When I visited Yellowstone to work one summer in 1981, Steamboat Geyser was a dry hole in the ground that hadn't erupted for years. I knew I missed something great, and here it is! Thanks
@@geri8666 the year I captured this video , it was erupting about every 5 to 7 days . I still consider myself very fortunate to have walked up to it, waited for just a few minutes, and then witnessed the full eruption from the very beginning.
Great video of an incredible experience! We were present for the September 9, 2020 major eruption; just like you, happened to be exploring the basin at the right time. There was a lot of wind that day, so all along the boardwalk and at the main viewing area, we were all being soaked and it was icy cold.
So were you like me when you saw all the cars in the parking lot. So many had tarps over them to prevent damage. Signs that cautioned parking in the area, and you thought “oh what are the chances that it goes off today?”
@@michaelpetersonbackpacking6077 Strangely enough, we missed all of the precautions and saw no tarps but as we left were told by a ranger that we should be careful not to turn on car wipers or wipe glasses as they would be irreversibly damaged. Funny when viewers pulled out raincoats and umbrellas; they were prepared but also had likely been waiting for hours, if not days. We still marvel at how lucky we were. It was a highlight of our trip, of which there were many incredible moments. By the way, do you know why the water is so cold? I have not been able to find any information about that.
Good job on the video. We caught this eruption from down at "steerage" the runoff channel. Each location has it's own treat. I think I have only caught 2 from this upper deck perspective.
I just looked on your channel...... you didn’t just catch this same geyser, you were there the same time we were and caught the same eruption? People have asked me how long it went off. Hey Mike im working on a years long project of fully documenting every geyser in the park. Can I use this for a segment about Steamboat? It's never erupted when iv'e been.
Some facts about this big boi for you guys. -The Steamboat geyser is taller than Old Faithful, and is (if I recall) the second-tallest geyser on earth. -As the volcanic hotspot moves away from Old Faithful, it is moving toward Steamboat and causing more frequent eruptions. -Steamboat may become the new Old Faithful as the famous geyser goes dormant. -Steamboat was inactive until a couple years ago, and people started panicking thinking that it was a sign Yellowstone was about to blow. -Steamboat erupts with such force that it can effortlessly send *boulders* flying into the air. I want to see this one erupt so badly one day but it's still so unpredictable :( Don't quote me on my accuracy, it's 10 PM
And now-, for some reason, it has slowed down significantly. With more than 20 days between eruptions. Might become more difficult to catch a show . Who knows ?
