The Twilight Zone might be the most influential TV show in sci-fi history, the classic Rod Serling creation that changed the face of science fiction, horror, comedy, and television itself. The Twilight Zone was a gamechanger when it first debuted, and every subsequent Twilight Zone reboot and Twilight Zone remake is part of the rich tapestry that is the history of the Twilight Zone. Throughout Twilight Zone history, we’ve seen a Twilight Zone movie, Twilight Zone games and Twilight Zone pinball, the theme park ride Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and more, leading all the way up to the new Jordan Peele Twilight Zone 2019 series on CBS All Access.
From the first Twilight Zone trailer, and every subsequent Twilight Zone clip and Twilight Zone scene, we could not be more excited for the new Twilight Zone episodes coming courtesy of Twilight Zone Jordan Peele. Twilight Zone explained so much about the human condition, about race and social issues, and through Rod Serling, it elevated the burgeoning medium of Television into the powerhouse it is today.

Rod Sterling and The Twilight Zone was truly ahead of its time. It would’ve lasted longer had people during the 60’s were emotionally and mentally ready to tackle the themes discussed.
How should society have gone about “tackling” those themes? Do you believe people are currently capable of tackling them?
Michael McDonald I think we’re just as if not more divisive today but he difference is we have more information and knowledge about other cultures outside of our own. When literature, tv, and radio in the 50’s and 60’s were not inclusive to minorities, it makes educating the ignorant very challenging.
kenneth phillips it lasted awhile in the 60s anyway. You’re trying to eloquently make a point that is filled with zero substance. Saying that people in the 60s were not ready to tackle those themes is just ignorant. I’d say the average person in the 60s was more intellectually sound. The education system then was much more efficient. And if you are going to talk about race, race related issues were even more prevalent, so they were more needed and even more readily discussed back then.
Anderson Brewer The host, Charlie said that Twilight Zone faced multiple cancellations due to CBS studios not being on board with Rod and the writers focusing on social issues and race. This unfortunate impasse paired with low ratings eventually led to Sterling selling his shares and trying other projects. So what exactly are you getting at sir? 🧐
I love the show but they didn’t invent that type of story. He probably read 1950s horror comics. A lot of E.C. Comics would’ve made perfect twilight zone scripts. They tackled social issues masked inside of a sci fi script as well.
Let's also not forget, *if there's no Twilight Zone, there will be no The X Files, or Black Mirror*
I love all three shows! Gosh how I loved them all. A few of my teachers would play an episode or two by the Twilight Zone because some of those episodes had such a deep meaning to them that my teachers wanted us to see them. These were high school teachers.

Well said. Might I also add Outer Limits and Are You Afraid of the Dark? With respect to Twilight Zone, Kolchak: The Nightstalker was much more a thematic influence for the creation X-Files and its spinoffs than Twilight Zone, but damned did it push creator Chris Carter to make a more successful Kolchak.

I think Jordan peele is perfect as the new host considering that on Key and Peele they make multiple references to twilight zone in multiple sketches. He’s also very good at making horror
Nerd_World I really hope it’s great... but tbh, if I hadn’t seen that Jordan Peele is involved in it, I would’ve just assumed it’s going to stink like 99% of reboots and remakes do.
Honestly Jordan Peele is what's bringing me in- he's def a master of horror and it's clear that he understands the concept of the Twilight Zone's surreal reality

My favorite ending, really makes you think. Love how he addresses us, the viewer breaking the 3rd wall.
When I was a kid, Rod Serling was my idol. His Twilight Zone show inspired me in such a great way that when I was fourteen I wrote a short story called "The Death of Life" and fancied that Rod had bought it from me and put it on his television show. Well, by then, Twilight Zone was airing its final episode which meant that that fancy of mine could never have come to pass. Of course, had the show been extended, it is most likely that my story would have never fallen into Rod's lap anyway. In point of fact, the competition from Rod and his stable of steady writers was too brilliant next to my humble single contribution. But the story I had written did in truth get published years later in a new national magazine called Vertex the Magazine of Science Fiction. I owe my first writing sale to the master himself who inspired me in the first place -- Rod Serling. Thank you, Rod.

@@homegrowntwinkie Thank you for asking. My published story is about a scientist and the creature he secretly makes whom he aptly names "Life." The scientist and his human-like creature live out in the country, secluded from the rest of the world. It's safer that way. Remember, "Life" is a kept secret from society. I give the reasons for such secrecy in the story. Suffice to say that it would be too dangerous to go public on "Life". "Life" is in many ways like an innocent and curious child. The scientist is old and will soon die. The scientist does not want to leave "Life" behind to fetch on his own. He is fearful about deserting "Life" because no one will understand his creature and, worst, motivated by their fears and ignorance, may in fact kill "Life". Understandably, the scientist wants to spare "Life" of potential brutality at the hands of others. So the scientist (before he dies) devises a way to end the life of "Life" … but not without a Twilight Zone twist!
My brother was a janitor at a hospital. He was cleaning a basement like part of the building when they started talking about the episode of the Twilight Zone where the guy just wants to read and the whole town got nuked on the radio. Later they played a bit from that episode, and my brother thought it was real for a second, and that he had ended up like the guy from the episode! We had a good laugh about it later.
That episode was the first one my sister and I ever saw and after the show ended, we instantly got hooked. That feeling that Twiligjt Zone leaves was so addicting. And mind opening. I believe the episode was called "Time Enough At Last"

@@Baelor-Breakspear Nah, but like I said said, we did joke about it. Like because I didn't have a car of my own at the time (still don't) he would pick me up from work some nights. He told me the story, so I joked that had he come to pick me up I would have greeted him as a Ghoul from Fallout. Did an impression and everything!

I don't know the names of the episodes but my favorites are the ones about the evil doll, the one where people at a party got monster masks stuck to their faces, and the one where ugly monstrous people were the majority and beautiful normal looking people were ostracized and sent away.

Thank you. I researched this after he said the name. I at first couldn't find the actor, so I just typed the incident. It's so tragic. I feel sick to my stomach that those poor kids had died. The film makers broke child labor laws and even lied to the parents about explosives being on set. The whole thing was just a mess from the beginning.

If we are talking about most terrifying, though, I find "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You" to be the most horrific to me. I love how he took real issues in the world and painted them as fantasy. Beautiful.
My Highschool teacher told me that Rod's inspiration for Twilight Zone was seeing a friend of his get crushed to death by medical Supplies. The trauma and paradox inspired him

Jordan Peele was meant for this role. Have you seen that creepy, devilish smile he always flashes on the Key and Peele show? I mean it's not like Bill Skarsgard's killer clown smile, but it always shows a promise of chaos. I love that smile.

Seriously!!! I've said it before, I'll say it again. He's a force to be reckoned with in the horror scene. I'm sick of the same protagonists, same concepts, etc. His works are refreshing and exciting. I'm looking forward to watching him come into his own as a contender.

My favorite episode (which is hard to choose) is “Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up”. I love the whole premise of the episode and I love how it totally captures the essence of that time period perfectly. Everybody loves the 50s/60s. Such a great time period
It's so hard to pick my favorite episode. The original series has tons of episodes I totally adore, even though it wasn't really on the air for all that long. One example of a great (sort of underrated) episode imo, is one featuring Robert Redford, in which he plays an injured policeman who needs help from an elderly woman. She is terrified of Death, who happens to be personified (as she says she sees "him" all the time, on the subway, outside her window, etc.), and thinks Redford may be Death playing a trick on her. She relents and lets him in, seeing as he's been shot and the situation seems serious. She converses with him, tells him all about her fear, and Redford responds by explaining why death (after a long, full life) is natural. It might not be such a terrible thing after all. She grows to trust and admire him, until finally he reveals he actually was Death all along. She realizes she was silly to be so afraid before and happily takes his hand as they disappear into the ether. It's a very moving story with a lot more nuance than I can give here.
best part was when it was revealed to be her son that died in the line of duty as a police officer and that he was trying to help her pass on from it after seeing the twist, my heart was looking like, d'aaw

He is uncanny valley. He is so close to life that it is uncomfortable so you keep your eye on it because you oboe of you blink, they are gonna get you.
Season 4 had some of my favorites. The underrated, seldom mentioned "Jess Belle", and the brilliant "He's Alive", starring Dennis Hopper. The intensity of his performance, and the empathy with which we are viewing this dangerous extremist and his effect on his community, makes this episode feel fresh & relevant today.
Season 4 was horrible. They expanded the show to an hour and thought that meant they had to drag everything out but it was boring. The show was much better when they (correctly) changed it back to a half hour in season 5. The one exception of a great episode in season 4 was "Printer's Devil".
Sterling's voice alone is iconic to me.
I love the twilight zone. For years it was a New Years ritual me and my Dad had, watching the marathons! It's always been a favorite of mine and I hope Jordan Peele does a good job with it, I have faith that he will! One of my favorites is "Nothing in the dark" about an old lady on the run from death when she finally meets him she finds death is not as scary or explosive as she thought it was.

This episode just about made me cry. I love The Twilight Zone!! My all-time favorite episode is Mr. Bevis. There are so many wonderful episodes, and I really hope that this incarnation lives up to the original, is relevant, and profund for a new generation as Serling was for his.
My favorite has to be "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" although i also love "The After Hours". There were just so many great episodes.

The life of rod serling shows how he was influenced towards his genre.
So many young actors were on the twilight zone.
I liked the one where the old lady refuses to leave her condemned house because she thinks death will finally get her
A very young Robert Redford is in that one and the actress was in another episode where her phone rings at night and some creepy mad just keeps saying "Hello, hello, hello." She finds out later that an telephone line fell on her dead fiancee's grave. But not before she screamed at him to leave her alone. He finally spoke, "I always do what you say."
Hey, that 80's Twilight Zone theme song used to freak the hell out of me as a kid. And I loved the show. The ShadowMan story has stuck with me for 30 years now.
Same on that song...a shame more of its episodes weren't that good, though there were good ones in the mix.
I watched this episode with my mom and scared the hell out of her later that night whispering the “I am the shadow man” quote while she slept.
The original version theme song made me feel uneased.

It wasn't - it was b.s socialism finger pointing. and slow .. some tension - maybe its better in the 2nd season. Not on par with ANY of the Twilight Zones or the follow ups. Get better WRITING and characters with storylines centred on imagination, period.
I remember getting into this show watching a late night rerun of Eye Of The Beholder before the rise of 500 channel cable. It got solidified by An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge for school (which left a chill in me for the rest of the day I saw it). And now, 20 years later, 60 years after its debut, people still talk about it...mind-blowing!
The episode called "Kick the Can" was a good one. (1959)
I absolutely love the Twilight Zone. Hard to pick a favorite. However, one of my favorites is the one with the old lady afraid to open the door for the injured stranger.

My personal favorite episode of The Twilight Zone is The Changing of the Guard. It’s not as well known as some of the more classic episodes but it does make me cry every time I watch it.
"Time Enough At Last" has got to be my favorite. Its overplayed and probably the most referenced in other shows, but that's because of its impact and simplicity along with its ironic twist.
Greatest TV show ever period. I even have the monologue of season 1 tatttoed onto my leg.
"A Little Peace and Quiet" was my favorite episode from the 80s version. Saw it as a kid and still reference it to this day. I discovered recently that it came from one of the 50s episodes, "The Stopwatch" at least I think that's the name. Never seen that one but I plan to now...
The 80s version of The Twilight Zone was pretty good, but not as good as the 60s one, however A Little Peace and Quiet left me more uneased than A Kind of Stopwatch.
Definitely will say The Hitchhiker is my favorite. “I believe you’re going my way” gets my every time.

What's the name of the episode about the man who worked at a wax museum where there were wax figures of historical murderer and the guy became so obsessed with them that he agreed to take them home in his basement and watch over them? His obsession with them caused them to come to life, and he became one of the wax figures.
"Night of the Meek". Tears of sadness and of joy every time I watch it. Beautifully done in every possible way.

Question - is a new Twilight Zone needed in a world where Black Mirror is the new Twilight Zone? I am a fan of the Twilight Zone and I really hope they manage to finally make a great reboot
Off the top of my head The Hitchhiker was my favorite episode
This guy gets a lot of things wrong. The show was actuality very subtle, compared to the way modern tv shows tackle politics with activism style writing. The original reflected politics and social issues within the story. So it would set up a sci fi or fantasy plot with its own story, and that story would be a parallel or reflection of something going on in the real world. Compare that to the Jordan Peele 2019 version, who’s first episode opens with a 3 min rant on gun control and how one side is stupid and wrong, and there is only one solution. The original was nothing like that.
Also I am the Night’s episodes story wasn’t just about racism. It was about the hate in mans heart in general. That is why the black cloud ends up showing up in war torn countries, or places of violence not related to race. However, the story reflects in the real world the racism and civil rights movement in the US. So by telling a sci fi story that isn’t directly about racism, Americans at time could reflect what was happening in their country to the story. So it actually was subtle. You also ignore the part where the black preacher has to convince himself that the man is worthy of being hanged. The story is also about majority rules. Mob mentality. People not standing up for what is right. Everyone sharing guilt. Plenty of characters in the story did things, or failed to act, not motivated by racism. The story was more nuanced then what “moose” is suggesting.

This guy also completely missed the fact that the Twilight Zone was Rod's way of getting through the PTSD that he suffered from, from his time in the war where he saw his best friend get his head blown off, among the other horrors that soldiers experience. The "tv people" wouldn't let him write about war in the real world so he created this sci-fi world where he could use metaphors and allegories to talk about social issues.
They tackle politics with activism by smashing you over the head with it over and over, then calling your racist if you don't like it. Twilight Zone reflected politics, very subtly or obviously , but not the same overkill - meaning its more agenda driven now - look no further than Star Wars and the KK Lucas divide with Jon Favreau faction. Its ridiculous .... need to be more even handed ...

I'm looking forward to Peele's version. Given what he's been doing with his writting and producing, I feel like he's perfect to pick up the mantle of Rod Sterling for the new generation.
I'm a baby born in the eighties and though I've tried to watch various adaptations, Rod Sterling's original black and white version is the one I love best. He had so many notable actors of the times make appearances too, my favorite of which is always seeing Meredith Burgess.

Jordan Peele is very talented. But the original "Twilight Zone" does not need a reboot. It was perfect as is. It is timeless, the material he covered is still relevant today.
I agree. I love the new age of psychological, bone chilling; behind the light of your eyes horror that Mr. Peele has brought to the new millennium. However, there can only be one Rod Serling. Its like trying to replace Marvin Gaye in R&B or Etta James in soulful blues, or the creative genius of Jim Henson.
But Im rooting for him. May his monologue be verbose and his cadence mighty. 🙌🏾

Twilight Zone is a timeless classic. A true piece of art who’s impact was not fully realized until after its time.
It’s amazing to see the true originality in the stories which have been recycled countless times since then.
I actually really enjoyed the 80's reboot. It had some amazing episodes like Night Crawlers and Gramma. It wasn't as iconic or memorable as the original, but it was a hell of a lot better than the two newer reboots!
I hope I can meet Rod Serling’s one day in heaven and shake his hand and let him know that after his passing his hard work is well known, and beloved by many. 💙

Dunno that I have a favorite episode, but the one that always stuck with me was The Midnight Sun. I'll let those who don't know look it up on Netflix. Suffice to say, the way they create a sense of impending doom, ratcheting up the terror ever so slow but sure... That's the Twilight Zone in a nutshell, done to its level best.
As for my favorite pinball machine, you're damn right about the Zone. I've probably pumped enough quarters into that machine, if I'd saved them all, coulda bought one myself.
The Midnight Sun is my favorite too. Earth was doomed either way. Whether the sun kept moving closer to the Earth or whether it would farther away from the Earth. I hope neither of scenarios happen due we, the people of Earth, will die.

“Walking distance” is the best one. It’s good to take a step back in time and breathe.
"Time Enough At Last" with Burgess Meredith is my favorite episode.
Wasn't that episode about when the man wanted time to read and it wasn't enough, and the a nuclear bomb blew up the world or something, and he was the only person alive with as many books as he could read until his glasses broke?
"A Game of Pool" is pretty dope and because it's Jack Klugman, I also like the episode "He's Alive" from the sadly often forgotten fourth season.
Eye Of The Beholder is the best episode of The Twilight Zone. It’s well written, and still rings true today.

My Dad watched this show as a kid and when I was younger he introduced it to me, this show really made me have a love for classic movies and tv shows.
My two favorite twilight zones are: living doll and the odyssey of flight 33.

In Los Angeles on the bus when we go by Willoughby Avenue sometimes I say "Next Stop Willoughby" and maybe a few people laugh about it.
The Four Of Us Are Dying is an extremely underrated TZ episode and is one of my favorites.
And When The Sky Was Opened. Not one most people say is their favorite--gives me CHILLS every time.
A fave of mine for the same reasons...I found the ending of "In The Attic" AKA "The Encounter" to be in a similar vein. Both are examples of "less FX is more horror".
Will always be the monster are due on maple street, because 60 years ago to now, that episode is an excellent look into how people react with stupidity to something they dont understand.

Based on his two "good" racist horror movies?? I think James Wan would of been a better pick since he's made good movies like Saw, Insidious 1&2, Annabelle, The Conjuring, and even being an executive producer on American Horror Story. He's a better pick than a racist fat black man.
Flynn Arcos twilight zone is thriller, jordan peel makes thriller movies. I mean US reminded me of just one really good big twilight zone episode. Also why do you say his movies are racist i mean get out is just a what if and US has literally nothing to do with race unless you mean having black main characters is racist. Also why insult him calling him a “racist fat black man” when he is not racist and that has nothing to do with anything when picking someone for this. The hunt is really one of my favorites. I always called my girlfriend "ya old woman" in the same voice and rhythm. I thought it was hilarious, she hated it.

Jordan Peele is so our Rod Sterling. You can tell me that Get Out and Us don't seem like long-lost terrifying episodes out of The Twilight Zone. I trust him with the reboot, I just hope the original theme song is back.

my favorites: time enough at last and the one w the people that built the bunker and were laughed at, until an hbomb scare, which made the neighbors bust into their bunker. the most thought provoking i just saw recently: where the woodbine twineth. very interesting one abt a girl that wants to play and be friends w other races to her aunts protestations. and ends up running off into the past to play with her only friends. it was so tragic, sad and simple goodness

Serling's unique and fascinating imagination combined with his manner of speaking, his distinctive vocal tone, his dark intense looks, his mastery over the English language, these qualities and more made Twilight Zone something very special and memorable for me. I cannot pick my favorite episode, too many good ones. But I shall never forget a very touching story called "In Praise of Pip" written by Rod. That emotional episode touched every compassionate nerve in my body. Still does today after too many views to mention. You can't reinvent the wheel. The original Twilight Zone remains for me "the one and only."
I love the Twilight Zone! I used to watch as a kid right before I go to bed. Good memories.
I recently watched He's Alive and its every bit as relevant today as it was 60 years ago, but thats not my favorite episode, even with Dennis Hoppers incredible performance. Its really hard to pinpoint an episode as being the best so I just have a top 5 with no particular order: The Howling Man, The Obsolete Man, The Invaders, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Two.

My favorite classic episode is "the fear"
The invaders is the best episode, a bit kitchy effects but the entire episode has no physical lines until the very end which makes us rely on Agnes moorheads facial expressions and actions to understand the terror she is feeling that coupled with a twist ending the show was famous for makes it my favorite.
