What an exciting rendition! They really find the drama. Even at its densest, texture-wise, you can hear the character of the parts. It’s like a fantastic play-four intense people, arguing, agreeing, listening, not listening, coming together in spots, off into their own reveries in others. Seeing it played live makes me love this piece even more! It’s really beautiful.

The ine piece in the modern catalog i fear i might tire listening to...but so far not the case. 35+ years and still moves me.

What a joy to see this monumental masterpiece of post WWII modernism performed live. To my mind it is still the only work that captures the entire tradition from Hadyn to Mozart, Beethoven to Brahms, Bartok, Schoenberg, Shostakovich and Webern and still has something fresh and vibrant to contribute. By the time the 3rd string quartet comes along the tradition is unrecognizable.

I love this quartet. It's downright accessible if you have the right attitude. Any ensemble that has the courage to play Carter is OK by me.

This piece is more effective when seen, especially with a first class group like this - easier to grasp the dense textures and enjoy the virtuosity and flair of the writing.

For me one of a handful of goat string quartets from the inception of the medium i believe starting with Hadyn. Though all 5 of Carters string quartets are masterpieces i pick this one as it appears ex nihilo - out of thin air - nothing prior to it to give us a hint what a modern string quartet might sound like.

A masterful performance of an immensely complex piece, bravo. Also the first live performance of the piece on TH-cam, which deserves kudos. I’ve literally been waiting years for this.

Finally, Carter is no longer "modern music!" (Sing "mod-ern-mu-sic" to B-A-C-H.)

The dirty little secret is that no one really can, unless they're in the live audience and are held captive out of a sense of decorum from leaving.

@@nickcurran3105 there is only one secret and here it is: speak for yourself. I've listened this quartet from start to finish many times.

@cantatanoir6850 Agreed with this: everyone is so wildly different. People like us enjoy these works of art, and if others don't that's okay.

@@byattwurns1553 Thank you. I've listened to this quartet in its entirety many times. (Hell, I've watched this video several times in the past year.) To each their own.

Sounds like your problem. That you would expect perhaps some empathy or validation of your comment is just plain ignorance. Along with his 50 or so masterpieces, nothing compares with this goat.

Then stop using Q-Tips, Charlotte. They push the earwax further into the ear canal which blocks the ear.
