Devy is an amazing guitarist. Hell, he toured with Steve Vai right after he got out of high school. Guitar magazine called him one of the four guitar gods of metal today. He's just not commercial.

Devin Townsend is a genius, simple as that!

Devin is a perfectionist, things have to be done in a way that suits him. He only works with the best musicians and it shows. I don't think there are any words adequate to describe Devin.

The venue is an actual Roman amphitheater in Plovdiv, so the ruins in the background are roughly 2000 years old. Amazing that he could pull a show like this together.

Devin live is way to go. He's really good guitarist but does not like solos much. Willy Wanka on EMG is good example of his guitar skills (few riffs and musical ideas from his songs put together). Other good Devins solo is in song Deep Peace (although more "arpeggioy" :D ).
Drummer in this video is RVP - Ryan van Poederooyen. He has cooperated with Devin for years through multiple of his projects.

if anyone's interested - there're videos on youtube of the 93 tour with Vai - you can see Devin (aged 20) playing harmony guitar parts with steve vai

Failure, along with much of the Transcendence album, is huge and mesmerizing. I believe there are a handful of tracks on the album that contain solos, though Devin doesn't care for them much so they are infrequent across the 25 or so albums that have born his name.
Think of Devin as a rather eclectic composer 1st, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what you'll find in his work. Only as recently as this year has he been making an active effort to learn music theory and orchestral composition, even though many of his albums are loaded with very intricate compositions that he was responsible for.
Devin has one song I'm aware of that has a guitar riff in it. That being Vampira. The music video is a laugh, though doesn't draw attention to the riffing. There are plenty of live performances of it to be found.
For more solo work, Deep Peace from the Terria album is very tastefully placed. The Mighty Masturbator is a rather lengthy and wacky track from the rather extreme Deconstruction album, which doesn't contain a solo that I recall but has a lot of interesting guitar melodies throughout. Willy Wanka is a mix of a bunch of guitar work from various songs, including The Mighty Masturbator.
If you're not limiting yourself just to interesting guitar-heavy tracks, I'd recommend checking out Hear Me, from the same album as Genesis, for a sense of just how hard he can go when he feels the need.

Love me some Devi. You nailed it, he really is great at all aspects of the music: singing, creation, playing. He's also a fantastic person. I've seen him numerous times live and EVERY time I've left his shows happier than going into one. Last I saw him was a live acoustic set, just Devi on a small stage and it might have been the best show I saw thanks to how he interacts and talks to the audience.
Not a Devi request, but a band that opened for him once, that has some really skilled musicians: Ne Obliviscaris, and their live version from Colorado, And Flower Plagues the Kaleidoscope.
They're an Australian Progressive Black metal band, so there are black metal vocals in addition to clean vocals. I'd say it's my favourite song from any band, it is a long one though

That's a band that's definitely been recommended to me before. I'll have to check em out!

Devin does not do crazy solos often, but when he does they're so fucking good.

Dev can shred with the best, but you don't hear it mush though.

Take one of those guitars behind you and tune it to CGCGCE and you're set for like 80% of Devin's back catalogue. It's all great fun to learn and crosses about a dozen different genres. Plus yes, while his solos are few and far between, when he unleashes them they're amazing. Check out "Deep Peace" from the same show for another awesome (but very different) solo.

Whoa. That's one hell of a weird tuning. 😵

@@MattFarkas It's Open C, so strum all the strings without fretting anything and you've got a C chord. It's great for rhythm sections, but takes aaaaaages to get used to for soloing when you're used to all the Standard tuning shapes and scales.

Here he talks about him discovering the open c tuning.

Please react to Higher from the same concert and Grace from Retinal Circus. These are the best recorded live songs I have ever heard.

Bartok wrote metal. Prokofiev wrote metal. Shostakovich, Stravinsky...metal before there was metal. The orchestra here seems perfectly natural.
