  • Minnesota was the first state to offer troops to the Union during the Civil War. And it was home to the last Civil War veteran when 106-year-old Albert Woolson died on August 2, 1956. For a state so far from Gettysburg, Antietam and Bull Run, Minnesota’s history in the Civil War is full of surprises.

PBS and Haley, you did a seriously fantastic job creating this video! I think more people would enjoy learning about history if it was taught this way! Well done and HUZZAH!

After Bull Run when the Confederates first dealt with the Western troops the word was sent east to end this quickly, they know how to fight and will not give you any time to rest.

I would think that along with the Dred Scott case you had bleeding KS, which was 54-59 I think. That said, with Union Drummers and the Confederates going as young as 13 to fill their ranks, it doesn't surprise me how old these people got to be. The flag, I could care less.
