  • Ugly Hound and his faithful sidekick Pat Lacey cutting a Sitka Spruce on Afognak Island. We have been here for 5 years and have not taken a single video, so I talked my cutting partner into making this Video for me. The tree and the Timber faller are nothing special, but the saw, the chain, and Ugly dog dang sure are!

Hi guys, I'm his partner and I was filming this. I hope you enjoyed it because we went through nine chainsaws, seventy two acres of forest and six dogs to finally get it right. Hopefully everyone knows a joke when they see it! Absolutely great cutting!!!

If I wasn't sure which way a tree leaned all I had to do was look to see which side he stood. He was always on the opposite side of the lean every time, and he was never wrong!

That was the fastest and cleanest pie cut ever. That's the most important part. You kept the bar right in it the whole time. Awesome. I always wear glasses though, only because even if I'm in bed and someone on the other side of the county is running a saw, I will get saw dust in my eye. I swear it's a curse. Anyhow great video. Your dog seems to know more about felling big wood than most of the people making comments on here.

What is more impressive is how the tree got there and thrived so long and became so big. Along with all of the wildlife it fed from or was fed too or homed. Then just a handful of minutes to take it all away.. then on to anything from homes to boats to furniture or even tooth picks. It is all good to admire. Life is so ugly yet so beautiful.

Nice job. I cut timber in Oregon for 8 years myself. I always used Full Comp chain. I tried Stihl chain, but preferred Oregon Full Comp. I always seemed to get a more consistent grind with the Oregon chain. I was lucky, I had an old cutter give me one of his grinding stones and I matched up my angles on my grinder to match. Holy shit did my saw cut! Saw did most of the work and walked itself through the wood like butter. Thanks Mel, wherever you are.
