Liturgical Obedience, the Imitation of Christ, and the Seductions of Autonomy

- This lecture, given at Holy Family Academy in Manassas, VA, on October 16, explains why it is right and just for liturgy to be determinate in its words and actions. The fully "pre-set" texts and rubrics of the Traditional Latin Mass, make of the ministers obedient servants, "intelligent tools," of a Master who is greater than they, and thereby help all the faithful to enter ritually into the holy mysteries. This they do in imitation of Christ, who came not to do His own will, but His Father's, and who says nothing other than what the Father commands Him. The "liturgical little way" consists in treasuring small things as signs of greater ones; in the kingdom of God, nothing is negligible. All of this is contrasted with the extemporaneity, improvisation, optionitis, looseness, and casualness inherent to the new liturgical rites, with their instructions to speak "these or similar words," their impoverished vocabulary of gestures, and their totallly inadequate rubrics. The way to overcome individualism and false inculturation is radical obedience to fixed, inherited liturgical forms that gradually strip us of self-will and immerse us in the self-giving of Christ.

EVERY CATHOLIC NEEDS TO LISTEN TO THIS IN ITS ENTIRETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow this contradicts everything I was taught in “theology class.”
If your theology classes were like my religion classes from grammar school to high school, then you didn't encounter the Catholic Faith there, but something quite quite different.
Wow, Dr. Kwasniewski!! Thank you so much for your work of teaching! Thank you for your contribution to opening my eyes and heart (adversely affected by more than 50 years of NO Mass attendance) to the ineffable beauties of our Faith! With great joy I receive all this. With great resolve and openness to God's grace I hope to put it into practice!
Thanks be to God!
Even though I've technically "known" this for years, hearing the truth like this is just inspiring, hopeful and such a confirmation of truth. Thank you Dr. Kwasniewski.
Thank you for saying so! To God be the glory!
@@DrKwasniewskiYou are very welcome!
Great lecture. I have no problem with fasting from food before Mass bc I attend Low Mass at 0630, but mightily struggle with abstaining from COFFEE when I rise at 0400. I literally get nauseous without it.
Auto-Demolition, (Self-Destruction): so finally admitted Pope Paul VI himself.
I get it, there’s an aesthetic and communal benefit to TLM. Now, what is the canonical or legal argument for TLM that can survive papal mandates without making excommunication?
I highly encourage you to read the book “Does Traditionis Custodes Pass the Juridical Rationality Test?” (Os Justi Press: 2022) by Fr. Réginald-Marie Rivoire, a canon lawyer. It is very good and I think it will help you find an answer your question.
@@anthonyjones866 that’s specifically on Pope Francis’ letter, right? Is there “legal” discussion that is similarly applied to Vatican 2?
@@DavGre While the book was inspired by the motu proprio and deals with it at certain points, most of the book is dedicated to the legal argument for the TLM in the face of any and all potential canonical restrictions placed upon it. It does tackle the canonical significance of the post-Vatican 2 liturgical reforms, so to answer your second question: yes. It's a small book but it packs a punch; it helped clear up a lot for me!
Quo Primum by Pope St. Pius V did it for me. Long before Traditionis Custodes.
Awesome! So many key observations as usual
