year when i started watching the show, I went to Reddit to see some fan theories, and found a thread from a guy who was a fan of the original, and his comments went on saying he hates how "political" the new Twilight Zone show was. How it was full of "leftist white man bad propaganda". And it was kinda sad actually. It may still be there, but I wouldn't know since I completely disregarded it. It was so OBVIOUS that he hated the show, not because of the political themes, but because the shows politics didn't agree with his. Even with people telling him not to watch it, he brought up how Jordan Peele made a statement saying he'd never make a film with a white lead, saying he's a racist and blah blah blah. The solution was always and will always be not to watch the show.
Yeah, no, politics are an undeniable part of almost any art piece, it's more than reasonable to want them to be properly integrated, if a movie breaks its flow to deliver an out of character speech directly intended for the audience instead of being part of its universe, that's not integrating the themes into the art, that's forcibly splitting them apart. The reason we have art in the first place is to explore methods of communication other than just speaking directly to each other, you could just write down a message on a piece of paper, or you could create a world and story that actively promote that very same message, if your story doesn’t make its message apparent on its own and you have to outright state it in simple words for the idiots in the audience to understand, then it’s just a failure as art. Of course if the times are really desperate we might have to sacrifice art for a period to get our messages across, and I’m not even saying that’s necessarily a bad thing to do, but let’s at least be honest with ourselves and admit what we want is not good art but good propaganda

This really changed my view on blunt messaging in media. I'm a fan of tons of media and one thing that stays constant through different fans is the idea that a certain story supports a reactionary world view... Even though things I follow have at least a center left perspective on things. Star wars for example has some fans who don't even get the most basic real world implications of A New Hope right.
The new Twilight Zone was just thoroughly lacking a good execution of its ideas, there are some interesting concepts but ultimately, the episodes felt rushed and stale.
I watched the first season of the new show I find it boring and obvious (as in what’s gonna happen) not as thrilling and deep as the old show. This one is just on the nose. I did like repay a lot.
Well, that was... on target. Your Venn diagram is spot on (pun intended?). Uncomfortable doesn’t necessarily mean bad; it can mean good, too. I don’t expect jogging to be comfortable, but it isn’t bad. If I get a rock in my shoe, that’s a different kind of uncomfortable, and I’ll stop to get the rock out, but I’ll keep jogging. We need to practice differentiating between sore muscles and rocks in shoes (metaphorically speaking).
A splendid episode. Conveying a clear message goes hand in hand with the refreshing attitude I've seen lately of being genuine rather than interacting with something "ironically." There's a memetic image about writers who use subtlety being cowards, but this episode made me reconsider that image. Thank you for this new line of thought to consider.
