    I was given the half day Driving and Firing Experience as a present and it was honestly one of the best days of my life. Martin (who is featured in the video) was the fireman that day and he was absolutely superb, teaching shovelling technique and demonstrating how to manage the boiler on what is a very challenging line as well as answering a myriad of questions. It's not cheap - but if you can afford it (or get it as a present!) I can't recommend it highly enough. Every time you see a steam train again afterwards, live or on TV, you smile to yourself and think "I've driven one of those!"

    You don't drive a steam locomotive, you operate them !

    Looks cool and like something I'll have to try. Not that I could quote yet, but how would one go about getting a job as a driver or fireman on a steam railway?

    • @VehicularBrit
      @VehicularBrit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't get a "job" as such, most heritage railway staff, drivers included, are volunteers. Give your local railway a call or see if they have anything about volunteering on their website. You'll have to work your way through the ranks, if you're in the ops (operations) department which is responsible for the locos themselves, you'll normally start as a cleaner, then get training to become a fireman, then eventually get training to become a driver. It takes time to work your way up - don't expect to be driving in a day, it's more like a number of years. Regardless of what role you play, it's extremely satisfying and fulfilling. I am but a humble cleaner at the Watercress Line and I love doing what I do!

      Not as difficult as it used to be. A lot of heritage railways are short of volunteers as the steam crews get older and retire. An engineering background or steam experience on road steam can help a lot. But you still need to put time in on a regular basis.

      @@peterflitcroft9756 I’d love to but where I am in America right now there’s no steam railways near me unfortunately, still my main dream I’m working towards though.

      @@Thomas__Blue I have an American friend who attends Berkley and did his dissertation on the English railway enthusiast. He spent a lot of his summer volunteering on the Ffestiniog railway in Wales.
