What a great job you did! If only I had a lesson like this back when I was in school! I have wondered about these guys for years and years, but now that I've seen about 5 - 7 different young garters in my yard this spring i've decided to look up what they're all about!
One of my cats loves to catch these and bring them in the house. She doesn't kill them, just carries them around, so I usually take them and put them back outside.
When we lived in Canada, our cat would always bring us little snakes unharmed. I loved it. I was young so I don't know if they were ring necked snakes or red bellies at the time.
The beginning is so awesome, it feels so genuine and even if I’m having a terrible day, he makes is so much better. Thank you so much Chris. You are awesome and always so happy and make me happy.
Cool video. My eight year old daughter absolutely adores garter snakes. We set up some tin and boards on my property so we can find them. She loves all snakes, but garter snakes are her favorite. We’ve found garter snakes, worm snakes, racers, northern copperheads, black rat snakes, and hognose snakes. They all are awesome creatures. Thank you for keeping your videos kid friendly.
Yo Chris, nicely edited video, it's a pleasure to watch a well crafted piece. As for the subject matter, fantastic, I loved all of it. I have always loved watching snakes. Yesterday I had one of my most interesting encounters while hiking along a small brook. A mature garter swimming upstream , stopping frequently enough for me to get some good pics, and moving enough for me to take a cool video. I send them off to my grandkids , who love to go looking for snakes with Grandpa, but that's another story! Thanks for your time and expertise! A
There's lots of garter snakes around here in the parks, by creeks and ponds. Always love to see them, so pretty. We're heading down to Cape Henlopen state park next month for 2 nights. Always loads of wildlife to enjoy there. Nice video!
Awesome video Chris! One of the snakes I’ve grown up catching in Massachusetts it’s always good to see a quality video like this about such common species! Really turns some heads and shows how unique these little guys actually are. Great work and excited to see more!
A ton of great facts, I absolutely loved this video! We’ll be sure to link it in the ringneck video on our channel. We’ve been looking for these guys all summer, hopefully we’ll catch up with one soon enough! Keep up the great work Chris!
I found a black and bright yellow garter in the pine barrens last summer but as soon as I spotted it, it took off into some thick brush. It was one of the prettiest snakes I’ve seen.
@@chrisegnoto I've been fortunate enough to see ones with blue stripes and others with red stripes. The red in particular is really nice looking. I assume that the red striped one was probably a northwestern garter snake. (Thamnophis ordinoides) Around here we pretty much just have two kinds of snakes, various types of garter snakes and rubber boas. I have never seen a rubber boa, but they look cool.
I enjoyed this so much! Came home from a walk with my puppy to find one outside my door! He quickly slithered away before I could take a picture. First one I've seen here. I'm in Galloway, New Jersey. 😊
Fascinating video. The reason I looked this up was because of an encounter I had with a snake many years ago down on Cape Cod. It was quite the Brumance! ;)
I saw one of these in by backyard yesterday. It was slithering rather nonchalantly along the grass next to my patio and stopped just a few feet away from where I was standing. I went inside to get my phone to take a picture, but by the time I had it had made its way into the hostas.
Very informative. I found a snake out back I thought it was copperhead. Neighbors said no garter. Yep they were rite. I have tons of black snakes. I released 3 8 yrs ago and seen 1 this winter going under a ramp where a rat hole was huge like over 3ft
Copperheads, moccasins, rattlesnakes, and coral snakes. At one time, not so long ago, I thought these were the only venomous snakes in the continental US. Turns out garter, ring necked, and even hog nosed snakes have venom, just no hypodermic fangs.
1977 my girl and I walked thru the grass to the Wenatchee River. We saw glimpses of a garter snake in the dead grass, and she finally was able to catch it by the tail. As she held it up, I could not believe what I saw. It had a gigantic head with eyes close together, and two sharp bumps above them. It's snout was squared off with large nostrils. It had large bright red ruffles on each side of it's head that were covered by flaps until it frilled them way out. As it tried to bight her hand I saw it's mouth was bright red inside. It looked more like a Horn toad or fire newt than a snake. Just as I yelled to drop it, it coiled around her wrist and tried to bite her hand again. She screamed at the sight of it's head and face and then flung the snake hard into the air. We chased it to the river where it went underwater so deep that we lost sight.
Seeing the Rough Green one at 1:08 almost gives me flashbacks to when I was bitten by one as a kid. I was about 11-12 at the time and the scars are still visible on my left thumb. Not sure where that breed is most common but it happened in Northeast Ohio.
Thanks for the video, when I was growing up we lived in western Massachusetts in a little town of Chester we used to see them all the time in our yard and in the basement.👍🇺🇸
Finally caught me a Eastern today, confirmed I checked and saw the rear fangs! Very cool. It made garters from cool to me to I LOVE them. Spicy bois. I wish all snakes were rear fanged!

Hi Harry. I guess the best thing you can do is eliminate their food sources, but really, you should just leave them. I have never in my life been bitten by any snake that I didn't stress out and handle, first. Even then, it happens maybe 5% of the time
I’ve had several of these guys living around here constantly. They love my fire wood pile where they feast on grubs and palmetto bugs. I had my Checkered Garter Snake for about 2 months, before she gave birth to 10 others. If I had known....what I know now, I would've put the babies in a separate tank 😢 She ate her babies just a couple days after they were born 😭
Hey. Hope you have a moment. So... I have had a pair of garter snakes living by my back porch for a couple years now. Not sure if it’s the same pair or not. Might be. Anyway... they have ample food and water right there by my back porch. They have lots of bugs to eat from the night light. Well I went out today and both of them are laying out in the open and can hardly move. Both are HUGE in diameter. I think they have gorged on cicadas to the point where they just can’t move much now. I thought they were dead at first. They are still alive but can hardly move. Never seen them like this before. I assume the snakes get lethargic after such a meal but these snakes are completely defenseless and laying in the open. I didn’t move them because I think they want the heat from the concrete they are on. Have you ever seen garter snakes eat so much that they become the diameter of a golf ball? Maybe bigger. 😂 these things are PLUMP.
Hi. That is crazy. Never heard of them doing that, but it makes a lot of sense. If it is pretty hot or sunny, I might move them to the shade just in case. They would have to be handled gently so they dodnt regurgitate. Do you have any photos or video? That REALLY belongs on Instagram or as a TH-cam short. If you have a Gmail account, you already have a TH-cam channel under that email name. I'm on Instagram as Chris Egnoto. Let me know if you post it. Either way, let me know how they fare.
@@chrisegnoto I moved them to a nearby bush where they typically hang out. Got them in the shade. They were still laying out on the concrete. Lol. Yeah I took some pics of them. I don’t use any other social media platforms. Poor snakes are so stuffed. I took a pic of one and it’s head looks so tiny compared to the rest of its body. Poor thing looks like those anaconda pics when an anaconda has eaten something huge and the snakes scales are spread really far apart. 😂 One attempted to coil up but it’s too fat to coil properly and only got the first couple inches of it’s neck to coil a bit. Neither regurgitated any food. I hope they havnt stuffed themselves too much and have a clog in there. 😂 these poor things are absolutely stuffed. If you are in an area where the cicadas are hatching... check near some night lights and I bet you’ll find some of these poor snakes that have eaten a bunch of the dying cicadas.
Wow, just wow. Hey, if you are up for it, maybe I can include one of your photos or a clip in my video. It will be out Thursday or Friday, I am hoping. I would of course give you full credits in the clip or photo.
They're finding lots of things are venomous that they used to think weren't. Komodo Dragons have actually been classified as venomous now. Past thinking was that bacteria was to blame, until they found that these lizards have less bacteria in their mouths than humans do, and decided that it was venom doing the damage to their prey after all. Anyhow, great video, keep up the good work!
Over the years I have picked up hundreds of garter snakes, none even tried to bite me. I was never rough so I guess they didn't feel threatened most didn't even musk. I had heard from a herpetologist that they were actually venomous. My cousin used to argue with me about it. LOL Until one bit the fleshy skin between the thumb and finger. It swelled up and it was hard to use his thumb for a couple of hours. Didn't argue after that.
I have been bit by them plenty of times and nothing happened, their teeth are so tiny you don't even feel them... To be fair they were quick bites though
I got bit once by a smaller one. It didn't really hurt, but I was rather impressed by the little guy for even trying. Most of the time, they just try to get away, so if you allow them to go from one hand to the other, there's no issues.
@@earthwormjim420 Yep, but I suspect that it depends a bit on the size of the snake and where they bit you. The smaller ones are going to have a hard time with thicker parts of the body, but I could imagine it hurting a bit if they can get a hold of a flap of skin. Which they usually won't as they'll usually get something thicker like a finger.
I actually watched a Common Grackle kill and swallow a young Garter Snake in my backyard a few years ago. So I imagine other medium-to-large birds (like Crows) probably eat them, too.
@@chrisegnoto I live in Nova Scotia, just outside Lunenburg, they're Eastern Smooth Green Snakes. They're very docile. I pull them up in the bucket, put them by my pond. They never snap, unlike the garters that hang around my barn.
thank you so much i almost stepped on one today while pissing in my dads back yard thought about grabbing it but now im happy i know it is venomous amazing video
It was with night crawlers.i would leave it on my palm an put my hand in the aquarium I had them in and it would slither over and suck it outta my hand like a piece of spaghetti. When I would put a frog in they would both go after the frog an usually the one that got the head ate the frog.
I often catch various types of snakes into big jars and feed them to study their behavior, and write down all my research before I set them free. I do the same to lizards, frogs and other small creatures. Any i find dead in bad condition, (like roadkill) I'll remove the hide, and stuff them so the corpse doesn't go to waste.
Wow, sounds kind of cool. I have always wanted a home filled with drawings, notes, tools, specimens and all that cool stuff. Binoculars at the windows, telescope in the attic and whatnot. I'm mostly that, but I don't have a place of my own, yet. The stuffed skins sound pretty cool, btw. Cool comment, thank you!
Chris- I just took pics of a very aggressive snake that I think is a Garter. It quite handsome and I'm not sure why it's so angry. Maybe my chickens bothered it, they are nearby. How can I send you a pic to confirm species?
Hi Mark. I think you are right, probably a Garter, but be careful until we know! The chicken are serial killers in the snake world, so I imagine the snake was stressed from that. Try finding me on facebook under my name (Chris Egnoto) or instagram same name or try emailing me. My email should be in my "about me" section on my TH-cam home screen.
I am so sorry about that snake. I hate finding dead things, especially when we knew them when they were alive. I would love to do a dog video some time. So much to cover.
You must have been allergic. I have been bitten many times - nothing. You would need several gallons of garter snake saliva and a bicycle pump to have any real effect on a human.
I get you, but I have been bitten many times also. I truly think it was due to the long bite and the fact that the rear teeth were dug in pretty well. I have a friend who researches herps for the state and he figures it is what I am thinking also. You could be right, but I don't think it is because I am alergic. Perhaps something else. Maybe it ate something that didn't agree with me or bacteria.
I am terrified of any kind of snake My son just found a brown snake with yellow stripes in his backyard he also have a small dog can the snake hurt them. And if theirs 1 I am sure they will have more. How do you keep them away. Thank you kindly. PS. I live in Mississauga Ontario Canada. It’s said we don’t have dangerous snakes here but I am frightened of all snakes. I love going in my back yard now I am thinking twice about doing my gardening.
Don't worry at all. They will avoid you and not bite unless you hold onto one that has already warned you. Even then, the bite is nothing and barely even hurts most of the time. They are harmless to pets (unless you have a pet frog or worm), and in the hotter months, they go underground.
One rose up at me and tried to strike me in the dark by my trashcan tonight. Killed it immediately. Scared me! I thought it was a different kind of snake based on its behavior. It was flailing a lot as well. Bad move bc it threatened me so I struck back. I felt kinda bad after I figured out what it actually was... Also, is your dog named mouse? lol
I remember people killing these snakes a lot growing up, I guess because they were afraid of them? I don't know I just never understood it one bit, the damn thing is harmless and you can always just walk away
Don't have problem with garter snakes so this year is the first time ever I saw 3 foot female. Not small not a baby. I made friends with a hawk already so snakes will keep hawk in fresh meat. No wonder that hawk likes me.

Cool vid man
Thank you so much :)
Great stuff
Nice video!!!
If the tail of a garter snake is cut off will it grow back ?
Thank you! Found a bigger sized one around my pond & wanted to see what kind it was. I don’t mind it, just hope it stays away from my koi & frogs🙃
Nice job
You don’t have a link to your blog.
Thank you. It is there, now.
Thank you. Gnarly looking bite. I've only taken 2 skin-piercing snake bites in my life, both of them from rat snakes in Japan.
Yes, garter snakes are venomous It is just that their venom is not very toxic to humans.
Good stuff man!
Why is the sound not synched with the video? Talking about the checkered pattern and I see a toad. It's insane.
Huh actually, I have no idea. That's strange.
I love green snakes, I get them in my well during the summer
Wow, where do you live?
@@chrisegnoto I live in Nova Scotia, just outside Lunenburg, they're Eastern Smooth Green Snakes. They're very docile. I pull them up in the bucket, put them by my pond. They never snap, unlike the garters that hang around my barn.
What species if garter snake is @ 4:17?
Eastern
I liked and subscribe
Thank you!
id love to own a eastern garter snake i live in Jax FL. Theyre gorgeous here
You have a LOT of amazing species of...everything near you, though.
thank you so much i almost stepped on one today while pissing in my dads back yard thought about grabbing it but now im happy i know it is venomous amazing video
Lol. Keep in mind that the venom generally does not affect humans. I was a rare and unique case because it's teeth were stuck in me for five minutes.
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much :)
I heard that they can breed with copperheads is that true
No, they might den with them but they cannot interbreed.
I had these as pets when I was a kid.they had babies twice and one of the adults would eat out of my hand.
That's pretty cool
@@chrisegnoto I also collect insects and arachnids. I preserve them in clear guerilla glue to keep the color of the shell from fading.
I would love to go snake hunting with you!!!
I love garter snakes 🐍
I remember seeing the Rough Green Snake on the side of house.
I found a dead garter today. I'm wondering if a raccoon or hawk killed it? It was sad to find it dead since I've been watching it for a while.
Actually, my dog found it and rolled on it.
You should make a video on dogs and why they do the dirty things they do.
"To add to the discomfort, there was snake musk seeping into my wounds." That musk probably contributed to the reaction.
I am terrified of any kind of snake
My son just found a brown snake with yellow stripes in his backyard he also have a small dog can the snake hurt them.
@@chrisegnoto Yup every one I have ever seen just wants to get away
What is brumation?
It is basically like hibernation.
The thumbnail iz a different speciez i believe.
Locally called a Chukkadada in NE
You have to Red tailed hawk video and racoons i think You have bullfrogs video
Garter Snakes are actually venomous just their venom is not toxic (very mild) to humans.
Yeah, that's what I was saying
@@chrisegnoto You right, I want back and you did mention that my bad.... Still, I love these snakes and they can leave an nasty bite...
That one you say is trying to look venomous is doing a fantastic job. It looks just like a pygmy rattlesnake.
Have You ever footaged their Mating rituals?
No, I came close once, but my camera battery had no charge. :(
My mom found one it had no stripes but diamonds going down its back but it wasn't a rattlesnake though I live in Nebraska!
Are you from Minnesota??
No, I am from Upper state NY, then lived in Canada and England, and now Pa
Now for some reason I can't stop thinking about Frank Zappa.... LOL !!!! (maybe you will understand the reference).
Hmm. Makes me think of a poster I saw with him in it.
Found one in a termite station and thought it was poisonous because it flatted its self out , super gross
Also, is your dog named mouse? lol
It was just scared, maybe it got pinched by the can or something. Sometimes we make mistakes, though. And yeppers, my dog is named Mouse :)
I remember people killing these snakes a lot growing up, I guess because they were afraid of them? I don't know I just never understood it one bit, the damn thing is harmless and you can always just walk away
I used to catch these guys when I was a kid used to getting bit all the time didn't know they were venomous
That striped one look like our Nordic european viper.
I agree. Those snakes look pretty cool. And they also look pretty similar to our harmless snakes - lol
CHRIS, ARE YOU A UFC DUDE?
No....why? Do I look like I've been beat up too many times?
What there venmous ?
Mildly
yes, their venom is not very toxic to humans.
I had one back 79 , she had 21 with 1 had a deformed eye.
I live in Maryland and saw one yesterday I was going pick up put the park police was there if the police was not there I would have picked it up
Hog nose snakes are also mildly venomous in this same manner.
Yes they are. I finally found my first LIVING Hognose, recently
Don't have problem with garter snakes so this year is the first time ever I saw 3 foot female. Not small not a baby. I made friends with a hawk already so snakes will keep hawk in fresh meat. No wonder that hawk likes me.
Maybe I never saw the big mommas before as all the ferals, skunks, hawks and eagles are eating them.
