The real question is, "how do you know you are worth more?" and the answer is, you look into other companies and apply for open positions. If you manage to land an offer that offers a higher salary, then you have a wonderful dilemma in your hands. You can then go to your boss and ask for a raise, provided you still want to work where you are at. Regardless of his answer, the choice is in your hands. In my opinion, if you want a raise, you should put yourself in a position to get that raise no matter what.

doing the job that you want, not the job you get paid for is great for charity work. but its really toxic, if company expects it. expecting employees to work under market value (and if you are paying for lower level position, its under market value) is not ok, and endorsing this type of company behaviour is not ok

It's pretty common practice at many companies - and I think it's great. Instead of incompetent people being promoted into positions they are not ready for (i.e. cannot do), promotions are based on demonstrated capabilities. Compounding this, many individuals don't have the benefit of being promoted based off of their perceived potential.
That said, you don't have to agree with me or follow my advice if it feels out of alignment for you.

Excellent tips, Jennifer! When I still worked at my first corporate job, I remember feeling really shy. It's important to provide value for the company + be confident in your skills.

I think having an open and honest conversation is so necessary. But the thing is that trust first needs to be there. So I would first work on building that trusting relationship with my manager first.

Very nice production quality! I like how you mention the startup environment, as the size of an organization plays a part in how much they spend and defining what success looks like for that increase!

Hi Jennifer. Great video. Very Helpful, thank you! May I know if its acceptable to initially request my promotion and raise via email? and perhaps do a follow up one-on-one meet with Senior Manager. Reason I ask this is because I feel i can convey my justifications or reasons better in writing - I can list down my accomplishments and points you just mentioned in your video ....I don't risk of missing anything. She can read it and review it again if she wants to. I'm also thinking my manager (if she agree with me) will also escalate or defend it herself to management--and since she already have it in writing, Im guessing it will be advantageous for me. What do you think? Again Thank you!

I believe that you should not ask for a raise because that can get you a NO for an answer. The correct question is what do I need to do to get a 10 percent raise? That will get you a lot of information, for one the work needed to get a 10 percent raise, you will also get to know what the workload required is and if its fair or not, and thirdly you will know what the company thinks of you. They might raise you immediately because you asked or they might say sorry, you will never get a raise cause you are already overpaid...and then you know NOW is the time to leave

Thanks for the tips. Normally I put a gun on the table and ask for a raise. ;)

Usually this doesn't work. If they wanted to promote you they would. If they don't wish to for whatever reason, requesting it won't change anything either. Signalling you want a promotion may make them see u as too ambitious and a threat to them too. I just think it's too risky.

I was hired for a growth position. A few months into my role, I was offered an opportunity for a secondment at a company it is starting to build a relationship with, which went exceptionally well! Also, I got nominated to a board position for an industry NFP. The two biggest high impact projects for anyone of my title. My report for those projects was to upper management and the boss of this line. Unfortunately, it seems to have made middle management, whom I report to for my actual work, nervous with me and none seem interested in interacting with me. I feel I've stood out so much it's isolated me. I have upper management support, and two middle managers support (both not within my department) but no apparent middle management support within my department. Could this be fueled out of insecurity by middle management?
