  • Two more members of the Addams Mini-Family have been completed! I build Puglsey from a kit and re-purposed an older doll to create Grandmama. I am super excited to finish up the last 3 family members soon!!

    I have seen several comments with people suggesting Cousin Itt! No worries... he has already been made. He was a gift to me from another miniature friend and you can see him in one of the final photos of the all the family members so far (at the end of the video). I would never leave out Cousin Itt and he will even be getting his own room ;) I should have mentioned him in the video but forgot.

    Okay, when you started with the Pugsley wig, I about fell over laughing at those long upright tufts! But, DANG, woman: by the time you were finished, I was a believer. You always teach me something new, Ara - and I love it! Thank you for the tip about mohair + superglue, too. Super helpful. Can't WAIT to see the rest of the family! 😍💗😍

      Thank you Heather! haha the hair ALWAYS looks crazy along the way. I had to learn not to panic and believe it would get better! The mohair was surprisingly difficult to work with. I suggest viscose all the way when possible. Luckily her hair is supposed to be an out of control mess so it works ;)

    It is fascinating to watch these characters seemingly come to life. They complete the house almost magically! I am pro doll. I like using Tim Holtz vintage paper dolls in my backgrounds, but I always end up with dolls...with names and little stories about them and their other family members. It’s a fun escape from reality! 😂😂😂 I never grew up, I guess. Thank goodness😏
    I almost snort laughed seeing Pugsly in the electric chair! The scenes are priceless. Better than the movie even!

    I love dolls in the houses . Just by repositioning them or give them something to do like grandma in your picture you create a whole new scene. Love your Addams family , especially your attention to detail.

      So very true! It can give a greater story to the entire piece sometimes to have a doll in 'action' :)

    Love the dolls and how closely they resemble the family members. I think appropriate dolls add so much to miniature settings and give the human factor that otherwise would be missing. Your work is always well done and I have learned so much watching your videos!

    So fun to watch the process of bringing the final product to fruition. You understand where you’re going with it and I need to trust that you know what you’re doing! As you were dirtying Grandmama’s apron I thought, “ Uh oh... too much!!!” But as it dried it was perfect! Haha! Love it! Your intricate knowledge of the characters and their story is fun too. I grew up with the Addams family but I didn’t really follow it, so you are my educator on the topic and I find it fascinating. I smile at the idea that Grandmama always looked like she’d been rolling around in the ashes. What a visual!

    To me the question of dolls in miniature settings really comes down to the project, itself. Like a doll in one of the Thorne Rooms just wouldn't look right. I have a 1/12th Watson figurine (I cannot remember the name of the artist) that I use as "The Colonel" in my English cottage, with his souvenirs from all his adventures. I have a beautiful Miss Marple made by Marcia Blackstrom but she has never looked right in any of my settings. She resides in a glass dome on my bookshelf. But like in your case, your Addams dollhouse is like a 3-d painting and your dolls have that same artistic aesthetic, so they are working wonderfully together.

    • @BentleyHouseMinis
      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point of view Rob! I can't imagine a doll looking right in my Coffee Shop. There is so much realism and detail that a porcelain doll would look really out of place. And I love to think about the Addams house as a 3D painting! Shadows and dust come free of charge lol!

    Great video, with great results (as usual!). As for dolls, as a rule I don't care for them EXCEPT when they are specific characters with specific personalities, such as your. Usually there is no real difference between a housemaid, a duchess and a governess except their clothes. But you have captured the essence of each of these known quantities so well that they will be the stars on the backdrop of your house. Though the process has been reversed, it appears that you created the house to suit the dolls.
    Darn - I will stop gushing now and go back to admiring your work.
    PS I will also dream of finding inhabitants for my Grand Obsession that replicate my family in 1941!

    • @BentleyHouseMinis
      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much George! I appreciate your kind words so much💖💖 I can imagine it would be much more difficult to create interesting dolls if you did not have the characteristics as flushed out as well known characters. What a fantastic idea to have replicas of your family!! And a daunting task!

      @@BentleyHouseMinis - Daunting to say the least.......My family was just as weird as the Addams, but in the "opposite" direction, if that makes sense! On top of which, there were almost a score of them, so it would be like modeling an entire busload of disparate and unique (!!) personalities.............a few of which should probably not be recreated for the sake of world peace lol

    I start with the dolls, and then create the houses and buildings for them. Whenever I have a doll, I never want to display them alone. I want to give them a world where they live. To me, a dollhouse is not complete without someone living in it. ❤

    Whee! Another great Ara techniques lesson. Thank you! I like the idea of a doll or two in the average dollhouse. The Addams Family Mansion is not an average dollhouse. I have picked up about 6 possible dolls for my haunted dollhouse and none of them is a really good fit. I am totally overthinking this one. Will pick one and make it work already. Love your projects, Ara!

    They are great! I personally do not like dolls in my scenes. I do have one, Father Christmas in my Christmas room box. I made him an exception as he is more of a mythical creature. My daughter thinks miniature dolls are "creepy looking" (when they aren't meant to be) and a doll artist told me that's because the right doll wasn't used. Your dolls fit perfectly with the house and will give it so much personality. Can't wait to see the rest of the family!

    You had me going there with your "long strip of rectangular fabric" Ara, until the penny dropped and I realised you meant a long, rectangular strip of fabric lol! It doesn't take much to overload my confusion circuits !
    I was going to tell you that I found nail art flocking powder pretty good for doing extremely short haircuts. You get in in millions of colours and most of my Figma Archetype figures had it before your, and a couple of other, tutorials, overcame my 12th scale wigging fears! Pugsly is perfect! His face and hair are just the way he appears in my imagination. I can't wait for grandmama because I want to do a witch and Miss Periwinkle and Grandmama are going to be who I try to model the older witches face on. You have to have 3 you know, the maid, the mother and the crone in witchcraft literature. The crone is personified by Hecate but I don't want her as grim as That!

    Your dolls are amazing, very well done. When I watched the show growing up, my favorite was Cousin It. To answer your question, I have dolls in my doll houses. Many times I find a doll or two & build or renovate a house to suit the dolls. I have a collection of vintage dolls & American Girl dolls. The American Girl dolls have a large community in my basement. I get a little carried away with my hobby, but it's a very effective stress reducer. Looking forward to your next doll.

    I love the scenes where you feel like the "characters" just left or are just about to return. However, to satisfy the childhood Barbie player in me, I do have dolls that I pose when I'm trying to get a "scene" worked out in my head. And since you asked, I'd love to see the movie's Joan Cusack's character represented. Maybe a smooshed meatloaf or a forgotten gauzy shoulder wrap?

    When I painted the face for "mini-me" in my studio diorama room box, I matched the skin color to my favorite foundation. I was also unhappy with the brush strokes, so I went back over the face with watered-down acrylic paint in the same color and that smoothed things out nicely. *shrug* it worked (this time LOL)

      That is very true! I can't imagine a doll on my abandoned coffee shop but it works for the Addams Family. The next prompt video will probably be around the end of this month I am guessing ;)

  • @michellebrady3621

    I love having dolls in a project because it comes to life. But it depends on the project. I think dolls are great for a dollhouse. It gives you the ability to change the scene in any room. But they may not be good for a room boxes. I really like this segment on dolls because I am thinking about retiring my vinly dolls from the 70's mom & daughter are bald. Does vinly shrink? You are doing a great job with dolls. I can't wait for the next characters. I have one question are you going to make It and Thing? Best wishes as always.🤗👍❣

    • @BentleyHouseMinis
      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point Michelle! It can definitely depend on the project ;) Best of luck rehabbing your dolls... its a lot of fun! I have Cousin Itt that was given to my by a friend (you can see him in the family photo at the end of the video) and I already made Thing a LONG time ago... but I might remake him as well (like original Pugsley, he's a little rough lol)
